Hi Guys
Just had a few queries on this subject so i thought i would explain our design principle so you guys have an idea why we ended up with this type of CAI.
A few people are asking why our air boxes are open at the back and we have the JT logo cut out. We put a good 6 months development into these CAI kits and there is a very good reason why they have been designed and manufactured this way.
Ok so what we need to remember here is without modifying the OEM cold air feeds they rely on the airbox being sealed to pull air from the front of the vehicle. The factory ducts sit up underneath the plastic facia panel in front of radiator with about 1/4" of space to pull the air in. I believe the reason Kia designed it this way was to quieten the intake noise. So in short if the intake system you are using isnt completely sealed it will pull hot air from the engine bay.
Ram air is not an option due to postion of OEM ducts. Remember air is lazy and will follow the path of least resistance. Hence the only way to utilize the factory duct arrangement is to have a sealed system like oem.
The reason we have an open back and logo cut out is to promote constant airflow from our forward facing ducts directly over the filters. If it was sealed a pressure wave is created not allowing ingress of cool air from the front of the vehicle. Simple physics.
A good example is if you travelled at say 40mph and held a cup out the window into the wind. A pressure wave is built up and there is zero airflow into the cup. Take the bottom of the cup out and airflow takes place through the cup. Hope you guys follow. The very same principle was used by Lockheed Martin with the SR71 Blackbird for airflow into the J58 engine.
We tried a sealed box and intake temps suffered. Hence our design of the open back with JT logo cut out. Its simply to promote vast airflow over the filters.
Also a point to note is all our testing is done on a chassis dyno with the BONNET SHUT. Power figures quoted with bonnets open are unrealistic unless you guys can drive around with bonnets open all the way. The filters will be pulling bulk cold air. Would be an awesome idea however it just doesnt work in the real world.
Hope this clears up a few questions about our design anyway.
Have started on a video about our intake kit. Will see if i can post it up.
