Downpipes vs. Full Exhaust

Why does no one talk about back pressure here? I understand all turbo vehicles have a back pressure sensor that ensures proper air/fuel:boost ratios. The only reason I hesitate with down pipes on the Stinger is for this reason alone. You can actually lose significant torque with a poorly designed turbo exhaust.

Because no one is building a 4” catless straight pipe exhaust. Nothing I’ve seen posted looks like there will be any issues with back pressure.

3”/2.5” pipe with a cat and a muffler should be fine to keep sufficient backpressure to not lose torque on the low end.

In turbo cars the exhaust wheel in the turbo provides the required back pressure, any additional flow after the turbo will increase both power and torque. Our cars and generally most OBD2 cars are equipped with two oxygen (02) sensors, pre & post of the main catalytic converter. The pre 02 sensor monitors the air/fuel ratio the post 02 sensor monitors the performance of the catalytic and whether it is working right or not.

Great stuff! Thank you

This may or may not help, but I got the SSR downpipe for my Stinger GT. It fits pretty tight. There is absolutely no drone or increased sound that I can tell. They claimed increase of 30 horsepower as well which I'm skeptical of, but it should help the spool up time on the turbos and it certainly doesn't hurt . Like you, I'd be fine with a 10 horsepower increase.

I got the GT type (non-EVC) from Jun BL and I don't intend to bash the product, which I think is fine.
Anyway, it was supposed to be one of the most drone-free of all models. But still...
When driving in city or when driving aggressively, the sound was really good and almost no drone.
But when cruising on the highway just around the speed limit, this is when the drone was the worst (around 2k~2.5k RPM). Of course I could avoid that RPM range but by doing so, I was forced to drive a bit slower than the speed limit (=than the traffic). What I didn't like most is that when I was trying to pass someone, normally it is super easy, a little more gas and the car passes everyone, right? But with the exhaust, a little more gas means you enter that specific RPM range and cabin noise gets super loud, the car vibrates... (Giving it more gas to go over 3k RPM and within seconds you're over 120mph which is not always the purpose). So whenever I wanted to go a little bit faster, it felt like the car was struggling, which ironically made the car feel slower to me (when cruising).
When driving aggressively, no complain, but I'm not street racing everyday to go to work or to the supermarket...
Maybe all exhaust mods are like that and I wasn't aware of it, but for me (and my girlfriend) it had more cons than pros. My friends, however, thought it was super good. But at the end of the day, I'm the one driving so after 2 weeks of trying to get used to it, I reverted to the stock exhaust.
I think it depends on people's taste, expectation and sensitivity. It is not for everyone and if you are not familiar with exhaust modifications, I would recommend trying the exhaust on another car first before making a decision.

The cold start sound was badass though.:D
Would you say it was bad enough to affect cabin talking or what volume level of music would cancel this out? I want the gt style. I want to hear the exaust but not mustang gt loud. The vibration concerns me though also? I think the cabin is way too quiet and the fake exaust sound I thaught would satisfy is not enough. Could you elaborate just a little more on that drone level at hyway cruising speed. If you could compare a volume level. Thanks

I wouldnt mind if the tire and road noise was drowned out by the exhaust, but not much louder at cruising speed.

After hearing the ARK exhaust and JunBL titanium exhausts in other Stingers, I can say that the JunBL GT was not so bad in terms of drone. Its not a pleasant sound in the specific RPM range but was definitely not loud enough to prevent from having a conversation.

Question:
Is there a way to remove the primary cats without triggering a CEL? I want the power but I don't want the CEL..

Tunes can take care of the cel but may have overboost issues. Lap3 seems to handle these best. But its probably not worth the $ and headache for 3 hp. Bottom dyno chart at link....

Are you running any intakes with that?

Curious if AWD is a determining factor on drone since it is random whether people are getting drone with Borla, ark, jun bl, etc.

Do you mind sharing if you are RWD or AWD?

RWD. But to be honest I have never heard of a car without drone with Ark, Borla or JunBL exhaust. Have you ever sat in the car of a person who says he/she has no drone?

I don't think it's random whether people are getting drone, I just think everybody has a different definition and tolerance for it. It doesn't make it any easier trying to make a decision on sound based on YouTube phone recordings - you really need to hear an exhaust in person to realistically assess how you perceive the sound. I see a lot of posts where people make a decision on a particular brand, then are surprised (often negatively) with the results after doing the installation.

As far as I've seen, the cat back exhausts are pretty much the same regardless of drive type - there do appear to be some minor differences in the midpipes and mounting points.

I have agency power intakes and ssr catless mid pipes (oddly referred to on this forum as downpipes). In my humble opinion - there is a VERY noticeable increase in power. Car is much more lively. While I haven’t put the car on a dyno - I could absolutely see the 30hp gain being real. Additionally - the sound HAS increased and to me, sound perfect - the way the car should have sounded from factory. Just my 2 cents.

In Korean forums the secondary cat delete is also refered as downpipes. :D
Do you have a stock catback?
I wonder if I will see the same power increase with the JunBL mid pipes.. Is it the same design?
Most people I ask (outside this forum) tell me that:
if you want more sound -> remove secondary cats
if you want more power -> remove primary cats

Scroll up to post 69 and click the link. Primary cats 3 hp when tuned. Lots of miss information to clear up.

Sorry, it seems that I missed your post.

Dyno is one thing, but the cars that have primary cats removed are actually faster by 2~3 car length on a 1000 mile straight line. (rolling start 40mph@2nd gear)

I'm sure faster spool time helps but 2-3 car lengths is alot.

Ok 1 more question. I just want get off of the gt exaust. When cruising on hyway was drone much louder than road noise? With radio on low and talking to passengers would the exaust be heard or annoying. I am concerned with wife on longer drives. I just think the note is a little better than evc open. So confused. Thanks Rob

Yes it is annoying especially when cruising, but it depends on each person's sensitivity. I was never annoyed by road noises. I recommend that you find someone with this exhaust and ask for a test drive.
