JB4 Install Problems

Ever since I put the re-gapped stock spark plugs in instead of the densos, it wouldn't be a stretch to say that the car is running better than it ever has. I'm even getting better fuel economy now.:)

I'm inclined to agree that it was a plug issue. The only times I removed the coils was when I was swapping the plugs. As for the codes I'm not getting them now and I'm not too sure I want to put the densos back in since they were causing the car to misfire. I think when I get another chance, I'll try plugging the JB4 in with the OBDII and see if throws a code this time. There are no concerns around using it with the re-gapped stock plugs, right?

I've used mine with re-gapped stock plugs for over 10k miles without issue.

How do the plugs look that you removed?

I don't think they're too bad. There's some carbon on them but the electrodes are clear for the most part. I do seem to have to two different styles of denso plug, if that makes any difference 15504622057163979783527002284399.webp 15504622298955021969334158522772.webp

Plugged the JB4 in today and got a much different result where the car started and then promptly stalled out. I bought a code reader last night to check any codes if they got thrown and I got two today from the JB4: P0107: Manifold Absolute Pressure/BARO Sensor Low Input and P0234 Turbo/Super Charger Overboost Condition

Sounds like JB4 has no firmware or that something is faulty.

Going to pull the trigger on a set of Densos and JB4. Should I re-consider Densos for HKS M40?

Did you ever get this sorted out? I'm considering picking up a JB4, but posts like this make me rethink it.

lol you think there might be some unsolved customer issue from months ago? :)

Haha, it's more a question of "what happened so I can avoid having the same issue." I've seen everything from incorrectly gapped plugs, to the wrong plugs installed, to broken plug wires when removing them, to incorrectly installed fuel wires and more. I'm basically making a list of all the things to double check before firing up the engine after the install. The last thing I want is for my wife to think I destroyed my engine for "a little more power" haha. I'd just rather skip the "this is a normal part of the debug process" conversation.

So do you know what the issue was?

And while I've got your attention, is there a concern about running Denso plugs gapped to .022 without the JB4 installed? I'd like to install the plugs first, drive the car for a bit to make sure there were no issues there, then install the JB4. I figured that would help troubleshoot any issues I may run into.

Like I said we ship 100 Kia tuners a month. When people need tech support we help them here, on the n54tech support thread, or normally via support email. I don't remember what his specific issue was or what the resolution was off hand. Rarely do two people have the same support issue though so seems to be a waste of time proactively looking for solutions to an issue you don't yet have. If anything ever comes up contact us and we will help you resolve it. :)

No issue installing plugs ahead of time. That is what most people do.

I drove with the Densos gapped to .022 for about a month prior to installing the JB4 this weekend. No issues whatsoever.

Ha, maybe it's just the engineer in me. It's part of my job to figure out anything that could possibly go wrong before I finalize a PCB schematic/layout and order $20k+ worth of hardware so the idea of just connecting everything without knowing what to double check/verify is unsettling.

Thanks for that. I already feel better about it knowing I can at least rule out spark plug/coil issues before putting the JB4 on. And from other issues I've seen posted, I also now know to make sure that I can successfully communicate with the JB4 before I start the engine. I think this is enough to give it a shot with decent confidence. Thanks!

No worries like anything engineering the diagnosis is based on specific diagnostic steps to narrow down possible causes. We've been at it awhile so if anything ever comes up we can help you hone in on the issue pretty quickly.

Terry seems to be about as helpful as Lew from Diablo tuning. Guys like this don’t come along very often and I’m inspired to order from him after reading on here for the last few weeks. The only thing I’m waiting on is my car going in for the first dealer service in aproximy a month. Can we purchase the plugs pre-gapped from you Terry, I’m OCD and trying to gauge 0.022 will likely drive me insane lol

We don't pregap the plugs but with our gap tool it's really easy to do! And you can play with them all day long at the desk before installing. :)

I’m having the same code pop up, P0107 and the car hesitates when driving. Can you help me next lol

I installed my new JB4 today and found that it makes the car idle very rough causing the whole thing to shake. After it starts shaking it throws a CEL and there's lots of fuel rich white smoke. Any thoughts? This only happens while the JB4 is connected, once it is disconnected the problems

Was driving today fine with jb4 on map1 and stock spark plugs. After restart car started shaking and stalled, cel light came on. After disconnecting jb4 car run as normal but light was still on. After couple hours the light went off but I decided to check the code and stopped at auto zone, the code was p0107.

Had jb4 for a month and never had any issues, tried to connect to read the code while car was stalling, but could connect to it.

could it be loose connection somewhere? Or bad spark plugs?

Update, tried to connect JB4 without fuel wires - no luck still shakes and rough idle. Checked all connections everything looks good. JB4 can’t connect to the phone.
