Jerky Cruise Control?

For me the surging is in a single gear and caused by the cruise changing throttle, not by the transmission shifting.

I'll be checking mine out this weekend, travel on I95 to West Palm Beach. Will check it out in smart cruise and regular cruise. I think I may have experienced some fluctuation in smart cruise in the month that I have had the car.

Jeez, between this and the small gas tank, I'm even happier I haven't taken the plunge.

I know I'm in the minority, but I use cruise CONSTANTLY ... I get up to speed, then hit the cruise button, no matter if I'm going a mile or 300 miles. I basically drive on cruise. It lets me concentrate on everything else about driving without having to worry about my speed. And getting speeding tickets is eliminated (unless I somehow were to misread a speed limit sign or something). No tickets in over 25 years.

So the cruise control has to work right for me, and as mentioned above, I actually traded a car because of this problem.

I actually use cruise control (probably) more than the average person as well. I could be going 2 miles down the road in a 40 mph area and still use cruise for most of the drive.

I guess that's why it's seems so much more problematic to me.

I use it a lot also, but as I said, mine isn't bad. I wouldn't have probably even noticed it unless I read about it here.

It could be an "OC" thing. Some people are just hypersensitive to smoothness and its opposite. I wouldn't be bothered by a little fluctuation in Cruise Control because I've had some rather "jerky" ones that were still fully functional in the past. But the Stinger is supposed to be smoooth. So any variance is going to be instantly detected. If my CC started to act even the least bit less smoooth (which it is so far, I'm totally satisfied with it; I only have standard, not smart) I'd be very unhappy with the change. But I'd probably not try and get it "fixed" unless it got to be really noticeable.

A comparison: I got a new Giant mountain bike last year. The first thing I noticed was a lumplumplumplumplump feeling coming from the rear tire. It was not seated properly. They "fixed" it. And it was only less, not gone. Still too lumpy. They fixed it again, and yet again. Then the tube failed and the problem was back again only bigger. They carefully seated the tire and on my test ride I was by then so sensitive to the slightest imperfection that I decided I couldn't tell if it were "lumping" or not and I'd just ride on it until I either couldn't stand it anymore or it "went away". Sometimes I still imagine that the "Lumping" is there. But most of the time I don't notice anything or think about it at all. It is possible for us to create a problem through expectation that isn't really there!

No problems this past weekend with the cruise. Both smart and conventional cruise worked well, no jerky action. This was a 200+ mile trip on I95.

I don't have a problem with mine. I would say the radar guided cruise is a little too quick to intervene.

It's not like it's a big thing, you've gotta be really sensitive to even notice it on a flat straight road. Had my wife and cousin in the car, mentioned the cruise control being annoying, and neither of them could feel it even when I pointed it out. It's suuuuuper small, and I only ever feel it in my lower back up against the lumbar support.

You're lucky. Passengers feel it in my car. I try to ignore it but that's hard to do when my wife is on side of me complaining about it.

I don't think either of them are great litmus tests, to be fair. My wife drives a Minivan with the throttle response of a dead horse, and my cousin drives 30 year old beater trucks. Just saying it's not super obvious. A passenger could easily put makeup on without the cruise control surges giving them issues... And then leave that makeup in your car, where it melts to the arm rest, and it takes forever to clean up. *grumbles*

It personally drives me a little crazy (in the same way the notches in the headlights drive me crazy), but only if I think about it. Otherwise, it disappears into the background.

Have you tried adjusting the SCC reaction in the settings?

Or the following distance setting, or the combination thereof.

I noticed this early on, but haven't experienced it in a while. I'm watching for it, though and will keep this thread advised.

Hey folks ... So I just had my Stinger in for this issue of the cruise control. They had it for 2 days. Verified my concern. The technician and service manager both stated that this is NOT normal. They got with Kia Tech Line and opened a case for this. CASE # 12805036. They checked for mis-fires, pulled the spark plugs. They test drove 2 other vehicles and had this issue as well. I have been advised that the tech line stated "this is a normal characteristic for this vehicle and nor further action will take place for a repair." ... I am completely dumbfounded. I have NEVER had a car surge / pulse while having the cruise control engaged. Perhaps if more people will utilize the service department and reference the CASE # 12805036 for their issue; Kia will take notice and admit they have a problem. I have the GT without the distance monitoring and other $2k options. I have contacted Kia consumer affairs 2 weeks ago and am getting the run around; they keep giving me different case workers. For now, I am going to persue the BBB and file a claim.

Ouch. How many miles do you have on the car? As I (think) I said, I've not experienced it in a while. I've just crossed 9,000 miles on the odo. Perhaps it gets better as the car "learns"??? I really don't know.

I've got about 10,500. I've put around 3,000 highway miles on it in the last 3 weeks and it definitely hasn't learned. I hate driving the car on the highway.

I had my suspicions that Kia would say it's normal and not fix it which is why I haven't bothered to take it in.

Hm, well, are you both RWD and I'm AWD? 2 extra PSI? I'm on the 18" all-seasons. I'm just fishing for ideas here... Oh, and I installed K&N panel filters.

I'm RWD, panel filters, tune, and exhaust, but I've noticed this problem since I drove the car home from the dealership.

Use the Concierge number is my best advice at this point.
