About Requirement for Premium Gas

Yes, I was asking you. Your example based on 4k per year was far below the norm. But, even at 12k or more the cost for prem. is not that bad.

Just for fun, at what price gap per US gallon do people think it might be worth going mid grade or regular?

As my decision to go with premium gas is all about taking the best possible care of the engine, I would not switch to mid or regular because of pricing disparity. I'd just drive less, I suppose, if premium (for some reason) was priced excessively high.

I cannot comprehend gas prices in the seven to eight dollars per gallon range. But Europeans have been paying that for years. And they drive a lot by all indications.

If I was very sensitive to cost of gas, I'd probably go with 2L engine rather than 3.3L.
Or I'd go with a much more fuel efficient vehicle.

I believe both engines are recommended to use prem. I don't think reg. or mid. damage the engine, just reduce performance. With all the computers built into these cars, I don't think we need to worry about pre-ignition any more. The 2L turbo is widely used by Hyundai, I believe with less HP and they recommend reg.

Just went out to check local gas pricing using the internet. I discovered this thread got off to an incorrect assumption, we were using $.10 and $.20 increase over reg. for mid. and prem. As it turns out gas in Ormond Beach, Florida is more like $.53 for mid and $.83 for prem. for a Shell station and $.40 and $.70 for a Sunoco station. Now, I'm getting back to thinking I may stay with mid. as a compromise. Would save $26.25 per month over reg. That's $315 per year. Still think I will split the difference and go with mid.

"Still think I will split the difference and go with mid."

I've got to wonder if the mid-grade is ever sold and if it sits stale in the station's tank. I had a recent conversation with several friends and we don't know anyone who uses the mid grade, and wonder why it is still manufactured. Your case would be the exception, IMO.

I used mid grade on my first to fill ups and it has all the power I will ever use or need.

Not a problem, as there is no such thing as refined mid-grade fuel - only regular and premium. The pumps mix it half and half when mid-grade is selected. :D

I posted a link to my local Shell station. Try using Gasbuddy for your local area to see if there is better pricing (less $ between 87 & 91). Here's a screen shot from my local shell station

Dayum Paul32, your gas is cheap! Both regular and premium is 50+ cents a gallon cheaper than here in LA. This is premium pricing:

So you can see at the Shell station if you want to use prem over reg it will cost you $.83 cents per gal. On a 14 gal fill up that would be $11.62. I would do that 2.5 times per month, maybe 3. I'm filling up about every 10 to 12 days.

Where did that information come from?
It's not generally advertised by the major gas companies, but ask at your local gas station how many storage tanks they have for gasoline (vs. diesel). You can also check the fuel tank fill caps set in the pavement - I believe premium is red, and regular is white. The mix doesn't have to be 50/50, as the pumps can be set for any blend (and resulting octane rating). Here regular is 87, premium is 91, and midgrade is 50/50 (89).

I'm not in the business so can't say that is the case everywhere, but I believe that is the normal process for supplying midgrade gas.

If that is true, it makes me feel better about using mid. range. Might get more than 89 oct.

Why not load the Gasbuddy app on your phone and go buy premium for your Stinger at the cheapest station in the area, currently Mobil @ $3.04? That's the benefit of Gasbuddy. Personally I would buy gas from any of the major companies (Shell, Exxon, Mobil, 76, etc.) , but avoid the "no-name" brands.

Paul32, if I may ask, which model Stinger do you have? I have GT2 AWD with the 3.3L motor.

Gas station I go to consistently charges 20 cents a gallon more for Premium (91) than regular (87). So we're talking ~$4 a fill up more... I use premium.

I pay 20 cents per litre more for premium. So yes, it adds up.

-just noticed this has already been mentioned. Hadn’t read all the comments.
