Concerns - Popping/Creaking Noise from Sunroof

What actually have you done?

Did the loosen and tightening of the frame bolts and added the tape on the rails. I tried putting the sunroof in the same position it was at before. Not sure how many adjustments I should be doing to get it right. From the factory the sunroof was floating from the rails. When I loosed the inside bolts the sunroof dropped significantly.

It shouldn't have dropped I believe. Now something else is touching I guess that's why it's rattling

Yeah it drops a ton. It’s easy to tell because of where the marks from the bolts present itself. I’ll have to do some adjustments later and see if it relieves it self.

Can’t fault the fixes if you don’t eliminate all of your variables. Yes, you need to realign the glass panel as close as possible to the factory alignment. Otherwise, how do you know you’ve addressed your initial issue(s) and not created more?

What product did you use between the rails? Did you put anything between the flanges where the 4 bolts slide through? Did you mess with anything else beyond the recommendations?

I feel like I need something a little thicker. What have you seen or have done for the flanges? I’ve only done the two recommendations as of now, the frame bolts to adjust themselves when opening and closing the sunroof and the material on the rails.

I didn’t put anything between the flanges due to the tight tolerance there. I’m sure your car is the same, but, you probably saw how the flanges rub against each other just from shifting the roof up and down with the bolts loosened. I guess it’s possible since that is a metal on metal area there could be noise generated from those rubbing against each other, but, that wasn’t an issue for me.

The tape should be thick enough. It’s really about getting a different material between the 2 metal surfaces so they don’t interact. That’s why the shelf liner Marc used works. You could probably layer another strip of the felt tape on the existing one if you wanted.

I know how thick the shelf liner is and that kind of thickness would be much better. I found another tape that I’m going to try. You’re right about the adjustment. I’m going to give it a few days until I get some really good sunlight. It was kind of dim outside today so I might’ve missed the mark a bit. I think after I set the alignment right I’ll reset the frame screws again.

ok and ....I tried the same tape. It does not really stick to anything do we superglue it on the rails or ?

You may need to clean the rail first. IIRC, I used alcohol wipes to clean them. I had no issues getting it to stick.

So I figured out where sound was coming from. It was never my headliner or sunroof smh. It was my passenger seat! The more I kept hearing the sound the more my ears started to pin point the area. I remember having my body shop guy with me to try to hear the sound and of course the sound went away when he was sitting in my car which raised an eye brow. Today I was able to really hear where it was coming from and it was the seat. I gave the seat a couple good whacks, heard the sound. Now I don’t hear it anymore. I have an appointment with the dealer but now Im not sure I should even bother lol. I appointment was for a possible headliner ratter anyways. I will call them to touch base so they know what I’m experiencing.

Ugh lol. I’m definitely going to the dealership if I get the sound again. I get the car back today so I’ll keep you updated. Took days for me to pinpoint the sound.

I just got my car back. Sound came back but I know for a fact now it’s the upper section. I would lightly tap the lower section right where the tailbone would be and hear the sound. Then I pushed in the section where the lower part of your back would be on the upper seat and that seemed to stop the sound.

My sunroof is a bit loose. Tried out few things as suggested here. Seems my main rattle is due to the net's frame rubbing against the points on the sunroof that keep it pressed down. Used some anti-squeak tape from a car audio shop on top of the whole frame as well as few other points that have plastic to plastic/metal contact. Will test it when I get the chance, fingers crossed.

Yeah you need to out that tape everywhere plus use some silicone grease or something on rubber parts

Did the felt tape stop the noise/rattle??

Yeah it did, but, sadly, there are more rattles in the back of the glass panel. The search continues...

I'm hearing a seeming increase in rattles and whatnot. From the dash, from the sunroof (sometimes), most likely from the hatch area (from a recent auto body repair).
The dash rattle is subtle.
The sunroof rattle seems to be less or nonexistent with the shade closed, so it makes me think it might have something to do with that.
The hatch area rattle is probably a loose clip or something that the auto body guy left improperly addressed.

It's not much, but it's enough to almost make you wish for a nuclear winter.

i had a look myself at this. removed the glass too. I founf the most rattling is coming from the parts that slide into each other. Isolate this and it will be mostly gone.
