Interesting Discoveries Thread (Good or Bad)

I read-on the forum for a different model Kia-that the auto-dimming inside rear view mirror will revert to "bright" whenever the transmission is shifted to Reverse.
When i reverse out of my garage, the auto dimming dims the glass and then when im out the garage the brightness of the day makes the glass go back to normal. (If that makes sense)

That sounds like auto-dimming (and brightening) working as advertised and makes perfect sense.
Tomorrow I get delivery of a new auto-dimming mirror (with Homelink and compass) and expect I will soon learn more about the wiring inputs to that system!

sometimes i forgot to shift the gear to "P" Park before turning off the engine, i found out that the car will shift the gear to "P" the second the door opens and also apply the side Brake.

The gas fill door froze shut. I got out and was like, “so, what do I do now?” Luckily on the 20th try it popped open. There was some ice in there.

I’m also still irritated that CarPlay is by cable only. I’m constantly forgetting my phone in the car

My fuel door was frozen shut and tried opening several times via the button. The third time I tried opening it...I banged on the fuel door. Still nothing. I had to take out my credit card and just slightly wedge it under the fuel door and go all the way around the door to free it. No other car that I’ve ever owned has been frozen shut like this. The ice was around and under the door.

You might try putting a light coating of silicone on the inside of the lid. That would eliminate most of the water/ice clinging to the surface and make what does stick very easy to remove.

Are you referring to a silicone lubricant?

There are both dry and "wet" silicone lubes that will do it. Or you could just include the inside rim of the cover in your waxing procedure - anything to reduce bonding of ice on the surface.

There's a release latch for the gas tank inside the trunk, too. So maybe that would make it easier if you run into that problem again.

The dynamic bending lights are way more active and pronounced than in other Kia models I've driven with them (optima and sorento). They really turn when going around corners. There is a weird notch in the middle of the light pattern though.

I agree the light bending is great but what is up with that notch? It is very noticeable when you are driving through a heavy fog. Very pronounced and distracting.

I guess I'll carry around a few chemical hand warmers to thaw up the fuel door :)

Found out an interesting point today. I usually run around in Smart mode for my drive type. I noticed that in Smart mode the color of the word Smart changes to what mode the car is in. Pretty standard but what I did not know what that when you engage Adaptive cruise while in Smart mode the car forces a change to Smart Comfort mode. Let me explain..

Example: Driving along Smart (Eco Mode) and you hit your cruise you end up changing to Smart (Comfort mode) and it stays that way.

To test it I turned off Smart mode and set it to Eco. Then hit the cruise and it stayed in Eco with the cruise on. So it is not a requirement of the adaptive cruise but rather a feature I guess of the Smart mode.

Found this interesting as while just going to work and back I prefer to TRY and get some better gas mileage but will now have to run it in straight Eco mode to also use the Adaptive Cruise. Not sure I enjoy this feature too much but guess I can live with it.

I actually got better gas mileage while in Comfort than on Eco for highway with cruise on. This would be me driving about 20 miles highway at 70 mph. I would have thought Eco would have done better on the highway, but seems to me like its just for use around the city. With Comfort and cruise, I'm able to achieve about 28/mpg and with Eco it was only coming in at 26/mpg. Again, both of these around about 70 mph and I'm sure when they do the MPG for the car...its based on 55 mph to get 29/mpg highway.

I'll try some more runs over the next couple of weeks and try to record if driving situations are different.

I would imagine eco is most effective when the engine can hold a low RPM for a long duration. Any time the engine needs to be put under load for acceleration due to hills, stop and go traffic it loses a lot of that efficiency.

That is right, except some of the rules change for turbos which may need a bit more RPM to supply oxygen under load (hills). Try both modes and see what works best.

But shouldn't Eco get better mileage on the highway on cruise control because it sits at a lower rev?

I would expect lower RPM to give better mpg. But I do know that turbos don't like to be lugged, and the intake on a turbo is dependent on the cooled boost pressure from the turbo(s). If your RPM was "too" low to provide adequate intake boost, then it could be (possibility) that a lower gear would give better results. The only reason I'm even speculating on that is because of one user's report that eco was not as economical as comfort, if I remember correctly. That suggestion is only an attempt to explain what might otherwise not make sense.

Of course there are other possible factors - traffic, wind direction, even different fuel octane. That definitely needs verification if it is true. We definitely need more data because, as @Clearly Canadian and @StingerGT68 both said, it doesn't really make sense.

I mean, they called the drive mode ECO. So, hello, it should be the most economical drive mode under most conditions.
