Just brought stinger to dealer for first oil change

Has anyone on here done their own oil change yet? Anything tricky about it that you wouldn't trust to a Jiffy Lube? I've done two so far, both at the dealer.

I've done all my oil changes so far myself, even the first one at 3k.

Coming up on the 4th one. The one thing that I would say, pay close attention to, would be reinstalling the oil filter cartridge back, as the holder is made of plastic and the base it screws into is plastic as well.
Over tightening can result on a broken base and oil will leak. Also screwing it in wrong will result on cross threading resulting in a oil leak.

Also if you are not careful when removing the oil filter cartridge oil will get splashed on the splash shield. The splash shield is not made of plastic but rather a hard foamy material that will absorb oil and become very dirty over time and will start sagging.

At this point in the game, I wouldn't do it myself, but I'd like to know if I need to stick to the dealer.
get a set of ramps drive up (carefully). 6 -10 mm bolts and a few button retainers drops the under faring exposing the underside motor /transmission. From here it's basic oil change stuff anyone can do. filter ,drain plug, the new filter gets a film of oil on the gasket, screw the plug back in oil pan, refill . start engine idle for a bit then add if needed. if done correctly it should get a half a quart more ( the filter grabs a bit from the true capacity)
for 2.0's btw...v 6's have a cartridge set up.

Just did my first oil change at around 8700..... Shocked at $98 dollar oil change at the KIA dealer nearest me ...

... my local kia dealership here in knoxville charges me $70.

I know, older thread. But my post is relevant ...

Paid $135 + tax for my first oil change/tire rotation/multi point inspection.

$80 Labor
$55 Parts (3.3L Kit) includes:

  • Chevron Techron
  • Valvoline 5W30 Synthetic Max Life
  • Gallon Washer Fluid
  • Service Kit-Oil Filter
There are 2 dealers in my area, went to this one because it was recommended by someone familiar with both establishments who said the quality of service was markedly better there.

LOL.

As I said though, I was told to stay away from the other dealer so no choice really.

As long as they don’t Overfill your engine by over a quart of oil (Kia of Fredericksburg) or Damage your side skirt near the pinch weld jack point then say they don’t have clear enough footage if it was already damaged before or if it happened during the service (they take 360 Ipad videos of cars before servicing and it clearly showed an intact side skirt before the oil change) (Waldorf Kia)...then you should be good.
I swear they hire the biggest idiots to work in these service departments.

Might just be me, but $140ish all in for tire rotation, oil change, and a full check from a dealer doesn't seem too bad.

Sure, you can get an oil change for $20, but you're not going to be able to blame your dealer for a random Jiffy Lube screwing up your oil change.

I never advocated jiffy lube.
$89. From Kia service center for full synthetic and checks. Rotations are free at any tire shop (discount tire for example).

I called another KIA dealer from outside my immediate area, they said $55 for an oil change and $20 for tire rotation.

$135 is reasonable for the services described.

Automobile Magazine stated the following in their review of the Stinger:
"The visit entailed an oil change, tire balance and rotation, and inspection for a hefty bill of $220.99. The six-quart oil change accounted for $116.44—which we’re thinking is quite the chunk of change for your average Kia driver."

You fared much better than the magazine did, lol. The parts charge of $55 is a bargain. Discounted materials for the DIYer would probably run $35 for 7Qts synthetic oil, $10 filter, $5 Techron, $2 bottle of wiper fluid for a total of at least $50. Labor for any diligently done oil change (to include resetting the service reminder where applicable) alone is at least 15 min. Labor for a tire rotation (to include pressure check and proper torquing of lug nuts) and underbody components inspection (brakes, exhaust, etc.), is another 15 minutes. And, no one (i.e. Discount Tire, etc.) is going to rotate your tires for free either - maybe "at no additional charge" if you had purchased the tires from them. If you live near many major metro areas of the US, your local Kia dealer is probably billing at around a $120/hr labor rate. So the $80 labor charge is likely the equivalent of around 40 minutes which does not seem unreasonable. Some of these other lower quoted prices did not include full synthetic oil, or the techron additive (a 12 oz bottle retails for $9 or $10). So if the dealer in fact did everything they described, the cost is not out of line. Some (often dishonest) dealers and other service places view oil changes as a loss leader and offer them for less than cost so that they can forcefully push a variety of other profitable and often unnecessary services.

I reviewed other updates from Automobile magazine's long term Stinger test and found this:

"This was their (Kia of Carson) first time dealing with a problem like this on a Stinger and they wanted to talk to the factory reps first ... The rotors were resurfaced and the pads sanded ... Oh, and the bill for the oil change? $55.23, much more in line with our expectations than the $220.99 that Car Pros Kia stuck us for last time. Lesson learned: Shop around for service."

Took mine in Monday for first oil & filter. Routine. Waited while they did it. $0.00 (Lifetime free oil & filter changes) Synthetic. Pleasant transaction @ Bert Ogden Mission Kia, Mission, Texas.

Any SoCal, Orange County stinger owner have Kia service center recommendations? Last oil change was $120, at Garden Grove Kia. Have had called around a few places.... all around the same price.

Anyone noticing the wide disparity in reported fees for oil changes?

In all the years I owned Mustangs, the price was the same virtually everywhere I went.
