I recently replaced the standard auto-dimming interior mirror with the optional Gentex unit that also incorporates the HomeLink Wireless Control System and magnetic compass. The only tools needed were a T20 Torx Driver to secure the mirror to the mounting plate, a "Nylon Panel Removal Tool" to gain access to the mount and wiring, and a 10 mm wrench to remove the battery negative cable. Electrically, the job was truly 'plug and play': the connector on the factory harness snaps into the new mirror housing just as it did on the original mirror.

Once installed I only had to hold my garage door opener key fob up to the mirror to program the HomeLink button. To calibrate the compass the Stinger had to be driven in a circle twice (under 5 mph, no 'drifting' please!) and then regional magnetic variation coded in (requiring only multiple pushes of a single button with a paper clip) in order to display direction in relation to True North.

The only surprise is that, despite all the electrons running around in this mirror, the three flush-mounted HomeLink buttons are unlit and do not benefit from any ambient illumination at night.

Thank you for posting this up, @Scorpio Redux! Where do you get the Gentex unit?

That's A pet peeves of mine on my mirror in my optima. When it's dark you cannot see which button is which. Impossible to find the right one with gloves on..

Maybe the next generation mirror will have 'Button Heaters'

I am looking to replace the mirror on my GT as well.. has anyone done this yet? If so, which mirror did you purchase?

Yes, no mirror button lights on this for the US model is just dumb...the CA version has them lit.

Does anyone have the CA part number? For those of us in the base GT without homelink, we would like to "upgrade" to the best one, preferably the lighted one.

Hi @Helo58, I mentioned this part number in another thread...
Home link Mirror Buttons - Do they light up?
Thanks for the link. Apparently, the KIA/Hyundai mirrors have not had backlit buttons in the US for years now. I found this out from a brief internet search where I found a lot KIA/Hyundai owners complaining about no lights on their buttons. I also found no reference to the Canadian part number you mentioned in the other post (85101G3200). Seems a lot of folks are upset about not having the backlit buttons when their previous cars did.

I wonder...if GENTEX makes the mirrors for many OEMs and most OEMs are 12V electrical systems, would it be possible to get pin-out information for a backlit mirror from another manufacturer and use it rather than the KIA part? It would require making a custom harness, but if you have to have the backlight, maybe "the juice is worth the squeeze."

Can someone post of picture of the GT1 or GT2 rearview mirror?

Thanks. Would you be able to tell us the model number on the back side? This does not look like the one suggested for the OEM product as it only has 3 buttons on the front.

Yeah, ill see if i can find a model number this evening...

Mine has the homelink with integrated compass...the other two buttons (far right)(not the garage buttons) power the auto dimming and compass display respectively.

I wonder if the 5 button model will work? I like the look much better than the 3 button ...

I would hope the wiring harness (plug) is the same, but stranger things have happened. It looks like the 5 button mirror can be found in the Sorento if anyone has a Stinger and Sorento...
