Cylinder misfire and blown spark plug with LAP3 tune

Also of note, he has (had) 424 whp! That's about 500 hp at the crank. I wonder how many SK Stingers have broken the 500 hp barrier. Is it common on those forums?

That at least will tell us (eventually) what weaknesses the drive train may have as the power is increased.
Most people in korean forums drive stock, so I would not say common, but among people who modify their car for performance I've seen quite a number of of people having with over 400 at the wheels.

The parts came in today. Replace both spark plug and coil. Vehicle drive perfect now with no misfire.
Thanks for the update! How many miles on the car since the new plug and coil?

The vehicle have 1800 miles. These are stock spark plug. Just finish the car today. Did not do the upgraded plugs. I believe the customer will leave the tune off for now.

Just picked it up. Runs like new. Thanks Tran!

Chip will remain in the garage until there’s more data available with the upgraded plugs. I’ll keep folks posted if there are further problems on the stock setup.

I’ll keep folks posted. I’m thinking it was the gas and 91 setting combo. I’m typically religious about fueling up with higher quality (shell) gas. Was informed lesser quality gas and this chip is a bad marriage. Last fillip was an “unknown” vendor in the boonies. Two days ago starting getting a flashing CEL (no beuno). Took off the chip. Drove it the next day and the CEL came and stayed. Dealer reset it and it’s off, but I get a pronounced shutter under heavy boost. So I now drive like it’s a mini van until i can swap the plug out (available only thru Kia). Hopefully, that’s all it is.
When running the LAP3 it is suggested that you change the plugs. HKS M45IL is the recommendation. You can buy them on K5Optima Stores web site. I ordered a set with my LAP3. Will find out soon enough if they solve the plug issue.

Please keep us posted. You should know fairly quickly if they’re the fix. Only took about 100mi for mine to get cooked. May the force be with you.

I will not install anything in my personal vehicle or a customer vehicle that will cause damage to the engine without any real test data.

If any one is following me on this thread I installed the HKS 45IL spark plugs today. Running the JB4 right now but haven’t ran it on tune #2 yet which it seemed to have some issues for one driver with stock plugs. I’m going to run done data logs for Burger then switch to the LAP3 chip to see if anything happens with the HKS plugs. I also closed the gap to 24k from the stock 34-36k on the factory NGK’s should help with gap blow out. Will keep updates posted. Weather isn’t going to be good for a while but when it breaks I’ll get some good hard runs in.

If stock plug were in the mid .030 thou range I have no trouble believing misfires are occurring with increase in boost. Even .005 can make a big difference. Most tuned turbo cars need a 7 or 8 heat range plug gapped to.022-.026 range. If you are upping the boost, change your plugs. FI tuning 101

Like I’ve said in other posts, I’m use to running diesel tuning and big boost. My truck runs 68psi but again doesn’t have spark plugs to worry about.

The HKS plugs come pregapped with that range of ~0.028 so they should be spot on out of the box!

Never.. Ever... Ever... Run plugs out of the box. Takes all of 3 seconds to check with a feeler gauge ( don't use those radial disk crappy things). Given the pain of removing the IM to get to passenger side, take time and gap at .024 and do it once. Gives you done buffer for gap erosion

Oh I know, I’m mainly stating they are supposed to be pregapped to the shorter length (not stock length). We ALWAYS recommend checking HKS plug gap before installing

And they were. +/- .001. I went with the 24k just to be on the safe side. Hoping not to have to take them out again. Just a question though? The heat range on the stock NGK is the same as the 45il’s your selling as recommended? Why not just recommended re-gapping the stock plug. The work to do it is the same as to replace but a lot less expensive?

Incorrect. Stock are heat range 7 on ngk scale. The hks 45s are equivalent to a 9, with the 40s being 8. I actually think 9 is a little over kill for minor mods ( ie adding 100hp or so) if you were doing a big turbo build the 45s might be more appropriate, but the 40s are probably fine. The gap is the major concern. I wouldn't doubt gaping down stock plugs would likely cure the misfires
