Engine Replacement, The Full Story.

a dealer in CA of all places recommended mods? ill be damned. aren't you a lucky SOB haha
yeah lol. i was very hesitant at first but then he started to show me his modded up mustang and also explained that at a different kia one of the car salesman owned a pretty beefed up stinger himself. super cook people at livermore kia in the bay area!!! its a new dealership i believe

Since I don't see any mention of it in the 3 pages of posts since the original I'm thinking that you all have dismissed K&N filter oil as a possible cause? Asking for a friend.
Yes?

I really don't know or have anything to contribute on this. But please someone, answer this man's question even if it's idk .

Sorry, missed this. yes, its been dismissed because our cars don't have the sensor that could be damaged. @byebyeSTI answered the question as well somewhere on this thread if you can translate it

yes the oiled filters cannot cause any damage at all . if we had maf sensors inline with oiled filters the oil can coat the maf and give false readings or damage it , not the case with the 3.3t

I used to have a ‘98 SVT Mustang Cobra with a CAI and K&N filter. It uses a MAF sensor and never had an issue.

its not a huge deal on most cars depends how sensitive the maf is , if its a hot wire design or not

The SHOs only had problems when folks over-oiled the filter. And even then all it did was make the car act funky until the MAF was cleaned off. It never caused an engine failure. That's just stupid.

Agreed. You only need a very light misting of oil on them. People just don’t follow instructions.

I'm still not clear on how a 'no heat' issue called for a complete replacement of the engine - what was their reasoning?

It doesn't make much sense at all.

They could not figure out the issue, so they took everything that could possibly be the cause, and gave me a new one. the quick answer is "FOR SCIENCE!"

My Volvo hated K&N filter oil.

I was that guy not following instructions years and years ago. Had a Pontiac Grand Prix with the bolt on K&N's. I very much over oiled them. The oil then dripped all over the ECU (if I remember correctly, the ECU slipped in the bottom of the filter box or something of the sort). The kicker, I had given the car to my mom and one day she said the engine would start and stop at a light and would act funny.

I had to go to her work, pick up the car and try to drive the car to the dealer without hitting any red lights. I made it, not one red light (turning down side streets, making lefts when I had to go right, etc)... fun experience. Not sure why I felt I had to do that.

In any event, they opened up the ECU and...lot's of K&N oil redness inside. I was ashamed. I blamed it on my mom. JK... I took full responsibility. Live and learn and realizing that if I can't even do that...I should not be working on cars.

So intakes with an oily filter caused an engine failure? I have the bms intakes. I was told intakes were very safe. I always take them off before going to the dealer. I thought I was taking a bigger risk with the jb4? Sorry to hear about the OP engine loss.

I know all about blowing an engine with mods. Blew up my 2.7 ecoboost with custom turbos. Don’t want to go there again. Not fun paying for an engine and installation out of pocket. I was without a car for 2 months when the local mechanic left town in the middle of the job. Car was not under warranty with all the mods I had. As I was told you pay to play.

No, he didn’t blow the engine. Just couldn’t get consistent heat from the heater and Kia had no clue what was wrong so wanted it back at the factory to try and figure it out.

this is correct!

Soooo...I have a 2018 GT2 with 136,000 miles on it and I have been trying to diagnose this exact same issue. I bought this car new and have zero mods. The problem has not been present until this winter. The only change is, I updated the infotainment system over the summer. Has KIA corporate shared any of their findings? Would love to get this fixed but I'm not interested in a DIY engine swap or a $17k dealership swap.
