Carbon fiber steering wheel

I think anything not real CF wouldn't last long. CF imitation made with hydro dipping would wear out soon and if it was wrapped in cf look vinyl it would look cheap and got damaged soon, even more so if driver wears jewelry. At least this is my opinion.
Yes. If its not the real thing, better not do it.

This one is 1200 bucks (1.2M KRW)... ouch

Craftmanship is maybe better than the other one, but it is hard to tell from the picture.

Do you think it looks nicer than the one in the first post?

So far several people had this mod done (all custom orders but from different sources):

Which one is your favorite?

IF I was to have one made, I think I'd have it done by the guy that did the wheel #2 (leather work looks the best),
but I would order it red stitching and the red stripe at 12 a clock like #3. Also I'd have the bottom spoke at 6 a clock in carbon like #1.
For the area around the buttons at 3 and 9, I am not sure whether I'd do them in carbon like #4 or maybe piano black.

But I won't probably order one because its too much money for a steering wheel.:p

I still ike the first one as that one still has the indentation to stick the GT badge on the bottom. Can't see it on the last one.

Maybe it's just me but carbon fiber just looks cheap. Not a fan. I think of fake carbon fiber wraps on wannabe "Fast and Furious" Civics.

Yeah I'm with you. There's so much fake carbon fiber floating around that unless you're in a $300k supercar I just assume it's fake, which feels awful poser-y. The fact that these are real is awesome, but if it's just being added to the steering wheel then it's not saving any weight and kind of defeats the purpose, right? Are there any visible interior bits being made in carbon fiber that are straight replacements and save a little weight? Every little bit counts on a car this heavy.

If I did just have an affinity for checkered patterns then I'd go for the third photo because I like the center line at the top of the wheel but making the bottom-center spoke and button-surrounds CF seems like overkill. If you like tons of visible CF just swing by your local Pagani dealership and pick up a Huayra, right? ;)

Real carbon fiber looks nice and makes car look expensive, any kind of imitation looks cheap, either wrap, sticker or hydrodip. So for me real stuff or nothing.
CF was invented to make strong and lightweight parts for formula cars and later for others. Most tuners today don't add CF parts to reduce weight but more like because of it's looks and weight reduction is a positive side effect. Real weight savings are only with bigger parts replaced like hoods trunks and fenders, smaller parts don't have much impact on overall weight.
These cf steering wheels are just for looks, not for performance and not for weight reduction.

Even if they were for weight reduction
its maybe less weight reduction than lets say going to the restroom before driving.

I hear that muscle weighs more than fat. So the smart thing to do is never work out :)

Other than encouraging and supporting aftermarket suppliers, I am not a fan of the decorator CF. If it isn't real, what are you trying to accomplish besides POSING? And if you don't have enough CF in the car to save weight, well then that's just pathetic. Which is why the CF trim interior in the Genesis G80 Sport is a joke. 4700 lbs and CF on the dash? Really? Fake carbon fiber will go the way of billet aluminum everything in the 1980s. Nothing dates faster than a bad idea applied without restraint for no reason other than show. "My Stinger is worth $75K, and I have the Pep Boys receipts to prove it." Rant over.

I respect your opinion but why do you say it is fake?

Because the original poster said it was an overlay. That would be ADDING a little weight, lol. CF is a structural component used by performance and supercar companies to save weight. It is exposed as a by-product of the weight-saving/manufacturing process. As a decorative element the implication is you are attempting to add a racing component for show that is non- functional. It's not like a criminal act. Just my ornery, old fart opinion.

It does add a little weight, but how many grams are saved in cars like the Audi S/RS 1or the BMW M cars with their CF interior trims? Only the carbon used in the structure of the car (body panels, frame, etc) saves significant weight. The rest is only for esthetics, because many people like the sporty look of it. And while it is used as a decorative element, in the universe full of vynil wrapping, hydrographics, many will agree that this kind of application is one of the least "fake" ones. Of course, it doesnt save weight and even adds a little, but would it have saved any significant weight if the original trim was not left underneath? well, no. (just my two cents)
