so if these chips aren't caused by rock impacts, when do they occur? Do they just flake off at random times? If so, would they appear on a car that has been sitting on a dealer lot for over 3 months? My local dealer has 3 vehicles that have been there since at least early March. If chips haven't appeared on these cars yet, would that mean they probably won't in the future?

Maybe vibration from driving exacerbates the problem. This is certainly a new one, though I’ve had paint issues on my 2002 Acura.

Yeah probably at least need to hit bump or a bug for the paint to chip off .

Yeah and this seems more chronic than any car I’ve owned. I hope it gets rectified. Kia needs to if they want to elevate themselves. A bunch of angry customers of moderately expensive cars has to do the right thing.

I think people may need to start realizing that there may not necessarily be a cause, simply just bad QC and/or practice consistency in order to match the production needs of an initial launch. It’s been we’ll documented the fragmented release strategy and processes they had on the roll out...

I had an interesting experience today. Stopped by my installer I use for mods. He loved the car! Thought I said Stingray! LOL He looked at my chip. Without a beat he said it was touched up. I didn’t notice this as I must be dense. I saw the chip but there is something going on there. It’s multi level so I’m not sure of anything anymore. Going to bring it in and let the dealer fix it. I didn’t touch it up and it wasn’t a rock as I’d have a chipped windshield.
Interesting that it was already touched up, and as you posted before it wasn't a spot where it would be wiper arm interference damage. As others have posted similar damage on the back edge of the hood (one of the most protected areas on the car), I wonder if Kia had an assembly line issue with the hood installation process, or the cradle that brought the hood up to the line to be attached.

Maybe. Who really knows anymore.

I don't think the rudimentary touch up you showed in your photo would have been done at the factory, as there is no way that would pass internal QA. So yes, who knows where along the process it happened and/or was noticed - whatever the cause, hopefully it was a one-time issue.

Me too. I’m taking it in this morning. So we will see how it’s handled. My sales guy said it will be fixed so I think it will and I can get it Xpel covered.

Hey my name is Brendan and Im from Sydney, Australia and was one of the first in the world to take delivery of a Sunset Yellow Stinger last October. About 24hrs after I collected the vehicle, I noticed the first chip in the paint. What followed was an alarming number of them and some very tense and honest discussions between myself, the dealer and Kia Australia. The car was inspected three times and finally after trying to play hardball, Kia agreed to respray the entire car, which took six weeks. I only received it back one week ago. From what was explained to me, this issue exists on every stinger manufactured to date and the issue is that they applied an etch primer on the raw panels and then applied a white base coat which they baked at high temp. for a considerable amount of time. Then they applied the colour and clear etc and baked again. Apparently there shouldn’t normally be an etch primer nor should they fully bake the white base coat. They did it apparently because they were having issues with the paint adhering to the bonnet because it’s aluminium and Kia have never used aluminium panels before. So they developed this process and rather than just use it on the bonnet, they did the whole car so there wasn’t any cosmetic difference. However the process is not a proven way of making paint adhere to aluminium, let alone any other surface. It was suggested that they were desperate to get the car into production and meet deadlines to they did what they had to, which has ended up with where we are today. To anyone affected, if I can offer advice.....push for a total respray. Individual panels will not fix the issue as it will likely appear on others later on, not to mention trying to colour match. I reiterate that when they removed my front and rear bumpers, paint was literally flaking off the concealed surfaces. They also replaced both bumpers and the bonnet. The bonnet was replaced as the original was used in destructive testing at PPG at Eastern Creek in Sydney and then sent to Korea is my understanding. There were also executives from Korea, in Australia who inspected my vehicle. Apparently any warranty claim greater than $5k, must be approved by head office in Korea. So it isn’t Kia US or Canada or Australia that you will be battling. They will most likely be on your side even if it doesn’t seem it. They originally offered me a full refund and refused to assist me in buying another one. I told them to forget it and that I would keep the car and go to the media, get the paint independently tested to find out the real issue, as well as park it outside their biggest dealers every weekend. That is when they finally agreed to a respray. Even during respray, it took quite a bit of effort to get the body in a clean condition and rid of all of the original etch primer and base coat. You can just tell now how much better the paint is. It even looks and feels thicker (stupid I know) I hope this helps and feel free to hit me up via email..... bren1979@gmail.com if you have any questions or need more info. I want to help as many people as possible. Cheers Brendan

Thanks for posting - certainly sounds plausible, as the majority of issues I've seen posted have the paint color coat (and clear coat) separating cleanly from the base underneath, as if there is zero adhesion in that area. It seems to be affecting some cars more than others, so I wonder if they made some running changes when they realized they had issues.

