Spark Plug Issue

Literally just happened tonight. Coil was replaced on Tuesday. Car started sputtering again Thursday. Service checked plugs no issues. Drove car tonight, sputtered bad now CEL is on. I have noticed 0-60 the car is fine. It's more going from 15-20 mph then hitting it hard to get to 60-80 mph is where I feel the issue

I wonder what the code is from the light. Haven't ran into that problem yet.

They replaced coil but same thing happened again. If I'm reading this thread correct, I need to buy HKS spark plugs so my Stinger runs correctly? This is the 7th time I'm going back to service in the past month. I probably should just start the buyback process

Incorrect, the upgraded plugs are only recommended if the car is chipped.

It's going back to service tomorrow, I can see what my tech says. I'm GSM at a Kia dealer so it's not the end of the world bringing it in to service. Just frustrating

Has your dealership started a claim yet? I am surprised Kia hasn’t contacted you to work something out.

Cold air intake is the only thing I put on this car

Over at NASIOC, they often say that a cold air intake alters the way air flows past the air-flow sensor, thereby deceiving it. As a result AFR's may not be regulated correctly, resulting in an engine running too rich or too lean; if an engine runs too lean, detonation may result. Therefore, it is often advised that a cold air intake should never be used without re-calibrating or re-tuning the ECU.

Sounds like dealer crap to me. It’s a closed loop system. The oxygen sensor would show it was lean and the fuel map would be updated. Same thing happens when a dirty air filter is replaced with a new one.

Simple physics here: if the shape/size is different from original MAF surroundings than a different volume of air can pass by the sensor...the sensor/CPU should be calibrated for the stock housing to measure air volume (the actual sensor only senses one spot in the intake housing). A good aftermarket cold air intake will replicate measurements similar to stock to avoid a difference.

Your cars CPU will try to rebalance air fuel based on exiting O2, however, there are limits to how much adjustment can be done there. It is plausible that a mismatched intake could cause detonation (IMO)

A tune should only be needed in situations where the aftermarket parts is not a direct replacement for stock (poorly designed or meant to be larger for significantly more power where a tune would be needed anyway)

I wouldnt run the HKS plugs on a stock motor. No, you may have a lemon then

Why in the world not?

Who's cold air intake? K&N? I'm getting that hopefully end of next week. I thought K&N says no tune needed. I could be wrong.

You don’t need a tune for an intake.
I didn't think this car we did. Some cars you do need a tune. My 2016 STI needed a tune for intake or it would not run properly because of the increased airflow. Now all the intakes for that car did say you must tune the engine. K&N says install and drive so yeah I think it's good.

Just putting my two cents in here I’m a kia tech I’ve had one gt2 come in unchipped with a cracked plug. Kia engineers are aware of the concern and I was told by them to replace all plugs and all coils even though I only had one bad plug on cylinder 6. No info about about a future recall or not but I bet they will release something with the amount of concerns there are

And to those that are having this issue be patient no stock in the country on coils they have been put on back order which usually means kia is changing something around with them

And for everyone going and buying the hks plugs buyer beware we’ve had multiple vehicles ranging in different models that those plugs have come apart in cylinder and destroy motors
