I'm far too old to be messing around with kids with modded cars. My GT2 is bone-stock except for the badging. I live in a rural area where car savvy is rather limited, and where a few kids have late model Mustangs and Camaros, or tricked up "rice burners" with wheels worth more than their cars, and tomato cans for mufflers. And I also suspect that none of them have any idea what a Stinger is, other than "just another Kia."

Because the town is rather small and I know all the cops (I teach at the Police Academy at the local university), I don't burn rubber at stop lights or make a fool of myself in town.

But the Stinger is a Jeckle and Hyde car. Docile, comfortable and fun. But there is this little silver dial on the center console that beckons me from time to time and is always tempting me to just twist it one notch to the right and turn the AV screen from cool white to raging red. I can always resist the temptation when the wife is in the car, but the wife is away for a couple of days, and well, the weather is nice and I wanted to take a drive.

When you twist the little knob, the car gets hungry -- both the car and the driver. There is a stoplight outside of town that stops cars before allowing you to pull the ramp to the interstate -- two lanes for some reason only the civil engineers can explain, but it merges into one lane before merging onto the highway, a fairly steep uphill entry ramp. I'm calmly sitting at the light when a modded Chrysler 300 with tinted windows and ugly black wheels pulls up in the lane beside me, obviously intending to beat me to the merge point. Normally, I would let him go. But the wife is away and I will play. I twist the dial and wait for the light. He had a split second jump on the light (cheater) and lots of tire squealing, but you can't beat AWD on an uphill climb. Not even close. Had him by well over 2 car lengths at 90 mph and pulling away.

I drove a few miles down the interstate and the 300 blew by me going probably close to 100 as I had the cruise set for 75, minding my own business. Just before getting off the interstate, a Honda of some kind (too small for an Accord - never did know what it was) flew up behind me and tailgated me about 2 car lengths onto the 270° exit ramp. I held speed on the ramp with a very slight drift (yeah, the AWD will drift in Sport mode) and lost the Honda in the dust who conveniently turned off before admitting to his humiliation.

Perhaps I need a big strip of duct tape to put over that little knob. Or perhaps I just need to sell this beast and act my age. But I ain't gonna do it.....:D

I know what your talking about, which is why it’s better it starts off in comfort mode. Now when I go into sport I find myself turning the traction control off. Do need to find an open area to try the launch control out, love this car and that “knob”.

Be careful kiddies....the fuzz just love ya......with my yellow GT2, have been a good boy around town.....P1060611.webp

Good ole' MSSU. I used to stalk their parking lot looking for qualified applicants when I was on recruiting duty in Joplin.

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...
Great read, thanks!

I have a problem too, and it involves immediately turning that knob to the right when I start the car

Duct tape is your friend....

so if I ductape it to the right it will just automatically switch to sport when I turn the car on without having to manually do it genius!

Out of curiosity, OP, does your car have the summer only tires or the all seasons? I've had a heck of a time getting the rear end to step out, and my configuration is GT2/AWD with summer tires. Granted, I'm not at speed when trying yet (still getting acquainted with the lady), but it seems a lot less eager than the 2012 Camaro 2SS/RS I traded in. Just curious. Debating whether I should swap out my summers for all seasons close to November, and whether the handling will be "livelier," lol.

Yes, 19" Michelin Sport 4's. i did some training back in the day at Bondurant, and I was a deputy sheriff for 20 years with some high speed training as well, although that wasn't very sophisticated. You have to be careful of those 270 degree exits because if you don't know the pavement -- expansion joints, sand, etc. -- you can embarrass yourself or wrinkle your car. I had used that ramp many times and knew it will.

Was a great read... thanks you made me smile.:)

its the subtlety of how fast it creeps up on you. i also turn the know to sport upon start up. and, i have been pulled over for a slight increase of speed coming through the tunnel, remember my stinger is yellow, officer walks over to ask me how fast i am going. straight faced, said yes i was speeding. its late, im alone on the road and the car is screaming yellow, how can i not? i was lucky enough to get a warning, but the officer called several more just to eyeball the car. the mrs was not pleased. but i laughed my butt off at her displeasure. moral of the story, don't laugh. i can't drive the stinger for 2 weeks. damn, grown man and i got punished.

This thread is a sleeper. I read it many days ago and had no comment to add, then. Now I feel "inspired" to confess. Until the last few days, I always turn to Sport on startup. And I use the manual gate and paddle shifters to excess. (The last few days, I am experimenting with "Smart", automatic only and trying for gas mileage, just to see what I can get.)

I have yet to turn off the "traction". (That is the little "skid" icon to the far right, right?) I haven't pushed on or off ramp "cloverleafs" enough to risk a "drift" much less a skid. But the day is coming.

It is my understanding that if you do turn off "traction" and use Sport mode, the car acts a lot like RWD, with only 20% of power going to the front wheels. Am I right?

Is there a mode OTHER than sport mode? It matches my interior lighting so it is a natural choice.

I'm on your wife's side (we women need to stick together). I'm sure she's totally tickled by your giving her an excuse to keep the car to herself for a fortnight. :p