The explanation and spots he saw, are exactly whats happening. Paint and clear come right off leaving perfect white primer underneath. I have 3 spots where everything has come off and all thats left is bare metal.

Call me an idiot, whatever, but I believe Kia will make this right. They worked to hard and to long to get this car out to just let this go and they want it to succeed. Time will tell, but so far they have been very different than most other manufacturers about any issues.

This fits with the chipping I have on the hood, bumper, and fenders. You can clearly see the primer. I don’t know what should be done to fix this, all i hope is Kia is proactive and will help cover costs incurred by people who installed clear bras or ceramic coating in an attempt to try to prevent the chipping.

Thanks for posting this!

Sigh, another reason you never buy a first year car. It’s 2018; paint? You’d have never convinced me a car company doesn’t know how to paint a car. Even after I went through paint issues with my 2002 Acura.

Thanks for the share @KiaofMuncie .
@Joseph Spiegel I agree, but if they were trying to a new process things happen. This sounds like a situation of unintended consequences.

Let’s see how Kia responds and addresses the owners affected. Hopefully the volume is low enough that they can genuinely address the issues and just not bandaid us.

I would tend to think volume could be significant. With that being said.......I think I hear the 19s rolling off the line.

Can someone insert a poll or something else to keep up statistics? 2 groups : those affected and those not; for the latter group indication of the colour of the Stinger and having the car coated or otherwise protected (x-pel, …) might be usefull too. Keeping track of growing numbers of people concerned will be usefull if ever this has to go to court.

The customer service reps you call can't answer any questions about fixes, reimbursement, solutions, etc. They can do only what they did which is give you a case number and how to start moving forward. You will have to go to a dealer for them to take pictures and submit everything under your case number. From what it seems like, Kia is taking these issues on a case by case basis but they definitely aren't telling us to go pound sand.

Fair enough.

@KiaofMuncie thanks for posting that comment from Youtube, I'll be emailing him.

I called a different dealership yesterday and setup an appointment, earliest they could do was Tuesday. Maybe it's common but this dealership also only had one paint person, and they only come in one day a week, and it cannot be raining. Just like the other dealership I went to. The gal making the appointment also wouldn't take my case number shrug I'll make sure they do when I'm actually there.

Today, when getting out of my car and heading into the office, I noticed three more spots on the passenger side door. At least I'll have more ammo when I go in now, other then them just looking at the ones under the protection.

Please excuse the mop in the background ;) and the focus, had a hard time getting it to focus in that light, made my Black car look like a mirror. These must have just happened because I almost always walk around my car after I park it now, to check for these and touch them up. As I said previously, these chips keep happening, in fact one of these looks like one I tried to touch up months ago and the paint didn't stay (I only used the paint pen, no primer/clear coat). For reference, these are all about 6 inches apart from each other.

I just went to the Kia website to update my case with the pictures in my previous post, and was met with this.

WTF Kia? Why are you doing your best to get me to hate you?

EDIT: I immediately called their Stinger customer line back, not the one in the screenshot. Spoke to a Michael this time, he seemed more pleasant to speak with. I guess they read the note I left in the case, that I had taken it to a dealership at the beginning of the year and didn't receive help (or knowledge of the customer line or creating a case), as evidence that the case was closed so they closed it. Pretty flimsy excuse, but he apologized and reopened it for me, then took the information for which dealer I was bringing it to this time.

Don't add anything, don't give pics, and especially the hell with what ANY dealer says. They don't have a say so in this fight, no decision making, no power, nothing. Just let Kia open the case, the dealer when you go to get them to take pictures will try and give you shut about anything. Tell them to take the pictures, here is my case number, submit it. Give it 48 hrs, and then call the Customer Service line back and check up on it. If nothing has been done, then get a little pissed and ask them why the dealer can't follow simple instructions to provide them the information they asked for.

Not jumping on anyone, or trying to force an issue, but I could give 2 shits what a dealer service dept or 'tech' thinks or wants to pressure me into believing. This starts and ends with Kia and it's their issue to solve, period. I had to get firm with the local dealer that Kia told me to go to and have pics done. The dealer gave me a piss poor attitude to start, but once Kia got the pics and the district rep was involved, it was a different story.

Bottom line, tell Kia you have problems and go from there. Let them tell you what dealer to go to, and go there. Call Customer Service standing in front of the service 'techs' and see what happens. I did
