So are there any CARB approved intakes in California?

Nnnnnnnnope. I saw that Stillen and Injen were working on it. Don’t think they got anywhere though

Nope, CARB won't approve any intake for 2017+ models. We have applications pending for a lot of stuff. Newer filters are required to have some sort of weird carbon capture system for when the engine is stopped despite our platforms being direct injection and they have not approved any aftermarket filter for that purpose.

Thanks for the info Terry, it's a real challenge to live in this state sometimes!

Thank you for the info. So does that mean it will just take longer for anything to get approved, or Nothing will get approved unless they further tweek the rules?

So far, the way CARB is acting like little children I would imagine nothing will get passed.

From a fellow Californian, why do you ask? Afraid of a ticket or afraid it will effect your smog check?

Because I prefer to stay legal. I'm the lucky guy who would probably get caught. Same reason I'm not gonna do downpipes.

Down pipes are one thing, intake is another. 99% of cops have no idea what the legalities of intake are, the other 1% are car guys who won’t care. The only reason I won’t do downpipes is it will effect smog. Even if you remove them and reinstall the stock downpipes for smog they can still tell because smog is now completely computerized and logs your car’s history. I don’t think intake will effect smog, but I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong.

The other thing to note about intake is that at normal driving speeds you can’t hear the intake with a few of the offerings out there. If you’re driving wild enough to hear the intake, your probably going to get pulled over anyway.

I'm really not worried about smog checks so much because I probably won't still have the car when it comes due for one. Just a preference to stay on the right side of the law I guess. I'm kinda old school that way.

It's a big production. The larger intake companies (K&N, S&B, etc) are negotiating with CARB to come up with standards that they will approve for aftermarket intakes on the newer vehicles. Honestly it's above my pay grade so we're just waiting around until we get word something has been approved.

fellow CA here. The reason I got rid of my MS3 was because I was tired of the smog issues i had to go through every other year. Some places didn't want to smog me just because i had a CAI (which was a Mazdaspeed CARB legal CAI offered as an option by Mazda itself). Living in CA is a huge (automobile) headache. And a lot of cops are wiser now to the tuners than past years.

I'm with you 100%. I bought the stinger so i could be legal (and fast) out of the box. I told myself i wasn't gonna modify anything outside of asthetics...so far so good lol

@whos_GT totally agree with you. So difficult to be a car nut in California and not have to take parts on and off just to pass smog. And trying to avoid cops who might decide to pull you over and cite you for “illegal” modifications. California used to be a haven for car nuts. Then the liberal nuts were kept in power and it all went downhill.
So far, after doing my sway bars, and brakes, the only thing I’m looking at after that is the MBRP exhaust. I’m very happy with slight mods that have no bearing on smog check. I just hope the MBRP exhaust isn’t loud enough to grab a local cop’s attention.

that's funny you mention the MBRP exhaust. I was literally just watching a youtube clip of it. I miss a louder exhaust note. I'm just looking for one with the least amount of drone though. Also I believe "any exhaust" modification is considered illegal here. It used to be anything over 95 dbs (i think, i could be wrong). But it being a newer car with stock tips, i'm sure the fuzz wouldn't pay us any attention

CJ pony parts started to address the whole “exhaust law” controversy and even measured exhausts they sold the same way the law states it is to be measured. Surprisingly, there are a lot of exhausts that pass under the dB law. I think the MBRP exhaust is well under the dB law as long as the mid pipes don’t go cat less.

Catback is legal but subject to decibel levels. Any reasonable catback should be fine.

My god you CA guys have a lot of horse:poop: restrictions to put up with.

A lot more cars which means a lot more smog potentially. It’s not a bad thing, just a pain in the ass.

Yeah, I get being environmentally friendly. I personally feel like I offset enough carbon through my job that I can get away with having a car that's a little more fun than a hybrid; I'd have a Tesla if I owned a house to securely charge it at and didn't drive as many annual miles as I do. Truthfully an electric car will probably be what I replace the Stinger with once its time to do so.

All that said, sometimes I wonder what the people at CARB are smoking.
