Things are really getting ugly at car dealerships...

The lease on my wife's 2018 Kia Stinger is up and the average retail is more than $13k higher than the residual so we decided that we'll just write a check and buy the car. In Florida you have to go to the dealership to make the transaction so they can get another bite at the apple again I guess. So I call the dealer where we leased it to make an appointment and I wanted to confirm that I just need to pay the residual, $990 dealer fee, tax and tags. The salesman says that they have an additional $500 convenience fee and a few other fees. So I say that doesn't sound too convenient and said thanks anyway. So I call the next closest dealer and she says their dealer fee is only $799 and there are no other fees so we head over there. When we get there I notice that all they have is used cars... So anyway we go in and ask them to write up the buyout. The sales guy comes out and hands me the invoice. He added an $895 inspection fee and a $500 doc fee and $800 to transfer the tags in addition to the dealer fee of $801. SMH... So I said what is this inspection fee ? He said we have to inspect the car because we have to make sure it's safe so you don't come back and sue us. I said... how long does the inspection take ? He says less than an hour...

I tell him that I refuse to pay it and he says there's nothing he can do so I walk out.

So I drive over to dealer where we leased the car and this is where the fun really starts... I pull in the parking lot and there are no new cars on the lot and 8 or 10 salespeople standing outside talking and smoking and hanging out. As I'm getting out of the car and I'm turning to close the door a salesman rushes out to greet me before I even turn around which rubbed me the wrong way. So I tell him we are there to buy out the lease on our Stinger and he says ok come in. We walk in and the only car in the showroom is a used 2021 Stinger so he points and says what do you think of this one. I say that's OK I just want to buy out the lease on my car and he looks a little upset and confused. Anyway... he goes into the sales office for about 10 minutes and walks out with an invoice and hands it to me. I look and he added a $5k ADM a $990 dealer fee and a $750 doc fee plus the tax and a loan payment which is almost twice what we were paying on the lease.

So first I tell him I don't want a loan and I just want to write a check and he says ok. Then I tell him that I'm not paying the ADM and the fees and let him know that I called Kia finance and they confirmed that I only need to pay the Residual, the tax, the dealer fee and the transfer fee. He said "No you don't understand ... this car is worth way more than we are charging you and we don't even have to sell it to you". I said No... I have a contract here that says I can buy the car at the end of the lease for the residual... He says No... if you read the fine print we don't have to honor that price...

Now people are starting to look at us because our voices are escalated a bit. So I say fine... I'll just go to another dealer and they'll get the dealer fee... He says that I can't do the buyout at another dealer... I say... just watch and I'm going to tell the whole story on Yelp and about a dozen other websites and I'm going to take this proposal and show it to Kia corporate and I start to put the proposal in my nap sack with my laptop and he says give me that back...
cuss.gif
I said No I'm taking it with me... So he grabs my arm and my bag and my wife starts screaming... TAKE YOUR HANDS OFF MY HUSBAND.... So the guy backs off an a more level headed manager comes out and tells me nicely that he wants the proposal back... So I tell him what just happened but he insisted on getting the paper back so I handed it to him figuring that it was his property and we walk out.

So off we go to yet a third dealer. We walk in and get a friendly greeting, the salesman brings us into his office and I explain what we want to do. He goes back to the manager and comes back with an invoice reflecting almost exactly what I thought the entire transaction would cost. We wait about 10 minutes in the waiting room and the closer calls us in and we were done in 15 minutes...

What a Freaken day....

Just beware if you are going to try to buyout a car lease where you have a lot of equity you could be in for a fight literally...

My lease is up. Decided to buy it out. Have a quote from dealer for The buy out. Quote shows $400 dealer document fees and $175 non taxable fees. Have appointment this week with dealer. Hoping for the best

Well, I'll be swizzled: first thing to greet my eyes as I wake up, come over here to my 'puter, is a story straight out of The Twilight Zone, from ... where exactly did this happen? I thought that Utah was The Twilight Zone.

