FAQ: Vibration under braking: warped rotors? NO!

What do you mean by "grabby"? Don't you want your brakes to grab?
Anyway, thanks for sharing and the update.
My stock ones are getting worn, and grab a little less than before (I have to press a little harder on the brake pedal to stop). But I've never had ANY vibrations or problems with them, and no dust.

I switched pads on my Sorento to give them more initial bite or "grabbiness".. if I do the Stinger, I would want the same, but there's so little information out there.

Pads make a huge difference in feel. I generally put EBC HH pads on my bikes for the same reason.

Talk to Nick Lasarrio at Khartunerz, He steered me towards what I wanted, I'm sure he could do the same.

Apologies if this has already been answered. And yes, I've read the instructions on "rebedding" and as soon as I find a vacant airfield I'll give it a shot. ;)

Just curious. Has anyone in AUS had theirs replaced under warranty? My discs got machined under warranty at about 17,000km as they were "warped". Most recent service (40,000km) I told them about the returned shudder (before I read about the rebedding) and they said they couldn't machine the "warped" discs again and wanted $900 to replace them. We had a robust conversation and they said there was nothing they could do. Reading that they've been replaced in the US under warranty is interesting.

Can anyone provide further info?

Thanks.

Canada has 20K Km and US has 12K miles limit on brakes. Aus should be the same. You're far past that. It looks like your first rotor resurfacing was under warranty. Anything that Kia did at this point would be "a good will gesture", which I have read about here a number of times. It seems that not too far out of warranty, Kia is willing to conciliate the customer. The farther beyond warranty, the less likely that the "good will gesture" will be offered.

False.
Canada is 60k kms on brake rotors/disks.

There was a member from Newcastle who had the fronts replaced under warranty at approx 13K. I think you may have left it a bit late for any warranty work.

That's what I thought I had read a while back on here; but I went looking before I posted and saw this: Kia Warranty Program | Kia Insurance | Kia Canada

"1-year/20,000 km - First-year adjustments covering consumable items such as bulbs, wiper blades, fuses, brake pads, etc.*"

So, I assumed it had either changed or I got it wrong. The link to the 2020 manual shows what you posted. Now, the question is, does Aus have the shorter or the longer warranty? The US warranty manual doesn't mention "rotors/discs" at all:

"Brake linings, including pads and shoes, and clutch linings are warranted for 12 months/12,000 miles, whichever comes first, if they fail to function properly during normal use."

Despite some passionate feelings on this, the manufacturer doesn't consider it to be a defect in material or workmanship.

I, of course, agree. And so does the majority of Stinger drivers. But that doesn't answer the problems others have. Parallel with brakes today we see quite a lot of resumed talk about cruise controls not operating smoothly. This is far more complex than brake pads and rotors, which are in essence an Old School problem. Cruise control is tied into the ECU, the entire computer network of the car. It isn't just simply a matter of pulling a part and replacing it. I'm sure that Kia isn't alone in pulling their hair out over stuff like this, on today's enormously complex cars.

Found this interesting. It goes into a moderately-high level of detail on brake shudder / shake inspection and correction. Since I cannot post links yet, search KNS Brakes Brake Judder.

Same here. Should work for another 5-10k miles. Hopefully by then the aftermarket steps in and provides some better options.

There are great options now at KNS Brakes. I have no affiliation with them but am ordering F/R Hawk HPS 5.0 pads from them today. They have less and more aggressive F/R compounds too.

With the warranty for the brakes in the us do you think I would be able to get them replaced even at 15k miles on the car? Or has anyone found any good replacements that aren’t too expensive and if I replace them do the rotors need to be cleaned of the deposits before I use new ones?

The dealer replaced my front rotors under warranty at 26K miles. Kia USA knows this is a big problem. The dealer may or may not be aware. It may help to call the Kia VIP line first and then let the dealer know you've been in contact with them. 855-454-2847.

did you get them installed yet? how do they feel?
Hey! So I've been driving with 4 new rotors + 4 new EBC RedStuff pads for about 2 weeks & 500km, now. I'm still in the recommanded EBC bedding procedure, but MAN does it changes the bite on the brakes!! I had a bit of a high pitch squeal, for the first 200km, then a bit of vibration when cold (for the first 5-7 minutes) for the next 200km. Now, they're starting to settle in pretty nicely. Another 250-300km and I'll do the 10 consecutives 60 to 10 mph hard braking to finalize bedding them in.

I know 2 others guys who had the same problem as me and went with EBC YellowStuff pads (one step above, in terms of performance level : track rated), when getting 4 new rotors. They both love their pads. You can't go wrong with either the red or yellow stuff. Know that yellow is more agressive, though.

Hope this helps :)

Stoopid question, please excuse my lack of desire to search all 576 replies, if I were to purchasr new higher quality pads, with the 18k miles on my 2018 GT, would these alleviate that annoying brake shutter after a proper bedding of said new pads? Looking at Hawk or G-Loc and do not mind any type of noise or dust over these aweful soft craptastic pads Kia put on, but don't want to waste my time if the rotors are the problem.

I think the first post has a burnishing procedure that can mostly correct the rotors. Then swap in new pads and bed them.

But FIRST, go to the dealership and make them replace all 4 rotors under warranty. This is a known problem with our Stingers, KIA replaces warped rotors more often than you changes underwear. Switch the new pads in at the same time and start fresh with brand new brakes.
