Installation of Mirror with HomeLink and Compass

Do the stock Stinger buttons stay lit ALL the time?
If they do, I don't have them set bright enough to notice. If yours are lit, I would imagine that is the case for all cars - they probably don' t use separate power circuits between the lighting and homelink, compass, etc.

The lighting and compass is def powered ONLY when ignition is on. The homelink GDO buttons are powered ALWAYS (ignition on or off). I was hoping the backlighting would be "switched" with the other backlighting in the car but all is well. Better to have it lit during daylight then unlit during night!! Looks damn good when sun goes down. Shame Kia did not add this to the US market.

Received mine from ebay today ($55) and I installed It tonight. Works like a charm! Same specs and model as above.. OEM part from KIA and others was at least $250. Money well spent!

Yeah, ill see if i can find a model number this evening...

Mine has the homelink with integrated compass...the other two buttons (far right)(not the garage buttons) power the auto dimming and compass display respectively.

Did you ever get the model number for the stock US Homelink mirror (the one you removed)? I'm looking to install one in my base GT, and the homelink/gps buttons in the fancy Canadian version are kinda pointless when the car doesn't have the GPS option installed, haha.

Assuming the Homelink and Compass hardware are in the mirror, that mirror should work fine in the base GT.

Let me post those this evening or tomorrow. i had the pic on my phone but it is gone now. Im ok with the buttons not working since they look so good lit up at night!!!

For some reason I am not able to program mine.. did you have any issues programming yours? Which buttons did you press to sync it?

Have to clear the mem by holding the 1 and 3 GDO buttons until it quick blinks
Then copy transmitter code to mirror by holding both desired GDO button on clicker button. Must hold them close together. Wait till mirror fast blinks again.
Press "learn" button on opener
Press desired GDO (same one you just copied too) button a few times

The instructions stated the last step should be three presses...mine took about 6 before it actually synched up. THIS has occurred with all the GDO mirrors we have so not sure if its my opener or what. Opener is at least 15 years old.

I printed the instructions right from the Gentex Website if that helps. Same as the manual states. Except that mine took more presses on the last step.

There is also a video they have on their website.

Here is the website...HomeLink

ok..thanks..I'll give it one more try... Which Stinger model do you have. I am wondering if the unit I purchased is damaged..as the compass works fine and all the lights come on.... Nothing seems to happen with I press the Homelink buttons.

Mine is a GT2.
The mirror active light should be on when powered up. Same light that flashes/blinks during programming and operation. Even before i programmed mine, pressing of the GDO buttons caused this light to temporarily turn red and then back to green. Does pressing any GDO button cause this light to turn red. IF not, may be an issue with the mirror.

I have the GT.. I would think it would work for all GT,GT1, and GT2... The light remains green when pressing the GDO button(s)... I am thinking it must be the mirror...

Does it blink red if press the 1 and 3 buttons together? That is how you clear it.

Model should not matter so long as the mirror is powered. The garage opener piece is self contained in the mirror housing...nothing to do with the car other than needed power.

No blinking.... I sent it back... so and ordered another one through someone else.. Hopefully the new one will work ...

Sorry to hear. That was my only fear too. Hopefully no issues with the return and fingers crossed for the next one!

Awesome, thanks! Found a few on ebay for ~$60-80. Not bad, though now I'm worried about getting a dud like Randal did... You thinking about selling yours? :p

How was the install? I'm assuming it's a super easy "Remove the cover, plug it in, slide it in till it clicks, put the cover back on, done", but who knows. Lol.

Install super easy. One screw .. I used an Allen wrench.. since I bought mine off ebay it has the purchase protection plan. The seller sent me packing label and it should be refunded no problem. So no worry there.

Sent you a PM...

Well I found the issue. The wiring harness on the GNTX 1027 has different pin positions than the stock one from my GT. The 1027 has a red wire in (position 6) as the stock GT harness pin position 6 is open. I believe will have to determine the power wire in the stock harness then run it to position 6 on the 1027 harness.

Just installed the stock GT2 mirror in my GT, and am not getting homelink either. Looks like it takes power from a different pin, which isn't wired in the GT. Probably easy enough to fix, but kind of a pain in the butt. Compass works at least! That's what I was wanting the most.

I installed the generic Gentex frameless in my GT2 and had to switch pins around in the Gentex harness. Turns out the wire I tested as constant in my car shuts off in reverse. I put my GT2 mirror in the wife’s Optima because her car only had auto dimming and not homelink. The GT2 mirror homelink buttons will quit working periodically in the Optima so my guess is there is some circuitry in the harness so it works with the GT2 wiring but I haven’t had time to crack it open and look. The odd thing is I remember seeing a wiring diagram here on the forums and it seemed like there should be constant power. But I only tested one wire as constant. Unless the ground does something goofy.

I’ve been meaning to write all this up once I figured it out but I started backing into the garage for space reasons so I never use homelink in reverse and it dropped on my priority list. I do need to figure out why the GT2 mirror works inconsistently in the Optima.
