anyone using 5w40 instead of 5w30 on tuned cars ?

Personally I'm not going to use a lighter weight oil. If I was going to buy the signature series again I would go with 5w-50. But I have HFC/downpipe which has caused some oil consumption. Currently I'm using redline 5w-40 which cut down on my oil consumption. Your engine might like 0w-40

it was the 5w40 8100 series , ive been using the penzoil ultra platinum 5w40 all summer and the car seems to like it as well as the sp rating

Makes sense. I think I might move away from the Motul- now I need to decide between AmsOil Signature 5w30 or Redline 5w40. Do you have the same change intervals regardless or oil? That would help me decide as well.

All kinds of good oils out there. I change around 3.5k. That is where I have my reminder set. I used to have it set at 4k.

I've been using Castrol Edge 5w-30, its the only oil I have found that is ACEA A5/B5 certified (which is recommended per our owners manuals) AND also meets or exceeds SP/SN Plus SN/SM. That combination has been quite hard to find I must admit, OIL manufactures all like to put different certifications out there. I drive my car pretty hard, and I change my oil every 3500 miles, but I have never experienced any OIL loss between changes. Ive been extremely satisfied with this oil, and plan on continuing to use it now that I am JB4 Tuned as well.

ACEA A5/B5 rating is for fuel economy. My priority is protecting from engine wear not fuel economy. I would suggest a 5w-40 which will have a higher HTHS. Especially, since you're tuned.

i've been using the penzoil euro 5w30 since it's ACEA C3 rated and according to bitog, closest to the factory fill (total i think? don't remember and don't want to scroll through 10 pages on that forum.) very similar to the shell helix posted earlier also. I've been entertaining 10w30 since I live in a land where 60 degrees is a cold winter day, but haven't found a readily available C3 rated oil at that weight. It might be that spec automatically rules out a 10W base.

Unless engine temps were higher due to mods (and i do not think they are), you do not need a thicker oil. Running a thicker (higher number=resistance to flow) can only reduce performance and perhaps even slightly hinder the oil system (oil pump has to work harder to push thicker oil). So, I would stick with OEM recommendations.

It’s recommended by the lap3 rep to use 5w40 when tuning the stingers and especially with ecu & full exhaust/ or downpipes. Helps in reducing the amount of oil seeping. Next time I change the oil when it gets warmer I’m going with 5w40 as I have 5w30 right now.

It didn't occur to me that going from a 30 weight to a 30 weight would be enough to keep the turbo seals from leaking after reducing backpressure via downpipes.

Can either of you (or anyone else whose tried this) confirm that's the case? Does it eliminate smoke out the tailpipes, or just decrease the rate at which your oil level drops across an oil change interval?

According to the 2022 manual I have: 5w30 or 5W40 are both acceptable. 10w30 as well if the temperature doesn't drop below 0F (~-20C)

Kia Australia recommends Castrol 5W30 "A5" oil for 3.3l TT Stinger.

Castrol 5W30 "C3" is incompatible let alone changing to a 40 oil. As the numbers go up the oil gets cheaper

I used it without any issues. Oil analysis was ok. It's high in calcium which can increase the likelihood of low-speed pre-ignition. A better choice imo would be an oil that is API SP rated for added insurance.

Right now I'm using amsoil 10w40 in the summer months. I'll go back to a 5w in the colder months
