Concerns - Popping/Creaking Noise from Sunroof

Took to my dealer who confirmed the issue is known to Kia and there is a service bulletin issued on it. Dont let your dealer tell you otherwise, i saw it.
What a great news! Cool, will see if that works with our Russian dealer...

> The solution was to remove the entire roof lining and apply silicon like a sewing machine all the way around.
Sounds terrifying tbh...

BTW, it will be VERY helpful if you will post any TSB numbers and screenshots of TSB bulletin if available!

Ok, mine also started to rattle and creak. I have now 13.000 km. Sometimes it feels like the noise might come from the tailgate?
Anyway, will try to record it and take the car to the dealer. Was hoping to not have this problem..

I will go to the dealer next week and see if I can obtain. Also I did see on this forum somewhere (or perhaps it was YouTube) a guy that had solved a tailgate rattle issue with washers slightly bigger than have been supplied on the two plastic lugs that lock down the tailgate on each side

Your a legend mate! Mine goes in on monday, would love to be able to quote the TSB to these guys!.

HI from OZ.
Hope I am not too late to assist.

I had this same sunroof noise here in Perth WA. Generally it was only when temperature was warmer ro when going over bumps. Took to my dealer who confirmed the issue is known to Kia and there is a service bulletin issued on it. Dont let your dealer tell you otherwise, i saw it.
Issue is lack of silicon above your roof lining around the sunroof. Where the special silicon, which has sound deadening qualities, is only placed at points about 6 to 8 inches apart, the places where there is no silicon flex and the car "creaks" when there is expansion and contraction or when you go over bumps. The solution was to remove the entire roof lining and apply silicon like a sewing machine all the way around. This is best done by the dealer. It was a fiddly, all day job done at no cost. It is a KNOWN problem. Was 100% fixed free of charge. Good Luck

Yeah I can also confirm that Kia have acknowledged it is a known problem and issued a TSB. Had my car in on Monday to assess various noises and rattles. It's now booked in for 2 days next week to have the roof liner removed and sunroof issue fixed.

Thanks to you guys for this info. Please update how it goes once the work is done and if you can get the TSB number. Mine needs to be done but it has gotten cold again here so it's not too noisy right now. Would be nice to book it with a TSB in hand. This fix feels a little less invasive than a full frame/rail replacement, if it works.

Hi everyone,

I started hearing rattling noises as if there are rocks stuck in my sunroof on my car at ~8,500km. I live in Ontario, Canada and it happened on one of the days where it became warm and really sunny (10 degrees celsius) where the previous day was probably around 0 degrees celsius and cloudy, so there was a noticeable change in temperature in between those two days.

Since then, I haven't heard that sound again which is really disappointing and the KIA dealership told me that they won't fix it unless they can replicate it. I haven't put any silicone lube, felt tape, or played with it at all just in case the dealership says that it was my alteration that caused the noises (dealerships are always sneaky with warranty claims).

Does anyone know of something I can do right now or should I simply wait until the sound comes back? I do hear creaking noises, but I'm not sure if that's an abnormal sound that would be covered under warranty.

Based on others' remediation (frame replacement, rail replacement, now silicone addition), I would suggest leaving this 100% to the dealer. I have run quite a few of my own diagnostics and simple fix attempts, none of which have yielded remediation. I feel it's more than likely that most of us with this issue will require invasive repairs which is best left to the dealer.

Hi, Johnny. Welcome to the forum. There should be ZERO sounds coming from anywhere but the tires, passing wind and the engine (oh, and the surround sound, of course).

my sunroof makes some noise, but when I close the shade it's completely silent. Are people hearing noises with the shade closed or just open?

In my case its both. Closing the shade just reduces the noise a bit.

My shade is always closed and my roof is always barking.

Really interested in the Australian TSBs for this. Would be awesome if they are used by Kia USA as well.

Mine is like this too, the shade closed reduces the noises but does not completely eliminate them.

Noise is always noticeable when I'm passing wind.

I just tested my sunroof creaking on a trip this weekend. Mine is definitely related to the rail at the front of the sunroof. If the shade is open, it creaks a lot. If the shade is closed, it is pretty much silent. If the roof is open even the tiniest amount, no creaking. To prove the point, with the roof closed and shade open (creaking scenario), I can simply stick a couple of fingers in the same slot where the shade goes and by applying a bit of upward pressure on the roof section, the creaking ceases.

Ergo, the problem is caused by the roof resting on the rail with inadequate cushioning or inadequate/worn/drying out gasket/seal. It makes sense that the Australian procedure described above should work. When are we going to discover the TSB # so we can confirm that we have to spend months whinging to KIA Canada and KIA USA to get them to deploy a fix some other KIA has already acknowledged and is dealing with?

Since I fixed the rear hatch rattle with the extra washers, the sunroof is the major annoyance in the car. I have some (so far relatively minor) door ticking, but can't focus on figuring-out how to isolate and get rid of it with the damned roof creaking all the time!

Hate to suggest this, but replacing the entire system is likely only a temporary fix as the new gasket will dry/contract over time and the original problem will recur. Unless they are now shipping with the equivalent of the Aussie procedure done to them, or, the dealer does that procedure as part of the installation of the new sunroof.

I have asked the service tech today for the TSB and he said he would get it for me from the foreman. Hopefully will post later but i'm not going to push too hard,as i have a great rapport with my service guys. These are the guys at the counter - not the actual Mechanics. What he did say was, yes it was definitely a service bulletin but it was from Kia Australia and he recalled it was specifically raised and discussed by the foreman at their weekly tool box meetings - that's how he knew it was known issue, as soon as I said the problem. I'm not sure therefore how you go overseas based on that. Will pursue later today if i haven't heard back from him. Fingers crossed

My door "Ticking" was eliminated with the new sunroof frame , it was a game changer for rigidity and audio sound !!

When you say the noise stops when the roof is open, do you mean the glass only tilted up, or the glass slid back a little bit? Mine is noisier with the glass tilted up but silent with it slid back.
