I was driving around Seoul the other day and saw a few G70 on the road. Since then I started to see more and more G70s on the road all around Seoul. Much more than I see the Stingers. Given that the G70 has only launched for a few months, it made me wonder if the G70 had been doing better than the Stinger, sales-wise (I went a few Hyundai showrooms at launch to check out the G70 and found no reason why it is priced 5k higher than the Stinger).

Fair enough, I came across this article pointing out sales of about 3,000 G70 in the first week alone.

The full article is here Genesis G70 sales surpass 50% of year target

Also, Hyundai aims to sell about 50,000 G70s comes the end of 2018.

Here is the article Hyundai sets Genesis G70 sales target of 60,000 units next year

The G70 was designed from the start to be a luxury car and KIA held back some to ensure the G70 does well. I’m sure they also limited production of the Stinger because it not like there are Stingers sitting around in dealer inventory and not being sold. While the Stinger does well as is, performance wise, it lacks the level of luxury the Genesis brand has and the G70 was designed to go head to head with the 3 Series. The Stinger is an excercise in ‘look at what we can do”, the G70 is there to build out the Genesis brand’s lineup. Don’t worry, KIA is seeing how much demand there is for the car and will begin to add more, although I feel they will still do less vehicles to help the Genesis brand succeed.

According to some "insider" reports, Kia and Hyundai-Genesis are sort-of siblings like Cadillac and Buick. They each own part of the other and have some kind of non-competitive agreement (probably a bad way of putting it) so that one does not exactly duplicate the products of the other in direct competition even though they share many common resources.

I'm super excited to see what happens with the G70 here in the USA. I've been holding back on buying a Stinger, at first because of the missing features and also for the G70.

Korean people are badge w*****. (J/K:p)
Even though its basically the same car with a similar price tag and only a different design, they somehow think Genesis is a more luxurious brand and this affects the sales a lot.

Sure, same reason why someone would choose a Lexus over Toyota, Acura over Honda, and so on. It's perceived luxury. Tell me what the sales figures were like when it was called the Hyundai Genesis - I'm sure people were hesitant to be paying that kind of money for a Hyundai, regardless of the specs. I can see the same here with the Stinger. The average Kia consumer has price expectations when they go into a Kia dealership, ie. Stinger, Cadenza, K900 prices are out of scope. I see the average Kia consumer as someone buying a Soul, Forte, entry level Optima.

You know Kia is toying with the idea of a luxury line, hence the use of the "E" badge. The Korean market is the starting point, but it'll eventually roll out to all regions. Stinger and K900 will be in that class, but they may throw in the Cadenza as well.

Except that here its the same car, same features, same price tag (only few thousands diff.). Lexus is more expensive than a Toyota and is more than a rebadged Toyota.

For me it has nothing to do with the badge, it's all about features, style and comfort - waiting to check out the G70

I live here. I know why more people pick the G70. ;)
In the US it might be different depending on the price point and the options.

Care to elaborate? I'm sort of between the 2 as well but there seems to be limited information on the G70 (that's not written/spoken in Korean which I can't understand, unfortunately). Is the interior nicer, or are you referring to brand prestige of Genesis vs Stinger?

g70 is faster more luxurious etc.. but I am in love with the look and styling of the stinger. you couldn't pay me to switch to a g70.

-a former genesis owner lol

..................Stingers look like they have DNA from : Audi , BMW , Maseratti , Porsche ................. G70 looks like : Infinity ( jmho )

Are the Stinger and G70 actually competitors? Yes they have the same engine, transmission, and (roughly) price point but the G70 is a compact sedan, about the size of a Toyata Corolla. The Stinger is a midsize coupesedanhatchback. This is like comparing a fully optioned C Class Benz to a fully optioned E Class Benz.

Are they really going head2head?

Brand!
The interior is indeed more luxurious.

Don’t care if the Stinger is ever so slightly slower. If I heard right, the Stinger has more leg room in the back and I bought a sedan/sports car that can fit adults in the back when I need. The styling is, imho, a helluva lot better looking than the G70. As a fan of the G90, I’d buy that car if I wanted true luxury. I bought the Stinger because it had everything I was looking for.

As someone else mentioned...I wouldn’t swap the Stinger for the G70.

Cliche as it sounds, the Stinger has a certain "je ne sais quoi" about it. Take a picture of one part of the body, and you can squint and say "that resembles an Audi/Maserati" etc, but taken as a whole it has design congruence and personality.

More importantly, it's appearance elicits an EMOTIONAL reaction, whether positive or negative (though it would seem more on the positive side, given the reviews I've read and seen). That is something no amount of marketing can create. "Buzz," yes. An honest emotional response to a mechanical conveyance? Not so much :)

I saw three G70s only this morning.
One in my appartment parking lot.(red one)
Two in my company parking lot.(dark grey and dark blue)
No Stingers and I kinda like it that way. ;)
