Continued Rotor Issues

Forum newbie here. Test drove a 2020 (GT Indigo) and really loved it .... Do any of you with the brake shudder problems have 2020s? (In other words, any chance that Kia began shipping the US-bound ones with better brake pads/etc.?)

Howdy and welcome. If anyone with a 2020 Stinger has complained of pad deposits (pulsating/shuddering), I haven't read it on here (or maybe it was a singular post and I forgot).

You won’t hear yet for 2020 unless they have really high mileage.

Except that plenty of complaints for MY18 have come in well under 10K miles.

Yeah, I could've put 10k on 2020 by now probably, depending when they came out.... I imagine it's easy to to have a lead foot on both the accelerator AND the brakes in a Stinger, haha ..... Funny: You see "Brembo" and think, "I'm dialed." But then you read on the forum "inferior Stinger brake pads" or the like? Hmmm, doesn't compute, at least not to an amateur enthusiast like me..... Still, one would think Kia would have made adjustments by now. Even the Car and Driver reviewer had the problem early on and, despite taking it in for warranty work, never got it fully fixed, not even by the end of their 40k mile test ..... on a 2018, was it? (but they loved the car, regardless.)

Yes, the Car and Driver was a MY18. The Motor Trend "Hot Lap" Kia Stinger GT: 2018 Motor Trend Best Driver's Car Contender puts the brakes and over all handling of the Stinger into a perspective that I like to return to. Excellent performance drivers know how to get the most out of a car. Interestingly, no mention was make of poor brakes by any of these guys. True, they didn't lap more than a handful of times. But at 10/10ths? That should have ruined the brakes if you go by most of what you read here.

I've read on here that Kia gives Euro-spec pads on request now. I don't know how to confirm that.

It's really irrelevant how the brakes work when pushing them hard for a magazine test because

a.) no one drives these cars balls-to-the-wall 24/7, and
b.) heating them up and getting the deposits off the rotors is what fixes it. Of course they didn't experience the problem.

Appears to be the same Kia part number from 2018 to 2020, 58101-J5A51. I'm going to assume it's the exact same pad unless they quietly updated the composition, which normally, for an OEM, would include a new part number to supersede the old one but who knows.

The North America-spec pads are less than stellar for a typical daily driver, there's really no way around that. Mine develops shuddering every 2500 miles or so. I just go out and accelerate to highway speeds and jam the brakes on, which seems to correct it for a while. I'll probably throw new pads on it this winter because I'm pretty sick of it. That being said, it doesn't really take away from my enjoyment of the car since it's easily remedied, it's just annoying.

The euro pad part number is 58101-J5A55 if anyone cares to try ordering those.

Front only. It looks like Power Stop makes an "extreme" pad now. I never liked the PS pads I've run in the past, but maybe the high end ones are better.

I switched over to Hawk HPS pads ($150) when they replaced my rotors at 5K miles. They have more bite than OEM but they also have more dust and noise. I ran some Akebono pads on my S4 that were great. I have them sitting in my garage but have yet to install them.

My Hawk HPS 5.0 front pads ($160) just arrived today, going to put them in this weekend. I’m at 22k miles and I’ve rebedded the oem system a few times now.

I still want to get this awesome car, but, dang, so many pro reviews cite the brake pad/rotor issue (like the latest one I read, the Automobile 20K long-term test of a '18 Stinger....... Have any of you who put in the Khartunerz or other such new pads 100-percent abso-total-lutely eradicated the shaking problem after doing so?

I have almost 40k now 30k+?after the dealer replace with OEM rotors had been replaced an no issues, most of my driving is all HW so that may make a difference.

I replaced front rotors with drilled and slotteds, and replaced pads with stoptech ceramics from KT; braking is now smooth as a hot knife slicing thru butter and the big bastard stops on a dime everytime.

That’s good to hear, You’ve got the slim big bastard too...hop into an all wheel drive GT aha:rofl:

I had the problem once, stomped on the brakes in the prescribed method a couple times, and it never bothered me again. Car's got 27k total miles. When it's time to replace the pads I'll do aftermarket.

I wouldn't let $250 in brake pads (which take all of 1hr to swap) stop me from getting an otherwise great car.

Be glad you're aware of the issue and can remedy it before the deposits frag your rotors and you're out another $300.

My fronts are still holding up after installing girodisc pads. Now yesterday I had a long highway drive and when hitting the exit ramp from highway speed (122kph) I could feel the rears vibrating...so ridiculous this wasnt flagged by KIA in the production phase. Now I have to deal with the rear pads/rotors.

I've put about 8000km on since I purchased and the pulsating happened about 4000 in. I did a few hard brakes on a long drive and it went away but has now returned. Going to wait for it to get real bad and have them replace all the rotors; I have visible and tactile warping on at least one side of all my rotors.
