Interesting Discoveries Thread (Good or Bad)

(first set developed terrible center wear at factory PSI)
Interesting. My LF tire outer edge wore to the point of starting to shed bits; meanwhile the center showed 5mm!? Disappointing, to say the least. I'm going back to running my tires a bit over inflated. Currently, cold is as close to 40 psi as I can get it.

The LED lights that turn on when you open your vanity mirror will not turn on if the visor is pushed further forward or back compared to where it would need to be to see yourself in the mirror. I thought it was interesting how they have more than one trigger for turning on/off.

I nearly always drive in Sport mode in manual gate. So I've gotten thoroughly accustomed to the "bump" between shifts, especially down low. Well, today I put it in Custom, where I have everything in Sport except engine/transmission, which is in Eco. As I do my own shifting (still using manual gate) I notice, finally, that the engine mapping in Eco is much smoother between gears! New to me, therefore a discovery - even after eighteen months and 28K miles! :laugh:

I always use Custom mode with everything in sport except suspension which I leave in comfort. I haven't used the Smart mode as yet. Was wondering if anyone can share their experience with this and is it worth using.

I’ve only driven a few times at night in this car and really don’t like the low beam coverage, seems way to low.

doesn’t seem to project far enough ahead, high beams are fine.

When I first got the car I decided to do a tank of fuel on each mode just to check the difference. Really wasn’t much in the end unless you gave it a boot full in sport mode. I’ve got my custom set up the same as yours. Most days I just drove round in comfort as it defaults to that. Haven’t used smart for a long time but from memory it wasn’t too bad. Basically it runs it in eco until it senses you’re being a little bit heavier with the right foot then it switches to comfort. I’m not sure it can go into sport, it never did for me anyway. You’ll get slightly better fuel economy in smart or eco modes but not so noticeable that it’s worth driving in them all the time. I usually get about 600 + km to a tank and it sits in mid to high 8’s per 100L in comfort. I drive a combination of freeway and local roads usually.

Thanks for that. I think our setup on Custom mode is the best compromise. I'm not too worried about fuel consumption. I drive a Jeep Cherokee that guzzles like a drunken sailor. The Stinger is like a micro car in comparison. I'm not a fan of Eco. I like having the full power available at all times. So I probably won't bother with Smart mode then. As you said it defaults to comfort after you turn it off and you really notice it with the power. So I always change it back to Custom. My fuel consumption is usually a little higher in the 9's.

smart mode respond to your gas pedal position.
normal highway crusing -> eco
normal driving -> comfort
kickdown -> sport

dumb thing about the smart mode is, once you activate cruise control it's stuck in comfort as long as cruise control is activated o_O
I would die for the custom mode but that doesn't exist in Eu Stingers :thumbdown:

Mine has gone into eco (in smart) with cruise control.

Well that sucks that you have no Custom mode. It would be Sport mode all the way if it was me then. Its nice to have the suspension in Comfort mode though as it can be a little harsher in sport.

I know the reasons for it but why would they install Eco mode in a Stinger....it's not natural.

That's why I drive in comfort and sport only

I use Smart in the winter when the roads are dicey. That way the Smart mode learns my driving habits as I gingerly pick my way through the snow and slush, etc. I don't know if "learning" means anything in the real world, but the idea that the car is helping me be careful delights my imagination and improves morale! :laugh:

You have to floor it for Smart to turn Red (Sport) mode. So yeah, pretty much Smart is only either Eco or Comfort.

That makes sense Merlin. I don't have to worry about snow or slush here, just rain. So I will probably keep it in Custom or Sport mode. Thanks.

Have you tried the Auto headlights with dimming. That way if no one is coming at you the high beams light. Some one is coming at you it dims.

Yes, I do like that feature but low beam is too low for me, last night was raining hard and oncoming traffic was enough to keep high off, add the heavy rain we had and no street lights made for a fun ride :)

Raise your headlights. They are aimed too low from the factory. You can do it with a long screwdriver. Takes a lot of rotations because the adjustments are very fine and you feel like you aren't doing anything, but it works. Clockwise (when looking down) raises the headlights.

I'll take a look thanks

This is my preferred highway cruising setup, although I have the GT2 so no manual gate for me.

Never happened. Doesn’t matter how hard you accelerate it never changes to anything except comfort. It’s irrelevant really as I don’t use smart mode, I don’t see the point. Also the car doesn’t really learn anything or help you with anything, it simply decides to use eco or comfort drive modes (or in your model sport) based on how hard you’re depressing the accelerator. At best all it’s doing is better managing your fuel economy by dropping back into eco when you’re not pushing it hard. Honestly the fuel savings are minimal when spread over a full tank of petrol. Try driving it in one mode only for a full tank then next time you fill try a different mode and go again for comparison. In no way at all is smart mode helping you be any safer or more careful in bad driving conditions.
