Interesting Discoveries Thread (Good or Bad)

Has anyone ever rolled their finger over the headlights switch while flipping to high-beam and accidentally shut the lights off???

This happened to me twice. I often drive with my hands at the 'normal' 3-and-9; thumbs 'hooked' over the intersection of the inside of the wheel and cross-section. While flicking my left middle-finger out to push the high/low stalk outward, finger rolled over the switch cylinder, switching them all the way to off. The first time it happened, no big deal. Took a second or two to recover / switch 'em on, but it was on a well lit divided highway in very light traffic. Second time, a little hairier: morning commute in the pre-dawn dark; narrow tree-lined 2-lane where I just happened to be on a short s-curve. Oncoming car passed by, I flicked outward then, Yikes! Pitch dark at about 50mph! Pushed and held the stalk outward to force lights/high-beams on, recovered, switched 'em back on. Yes, kind of embarrassing to admit but wondering if anyone else has had it happen. I learned quickly to now push outward with my finger(s) well down the stalk.

Oh... just to add: I don't like or normally use the adaptive/auto hi/low beam feature. One of my few dislikes of the tech in this car.

I tried it on mine the other evening and worked flawlessly, but it does do a lot of switching from brights to low beam on a somewhat busy road. I would probably only use it on some long country two lane roads.

I think that's the idea..

My biggest problem with the auto bright headlights is that I usually end up turning the brights on when I'm just trying to turn the system off. I wish it had a separate on/off switch.

Yes. Last April, in Spanish Fork canyon. Scared my son half to death. Didn't do my system any good either. Never again, so far.

I don't use the feature.....low beams all he time....unless I'm hiding bodies in the desert......

At least on the Stinger you have to touch the switch. Our 2017 Sorento randomly turns the lights on and off... Not fun when driving in the middle of the night!

huh, we have a 2018 sorento......it's just like the stinger....off, auto, parking and headlights on.....

Are you serious?! You don't have to touch anything and your lights disappear? If so, that is something busted. We had a Peugeot back in '84 that had the opposite problem: the high beams would come on when you turned on the lights; no option for normal lights. The only recourse was to flash the lights off and back on, to acknowledge that yes I know that I am blinding you; I'm not driving around like a witless fool. There were a bunch of other electrical fubars going on that I no longer remember clearly enough to recount.

Speaking of lights...I will always be a fan of illuminated dash lights..espesciallly when it gets dimwits busted for driving while impaired...classic! dash lights on so my lights are on......uh no; they really aren't,lol

It's apparently a common Sorento problem, but not common enough that the dealer has heard of it or Kia has issued a TSB. I think it's the switch itself, but it's one of those fun intermittent issues that never happens at the shop.

We have had 3 Sorentos and never had a problem with any of them except the 2012 SX, sometimes on it, the sound wouldn't come back on for the radio after using the nav, a simple turn off of the vehicle or a hit of the reset button would bring it back. Never have had a headlight problem though.

Does anyone else have the quirk where your station selector on the steering wheel changes selection direction depending on the screen you're on? On mine, if you hit up and you're on the media screen, it'll go from 2 to 1. If you're on any other screen and hit up, it'll go from 2 to 3. Makes no sense why it would do that.

It matches the direction of the icons on the radio screen...though I agree, odd design choice.

I have my station order memorized so when I change stations I don't even look at the screen. The changing order really messes with me.

Sure I'm not the first to notice but hadn't seen it posted - The GT and AWD badges are nothing like each other - design, font, material..

They're coming off now anyway, but just thought I'd share..

I find that's the worst time to use high beam....

The two keys interact strangely: my wife had the second one in her purse. I got out and tried to lock the doors, with the car idling and her inside (while I went in the grocery store really quick). Nothing doing. When I walked away, she locked the doors from inside. When I came back and tried to physically unlock the door using the little black button on the handle, it wouldn't unlock. Only my wife, inside, could do that. So, despite the car being ON, and my possessing the key that had started it, I could not unlock my own car with the second key inside the car!? WTH!?

When the car is on, the push button on the handle is disabled. Use the buttons on the remote.

The trunk is aluminium ? It sure as heck ain't magnetic! What about the hood??
