• PLEASE! It is VERY important that this area is not used for the discussion of technical issues with your Stinger. This section is for posting about regional-specific things like Stinger clubs, events, local vendor or dealer recommendations, KiaStinger.com member sightings, etcetera... In other words, I do NOT want people to need to scour through several different sections to find answers about their heads up display. That's why there's a section dedicated specifically to discussions like that. THANK YOU!

Hi All,

Am I right in saying that only through the use of Apple Car Play can you use the messaging function of your phone through the cars infotainment system.

I dont seem to be able to read messages on screen through Bluetooth or Android Auto which is disappointing unless I am doing something wrong?

I read some where in the forum that you can’t do that.

You can only get that function if you connect phone via USB cable.

OK, so I have worked out that when my Samsung galaxy S8 is connected via USB cable and Android Auto enabled with GOOGLE ASSIST my infotainment system will read out incoming text messages to me and I can respond hands free which is great. I can also trigger GOOGLE ASSIST into action by pressing the voice command button on the steering wheel and ask for things such as creating a new text message or checking the weather etc, so not dissimilar to Siri functionality on an Apple device.

So to my next hurdle.......Is there any way to check / create email hands free as well as GOOGLE ASSIST cant do it.

Hmm, not sure if your Google assistant is not the same as here in the states. But I can say, "ok Google send an email to {name}" and it works.. I've not tried in Android auto though, maybe it is blocking it. Can you use the command when the phone is not plugged in to the car?

Thats a hell of a lot of phaffing about and negates the wireless charging. I have an iphone (work) and an S8 (not work). I hired a bog standard toyota corolla yesterday and even that shows the incoming sms on the poverty pack 4 inch screen. The "infotainment system" including the sub-woofers is the only thing (apart my my drivers seat issue) that I really don't like about the car. Hoping for a software upgrade.

I drove a Hyundai Tuscon a few months back with a basic head unit and with the Android phone plugged into the USB port AndroidAuto allowed you to dictate SMS and respond. I cannot image they would go backwards on a newer more premium model.

Corolla didnt need to be plugged in nor did it need AndroidAuto (what a piece of crap btw) to read incoming sms's out loud...

Hi all

Found this thread trying to work out if I was missing something on my new Stinger (GT-Line) where AndroidAuto only seems to work when plugged in via USB and not Bluetooth.

Is this an Australia-only issue and if so....why? Or am I doing something wrong (the phone App actually has the option to switch on when it detects the car via Bluetooth...so why doesn't it work the other way?)

Because Kia decided not to program android auto over Bluetooth into their head unit. To be fair it is a pretty new option to Android auto. Right now I believe there is only 2 aftermarket head units that support it.

Thanks for the info there - I was under the incorrect impression it had been around a little while. So it is an Australia-only thing though or is it something that is universal?

The issue for me is the cordless charging is a pretty cool feature and to have to plug the device in to actually use AndriodAuto kind-of removes that functionality. I guess my interim solution will be car GPS/Wireless charge on short trips and for the longer journeys plug it into the USB. Not ideal, but what can I do?

Software update please....
Agreed - just had a play around of usb connected vs bluetooth.... its practically useless being hooked up via usb on AndroidAuto unless you want to use Google Maps. All other Apps don't function correctly (if at all). Also, no on-screen messaging or any of that kind of functionality - its really disappointing.

It's worse than a standard toyota....$65k and you still have to pick up the phone. Cost me $400 and 4 points the other day. Android Auto is total crap on this thing.

Never had it before so did not miss it. If you have to send a txt wait til you’ve switched off and not driving. The Kia system is ok for me but I guess you lot are miffed because u spent so much on the car, I would too but it’s not an issue for me. Hopefully a software update will fix but you’re going to have to raise the issue strongly with Kia.

Impossible. It uses WiFi not just Bluetooth for wireless connections. The hardware is not there in the stinger head unit..

Did Kia really muff this up that bad? I have Android auto in my kids Jeep, and making calls, texting via voice, and all the other apps like Spotify work flawlessly. Can you guys all explain a little more what doesn't work?

Android Auto's not working well at all for me, either. I can hit the Spotify button all day on my 8" display and nothing will happen, for instance. I thought perhaps it was me since I'm on a Pixel2 and the latest Android out there. It's almost good to know I'm not alone. Put me in the queue for a software update!
