Seriously, how OC are we going to be about this?

I'm going to be VERY OCD about the paint quality on a brand new car. Paint falling off down to the metal on the back of the car, top coat falling off of the doors, A-pillars, and hood is not 'every day wear and tear'. If it was something that I had caused then it's on me, but this isn't, it's a legit paint problem that Kia has acknowledged and is working on a fix for.

Maaco would definitely not be my 1st choice for a paint job, much less on this car. A 4 day paint job is impossible to have any type of quality work that this repair would take. My money is on touching up the spots that they see and calling it good. A full respray would involve at least a week of teardown and prep work.

I suppose for the US, there are only 400 of these so maybe that is an option. I would certainly entertain and bare metal redo as buyback of the car is not a good option for me

Gotcha, I see what your saying, and yes I do agree with the thin paint issues. I've got several friends who swear by their VWs and I've seen them argue the 'soft paint' problems on them for just as long. If I started noticing this type of stuff say 18-24 months after I got the car, and it was obvious chips then yeah I'm an idiot for not doing any type of paint protection and I eat the bill to fix it.

And my custom paint job is already on the car I drooled over the yellow since they showed the color right after the car was 1st publicly shown at the 2017 NAIAS in New York. Never been a fan of orange paint of any type, but that's just me. Does the SEMA Stinger look gorgeous? Absolutely! But it wouldn't be my cup o Crown for my personal vehicle, but to each his own.

They are taking the panels off the car. They are taking it down to bare metal. While there we found additional areas that were not seen before, and those areas will also be included, as well as the paint chipping from around the headlights. It will NOT be a four day job.

Again I trust my guy at the dealership, and after speaking with the body shop manager, I feel we are all on the same page. I guess we will see once I pick my car back up. I will definitely scrutinize the car before I sign anything.

I am now driving a base model 2017 Soul... I started missing my Stinger the moment I climbed into the loaner.

Again, I will keep you all posted on the outcome.

Good luck with the paint job! Glad to hear they are doing this the right way and not making it a quick in and out.

And you are a better person than me for accepting that Soul. I only had to leave mine for 48 hours, and they tried to give me a base model Nissan Sentra.......... I about lost my mind when they pulled that dinky rattle trap up to the door and handed me the keys, I laughed and asked them if they were kidding.... The manager of the dealership, not the body shop (he was ashamed of it), was able to 'find' a top trim Altima from their rental fleet for me to drive. That's better.

They definitely don't do Stingers as a rental car (Yes, I asked) but come on, at least try to get close, lol.

That's great to hear. Curious, what made them decide to go down to bare metal? What did they determine is wrong with the paint job?

This is the wild wild west right now. Any chance you can document process with photos? I'd like to see bare metal. This will be informative for all involved. Front and rear bumpers will be easier to replace than strip. Cheap plastic.

Counldnt agree more. Dont give me a *%$# Box for loaner when i bring in a flagship. I can understand not loaning another Stinger but no reason for a nicely equipped Optima not to be provided.

BMW is notorious for this. I bring in am M car and they give me a 318...always tell the guys...you wont upsell me on anything with this.

@Luminary - how are the fixing the headlight area peeling? Repaint or straight replace of the bumper??

Edit: i see that Jason agrees with the bumper...easier to replace then to repaint. Only potential issue is see there is this "has new bumper been painted better?"

Sounds like things are going down the right path. Best of luck. Can’t wait to see before and after. When my fuel pump was being replaced I had to drive a Soul. Felt like I sold my soul to drive a Soul. Only positive was I had to drive 500 miles for work so the miles never hit my Stinger lease!! Hahaha.

Honestly I did not care. I am going on vacation this week, and the Soul will be sitting in my garage while I am gone. So I did not see a point in trying to get a better loaner. They usually give me a nice Niro or an Optima as a loaner, but I think all of thier loaners were out with other customers.

Not to intrude on your comment. And I don't know about your market.. but here in Saudi Arabia the G70 and Stinger have identical prices. Both fully loaded 3.3 will come arround $47,700. (Without our New 5% VAT)

Hey everyone, I’m the guy in Australia that first detected and reported this paint issue back in October last year and have had mine receive a full bare metal respray.

I can tell you that it was initially proposed to much less but it became obvious as more chips appeared that the whole car had the problem and if we didn’t do it all in one go, it would be an ongoing saga for years.

They went back to bare metal to remove all of the dodgy etch primer and baked on base coat that caused the issues to begin with. They replaced my front and rear bumpers and my hood.

I’ve uploaded a copy of the job sheet I got when I picked it up.

I can say that I’m ecstatic with the quality of the new paint job and took it to get looked at independently after the reap

Haha well thank you. I was told to keep quiet and keep the outcome of my paint issues, quiet. When I came online and saw how many others had the same problem, I couldn’t just keep quiet. It’s not right.

I’m happy to help any Stinger owner who is going through the issue and needs help or advice. I’m happy to do whatever it takes to get every affected Stinger, fixed.

@Bren1979: Well, that seals it: you are top quality human material. To hell with "keep it quiet"! Kia will behave honorably in direct proportion to the risk of losing their reputation and this car's success. ALL paint issues will be corrected or to the degree they are not there will be hell to pay.
