Wireless Android Auto from Motorola

If anyone has been pondering buying the Motorola MA1 Wireless Android Auto device, it's currently on sale at Best Buy and Target online for $69.99. Looks like you can also use the same day "Pickup at store" option with both of them as well.

Picked one up yesterday from BB, saved another $14 BC I had a 3yr old gift card. I haven’t hooked it up yet, so I don’t know what that looks like, but I was not spending $100 + tax for one of these…I still almost did not buy it. I’ll report back in a couple days after its hooked up with an opinion.

Been running my MA1 for quite a while now, no changes to report. It's a solid device/does what I want from it. $69 is a good price considering the functionality it expands. I was happy with it at $89

Also ordered this model for my 2018 GT and it worked on the spot, not problem to notice except a slight delay on the phone sound connection during a call, otherwise RAS.
I tried the Carlinkit AI Box Plus before and it never connected to the car, i returned it after 3 days of try and the price was double the Motorola.

same, i don't even think about it ...

one of the best things i've done to the car aside from the auto stop/start resistor.

I bought this unit at Target for $89 bucks. Beware of Amazon sellers, huge markup. I used it in my 18 and it worked great. Now using in my 23 and I have to say it is hands down huge improvement.. Nice not to have your phone plugged in to use it. Now I can pay with the phone at a drive thru and not hook and unhook it. Music and calls are zero lag.

I bought the MA1 unit a couple days ago and used it on a road trip this weekend. Very happy thus far.

I bought it because no matter what USB cord I previously used, my phone would often disconnect from wired Android Auto, especially if something cause my phone to move. It even happened when my phone was perfectly still in the car. It got really annoying. I was hoping the issue would be rectified by this wireless system and so far the issue is gone. Drove about 7 total hours with no disconnects.

I still plugged my phone in to the 12v charger occasionally to keep its battery from draining.

I much prefer Google Maps and Waze over Kia's stock navigation system so this is a huge plus for me as well. Much thanks to all the recommendations here.

From my experience, they do not last long as I have to RMA it every 6 months

Yeah I did see your prior posts when reading over this thread. Hopefully won't run into those issues!

So I had been randomly reading other forums where wireless Android Auto and Apple Car Play dongles were brought up.

Apparently some of these devices can drain your car battery if plugged in when the car is turned off. Any of you ever heard that before or observed it with the Stinger? I don't believe the Stinger powers the USB outlet when the car is turned off but frankly I never tested it. Anyone know offhand?

Although I very rarely use AA, I found that it does the same exact thing to me.

On my '19 Stinger, that USB port stay ON, so yes the dongle will be powered even when the car is turned off.

That said, since I have more than 1 car, the Stinger sometimes go several days without being driven. I've also been on 2-3wk long trips and left the dongle plugged in. Yeah, I probably should've unplugged it, if it's that long. However, if your battery is in good condition, then that little bit of parasitic drain should not kill it when left plugged in for a few days.

IMO, it's more important you load test your battery periodically to make sure it's healthy.

i could be wrong, but on my '22 either the USB port powers down after a few minutes, or the Motorola does. my phone will continue to display the AA connection for a little bit after i shut the car off and get in the house, and then it turns off. i also noticed with the car off, if i open a door, the Motorola either "wakes up" or is powered on, because the AA connection starts on my phone.

the MA1 is on sale at W00t for $79.99, BTW ...

Same with my '21, the usb port only stays powered on for a couple minutes after exiting the car then powers off/the MA1 'disappears'.

Okay, I did a little more testing and found out the USB port on my '19 will power ON as soon as the door is opened. This is what tricked me into thinking the port is always powered ON, every time I get in the car. If you do not turn on the ignition and/or open the door again, the USB port power will turn off after about 200sec (bit more than 3min).

Anyhow, the Motorola MA1 current draws fluctuates between 0.14-0.20A @5V (.75-1.0w) according to my USB power meter. Assuming there are no other parasitic drain (which I'm sure there are) if the MA1 stay ON constantly, it will drain about 1/2 of the typical H8 AGM's 95Ah capacity in some 600hrs (25days). Since the USB port does time out, I really wouldn't worry about it. I leave mine plugged in.

Awesome, thanks everyone! I'll continue to leave mine plugged in.

Mine has been in constant use since I bought it last Aug. Car interior in Houston Summer is not kind to anything... electronics, living beings, etc.

Hey there. I was wondering if this is still the case? I have gone through tons of USB cables trying to find one that won't disconnect randomly. I assumed the MA1 would disconnect as well. Have you had disconnects with the MA1?

Thanks

Or anyone else who is using the MA1. Does this help with the USB disconnect/reconnect issues?

Thanks
