It's not an illegal practice just not what one would expect in this day and age. Guess this is one of the reason why they don't like Tesla's sales strategy, no bump sticker, just standard price.
I agree that dealers are allowed to set their own prices - market forces will hopefully keep them in check, and forums like this are a great resource to help in spreading information. It's not an illegal practice just not what one would expect in this day and age. I dont disagree at all on this. HOWEVER, it is up to the buyer to be informed and READ EVERYTHING. I cannot stress this enough. Not reading or understanding what you are signing or buying is no one else's fault but your own.I agree that dealers are allowed to set their own prices - market forces will hopefully keep them in check, and forums like this are a great resource to help in spreading information.
However, beside the way this was implemented being unethical and possibly against their dealer agreement with KIA, when it comes to 'hiding' the disclosure of where that upcharge originated I'd question the legality - many places have consumer protection laws for that.
Printing their own 'adjunct' label to tack on to the official KIA window stick so it looks like it was issued by KIA is one thing - I'd be interested to see how Kia felt about that. But putting a disclosure statement like that in very fine print, inside a section of the label that purposely provides no meaningful information other that to misdirect the reader as to content, to me is bordering on fraudulent practice.
Certainly no disagreement here, either - Caveat Emptor. However, IMO somebody should be holding these guys feet to the fire for their unethical, dishonest and deliberately misleading sales practices.I dont disagree at all on this. There is so much readily available info out there, there is no excuse for not knowing.
This may be specific to this dealer...not my experience at most dealers in AZ. I walked in with no trade, cash purchase, and some would not budge on the "markup"If you don't have a trade, they simply remove the markup, and will even come below MSRP to win your business.
Agreed, not certain if they have any small ones in AZ...where did you get yours? Mine was a Sunset Yellow so they "tried" to get the markup. In the end, i didnt pay it at got the car at invoice. Some dealers will always try to put markups on special edition cars.. others won't. In my experience, the smaller ones give the best overall experiences.
I actually spoke to the GM at the KIA Store East regarding the mark-up and his explanation went like this, "Our owner allows us to mark the car up because we can." That was all. The first time I went in there to try to buy a stinger (Sunset Yellow GT), which was at another one of their dealerships, they said they would sell me the car at MSRP and that was the best they could do, even though the car is invoiced for lower and on Autotrader there are Sunset Yellows marked below what they were selling it for. Their response to me when I showed them the lower prices and what invoice was on the car was, and I quote, "We have to keep the lights on." When I told them about the dealer-mark up at the E-town store, they said that store wasn't allowed to mark the vehicle up that much, but guess what, it still is.I had hoped by now you would've updated this post with the explanation I gave on your Instagram post... It's a markup but serves a very important purpose for the dealer and how they negotiate with banks. If you ever pay a dealer markup on a vehicle, you deserve it.
I have purchased a Cadenza, Sportage and Two Stingers from one of the stores in question, and each time the markup is explained by the sales team, and when the paperwork is all finished, it's gone. I paid significantly less for each of my vehicles(The stingers not as much as the Cadenza or Sportage because they're new... less wiggle room).
I will continue to buy from them, and encourage others to as well, but make sure to explain the "markup" that is on every vehicle on the lot before I send someone.
For those of you that don't know, they advertise the ability to give you "up to $10,000.00 more than your trade is worth on a new KIA", this "markup" allows them to offer you more for your trade so the bank doesn't see unusual fluctuations in numbers. When you're finished negotiating, and you had better be negotiating, you'll see the out the door price reflects this. If you don't have a trade, they simply remove the markup, and will even come below MSRP to win your business.
I paid $38,500 (~$40k msrp) on the dot for my Kia Stinger Premium RWD w/ Drivewise -- Should be closer to $40k after delivery, and had several accessories added at the dealer.
When I bought my Micro Blue GT2 AWD I paid $50,500 (~$53,415 msrp) on the nose and it too had additional dealer accessories like the seat back protection, all 3 cargo add-ons and paint protection. Mudflaps appear standard on all of their cars.
I can't vouch for E-Town, or Preston Highway, because I haven't purchased a car from either, but I will vouch for Kia Store East.
But to each their own.

Everyone is going to have a different experience with different dealerships. I simply posted my experience. Imagine if you went to that dealership on a Sunday, when no one was there to explain the mark-up to negotiate with banks, which was never explained to me by anyone at the dealership and only by you, a customer, what would you see? You would simply see what I posted...the MSRP, the dealer mark-up, and the "on sale" price for more than MSRP, am I correct?
All the kias in fla near wesley chapel same thing. But 2995, s8e some add on?Kia Store in Elizabethtown, KY currently has a Micro blue GT2 on the showroom floor with a final cost of $56,500 while the car has an MSRP of $52,500 for 1. mud flaps 2. scotch-guard 3. nitrogen in the tires and 4. pinstripes (which the car does not have). They also advertise a Sunset Yellow GT for $41,500 on the KIA site and on there own site, the internet price is also $41,500. When you go to the dealership, the MSRP sticker price is $41,500 with a final price on the car for $46,500 with the $4995 mark-up for the limited edition Sunset Yellow paint.
