Why we can't have nice things

Not sure if it'll work or not, but see if the county/locality will pay for the repairs since you have video proof it was one of their signs that caused the damage. I'm pretty sure at least where I am (at least with pothole damage) you can get the state/county to pay for it.

Vegas is generally really tough to pursue these things. I'm going to see if the scratch rubs out. The side mirror damage isn't very noticeable, and I should be able to use a blow drier on the Xpel covered headlamp enough to at least not have the scratch in the Xpel as noticeable (it does self-heal a bit, I've done it before even though gashes like this won't 'melt' / fully mend).

I'm expecting these things with this car, in this City. That's one reason I'd never pursue ever owning anything 'nicer'. Random shit like this can be expensive if driving a vehicle worthy of constant pampering and upkeep. This is my sweet beater.

Worse case this should fall under comprehensive for $100 deductible if I wanted to go through my insurance. THEY can deal with the city/bureaucracy.

Side mirror was miraculously mostly paint rub, and came off. Xpel tear has been heated and is at least not a weak point, but looks ugly AF. The scratch on the fender shouldn't take much to repair. Looks like I dodged a bullet, but really only because I'm reasonably skilled with these repairs and don't require perfection.

Looked way worse than it did. Not sure what that pole was made of, doesn't seem metal (thankfully) Glad to know some of the things are sorted.

Mostly impressed how quiet you were when it occured.

Missed it by this " " much........
Yeah, it seemingly came out of nowhere, the video captured the perspective well. Because it was horizontal at nearly the same angle as the roadway, it blended in real well. That, and it's definitely not something I've ever had to look out for. Still not sure how else I could have avoided that, I was making a right hand turn a few feet after so I had to be in the lane no matter what.

Fwiw, my last second maneuver likely saved me a definite insurance claim. Had that hit further middle it would have scraped up a bunch of painted surfaces (front, hood, possibly roof).

I've had several of these "oh well" situations over the years. I've learned to enjoy the 'new' car while I can, knowing that it's not going to last forever. Resigned to the inevitability.

Holy, crap. When the object has your name and number on it, what can you do except clean up the mess. Running over a piece of sawed concrete cost me a front tire (it was paid for by the road crew company) and a straightened rear wheel (I ate that one). That is one freak accident you had. :alien:

BIG update.

Per your suggestion and my inability to repair the scratch sufficiently myself, I contacted the City in a hail mary move. They immediately got back to me, put me in contact with the paving company doing the roadwork, and a rep from the paving company has already been out to take pics. They *seem* to be taking full responsibility, and per the rep only because of the dashcam video which was in their eyes conclusive evidence. I've got a quote for $150 to replace the xPel. I'm starting to look for someone to fill the scratch with clearcoat on the cheap, it's super narrow and deep and outside of my moderate patching abilities.

FINAL update.

I got the Xpel on the headlamp replaced, there's a small 3 inch scratch under it but minor blem considering the impact. The scratch on the fender I carefully put some clearcoat in and called it a day. It's noticeable but the cost/inconvenience getting it repaired outweighs my need to fix it.

Now for the good part of the update, I sent the paving company a completed incident form they provided me and also a letter that basically demanded the out of pocket costs for the Xpel, clear coat touchup paint, and $500 for diminished value in lieu of me getting full/proper repair estimates to get the headlamp and fender professionally repaired. The key IMO was giving them 30 days to reply with an answer before I would go to small claims. Leaving timelines open ended is a recipe for disaster. The tone of the letter was direct and specific.

They promptly emailed saying they agreed to the terms (about $596), to get the attached waiver and terms notarized. Sent this back certified mail and got my check 3 weeks later. They save money, I save inconvenience. IMO I did fine with this outcome.

Figure it might be helpful to someone out there how to handle things. Most might have caved or gone through their insurance, etc. A little "f%&@ around, find out" never hurts. And, AGAIN, the dashcam made all the difference here. I had everything I needed to get whatever outcome I wanted from this situation because of it. And ONLY because of it. If you don't have one, get one. If you drive like an ahole and don't want one for that reason, stop driving like an ahole and get one.
