My previous car had the gas door on the right side, which is the right (correct) side. It's incredibly inconvenient to have the gas door on the left side, the wrong side. To get far enough away from various obstacles so you can open your door, you're far away from the pump. It's just silly. You should be able to pull up, with the gas door right next to the pump, and then exit on the OTHER SIDE of the car. With the Stinger, though, ugh. Picture:

Almost all my cars have had their fillers on the driver's side..including all 3 I have now.

Do you just park far to the side of the pump, potentially blocking cross traffic, or park really far ahead of the pump? I thought Mustangs filled in the middle of the car, at the rear. Did they change that?

Yes...20+ years ago.

Seriously this can’t be a huge concern. You can park within a couple feet of the pump, open the door without hitting the pump and get out.

Even in your picture, if you backed up 5 feet so you weren’t blocking cross traffic and the door was behind the pole, you could open the door and get out normally.

How do you get out of the car in a parking lot when parked next to another car?

2004 GMC truck on the left, 2017 Legacy on the right and 2008 Maserati on the left ,what are you gonna do.

I rent vehicles for work related travel quite regularly, and I can assure you there isn't any 'correct' side. That's why they have a little arrow in the gas gauge - so you know which side to use when you pull up to the pump.

I have personal vehicles with both left and right. Personally, I find having it on the driver's side more convenient - especially when it's the dead of winter with a stiff breeze blowing ... :)

I’m sorry but I disagree and believe the opposite for left hand drive vehicles. Most of the cars I owned fill gas on the driver side which makes much more sense. It’s safer not standing out in oncoming traffic, and as others have mentioned, easier to get out and stay under cover so you’re more hidden from rain/snow/wind.

Next time just don’t pull your car so far ahead of the pump as courtesy to others and a simple way to eliminate you problem.

Most of the cars I owns it’s always been on the drivers side, only our 2002 Ford Focus has it on the passenger side.

Well, doesn't matter all that much to me. Both of my Holden-built Pontiacs were passenger side so now after 10 years, I have to retrain myself to pull in on the driver-side for fuel. You still have to be far enough away from the pump to get out of the car on the driver's side -- unless you like crawling over the console and your wife to get out. :p

My conspiracy theory is that the gas station owners made the manufacturers pick sides so that there wouldn't be a huge line up and both sides of the pump were able to be used with every one facing the same direction.

Then the invented long hoses...

Puts tin foil hat back on.

I would agree! I much prefer the fuel door on the passenger side. I did not realize that until I got the stinger.

My Mustang is the only one of my vehicles that fills up on the passenger side. My Suburban, Stinger, Sorento and Forte all fill up on driver side.

I don’t think Kia would re position the fuel filler whole just for LHD and RHD. One place that’s it. If you look at the pump symbol in dash there is a small arrow which points to the side where the filler is with a little arrow.

Never owned a vehicle where it wasn't on the drivers side, so I guess I'm biased in thinking that's the "correct" side. That said, I've rented plenty that were not, and found it pretty simple to check the afore-mentioned arrow on the gas gauge before filling up. Also, I get probably 95% of my gas at Costco, and don't care which pump is open, the filler reaches just fine.

As to "crawling out over the passenger" - really? I've only been driving for around 35 years, but I've never encountered a pump that required me to pull up in a way that prevented me opening my door.

It varies from manufacturer to manufacturer and there is no correct way of positioning it. My previous cars, mostly Nissan/Infiniti all had the gas door on the right hand side. Now I am finally getting used to having it on the left hand side.

LOL..my Mustang is on the drivers side. I do like that it's a capless system though.

We don’t experience that problem here in OZ, but I would prefer my fuel filler on the same side as I wouldn’t have to walk so far.
To rectify your problem you could emigrate to a RHD country, get a new Stinger there....problem solved....

I prefer it on the drivers side myself but it's not a huge deal to me if it's on the passenger side.... as long as I remember it's on that side when I pull up to the pump.

Is that Panthera Metal paint in that picture? It sure is purty:)