Umm...what? This vehicle was leased through Kia Financial?
Yes...

We got it Black Friday 2018. There was $8k lease cash plus a dealer discount and they gave us $5,500 for a dead Optima Hybrid that was towed in. The residual was $17,208 and the car only has 27k miles and it's in excellent condition. From what I can tell loaded 2018 Premium's with 27k miles retail around $31k now.

Dealer: You're making out on this deal.
You: Yes I am.
Dealer: NO. YOU'RE. NOT.

Not only would they have not received the proposal back, I would have called the cops and stood there waiting for the police the entire time. They got off easy IMO. And yes, I would have pressed charges. The person who physically touched you had ZERO reason and needs to lose their job and face legal ramifications. They need to be put in their place (you would be doing the community a service, corralling this yahoo).

And you could take pictures of documents with your cell phone.

Don't worry people. It is all transitory. Just couple more weeks to slow the spread. Follow the science. Go back to sleep..... :sneaky:

1 - I agree with the above post that you should have called the police and had this documented. Maybe next time this sales rep gets upset he tugs and hanks the arm of an elderly woman and injures her. What a coward. That's so unprofessional and ridiculous.

2 - Which Florida dealership did this occur?

What a tale indeed.

Ironically I got a survey the other day from some company about the car purchase, thoughts, issues, etc. One area I left neg marks on was the dealership experience. Kia has ways to go to bringing uniform customer service across its dealershit network.

There's a kia dealer less than a mile away. Hell will freeze over before I bring the car there for any work, even warranty. Ghetto!

What a bunch of scumbags. I also didn't know that you had to go into the dealership to buy out your lease. I don't think I went in when I bought out my old Optima.

It depends on what state you live in... I am in Florida...

I had a feeling they weren't just going to let me walk away with a $32k+ car for $17k without pulling some stunts...

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks for the info.

Thanks for the heads up. I've almost pulled the trigger on a Stinger a couple times now and the whole shady Kia dealer network is the one thing that keeps holding me back and this just helps reaffirm I've done the right thing once again.

I currently have a 19 accord 2.0 with 12k miles and a buyout of 22k that I paid 29 for in July of 19. On KBB the trade in value is currently 29K and when I search Autotrader the cheapest 19 2.0 within 300 miles is selling for 33K with 15K miles on it. By those numbers I'm gonna make out 7K minimum, probably more.

Recently I thought it was odd the Honda dealer sent me a letter informing me my lease was coming up soon and to be clear on the terms I can buy it out or turn it in. I'm forbidden to trade it in anywhere else or to transfer it to anybody else. I can live with that even though it was odd. Not in my wildest dreams would I ever experience what you did at a Honda dealer, perhaps a Dodge dealer.

They have to be crazy if they think I'm turning it in for 22K. If they were smart and they needed the cars they'd send a letter saying "hey we know the markets have changed, and as a result you have a lot more equity in your car than the current residual so we'd be willing to give you 28K if you trade it in to us when your lease is up.

That's exactly why people and dealerships get away with this kind of ****.

And you don't really need to take the document with you, just take pictures of it. Did the OP take pictures of the document?

Name of the 3rd dealer?

Kia? Floriduh? Yah not a great combo.

This current dealership model is going to fail and be replaced by something else in the future. With manufactures offering subscription services, that will probably catch on with the younger generation and that dinosaurs sale model is going to die out.

It takes market disrupters to get into the field, gain traction and exposure to allow for change. What's bad is when the top level management is also involved with this kind of behavior. It's always a good idea to take a photo of those paper they hand to you with prices. They want you to sign it to confirm the price you are asking and take it to their manager. They keep that, so why not allow you to keep their document with their rip off prices, if they were so confident to put them in writing. Folks need to snap photos of these things to post for others to know these tactics and also to sent to the manufacturer to let them know what their first line of representation is doing to their customer base.
