Greetings Stingerians,

I just got quoted a over $1500 by the stealership to have my brakes pads changed.

I did a little research here and found that people have also used

GIRODISC MAGIC BRAKE PADS - FRONT KIA STINGER - OEM BREMBO

-and-

These pads are much less expensive. Is there a catch? Does anyone have anything to share about using these pads?

Can anyone recommend any good rotors (back and front) to go with these? I have a 19” wheel.

Thanks in advance for any information surrounding these products. Its just with the price difference a quality question is begging to be asked.

"Stealership" is right! Basturds. Centric are not some sort of "catch", they are the real deal. I don't know if they are as popular as other aftermarket pads; others will have to chime in with opinions and experience.

I have the OEM pads and rotors and over 42K miles without the first hint of brake problems. So, the OEM setup is good, if it isn't bad. Hah. If you get pad deposits on the OEM rotors, Kia will resurface them under warranty (within 12K miles, or more if they perform a "good will gesture"). At that point, get aftermarket pads on pronto and bed them in properly. :D

My goodness, I just replaced all four brake pads myself with aftermarket R1 Concept Optimum OEp for $127. My current rotors only have less than 9,000 miles on them so didn't need to change those out. I think it would have only cost me another $300 for all new R1 Concept rotors. So dealership is charging around $1,000 just for labor.

I don't want to be "that guy" but how do you know when you need to replace the rotors?

Steering wheel vibrating.

can't that be from the break deposits also tho? is there a way in which I can look at it and be like damn that's thin?

If after rebedding, still issues. And if after attempting to turn them…

Then you replace.

unless you want a nifty upgraded rotor. Then just do rotor and pads at same time.

not sure what you mean by turning them! but def will look it up ;). I've seen some pretty done rotors with holes in them.

Rotors can be turned on a lathe removing peaks/valleys/grooves.

most rotors I’ve had in the past can get 2-3 turns on them. Basically makes em new.

of course, not at sexy as new two piece drilled/slotted rotors for making grocery runs.

since 99% of the people here do NOT track their cars or remotely push their stock pads/rotors to their performance limits day to day.

"Turning" rotors means having a machine shop put them on a lathe to grind down the surface of the rotors to give a new flat even surface. Since the lathe "turns" the rotors while a grinding wheel cuts off the metal, this became the term to use, been that way for decades.

At some point, you can't turn them anymore because the rotor gets too thin, so it is not structurally sound anymore, and doesn't have the thermal capacity to prevent brake fade.

Drilled/slotted rotors are so fancy.

Anyway, back to the OP's question, $1500 is highway robbery. The Brembo style pads are so easy to change, you don't even need to remove the caliper.

VERY MUCH APPRECIATED!! thanks, fellow bees

I put Stoptech pads on my Stinger. No issues other than a little noisy under certain conditions. I have always equated higher performance pads with noise though, even my SVT Mustang Cobra with Hawk pads was pretty noisy. Doesn't bother me though.

Exactly. Especially when you brake. I looked into getting them resurfaced by a trusted, local mechanic, of whom told me that, though he has the machine to do it, he doesn’t recommend resurfacing. He says that 89% of the time all it does is lead to broken and squeaky rotors. Better to buy new.

So I wound up finding a good deal on a Front and Rear set of Brembo rotors. I also found a great deal for a Front and Rear set of the stock OEM pads. All for about half of what the dealership wanted to sells the same parts to me for. :p:thumbup:;)

Ewww oem pads. Expect to have shuddering again soon. Promise!
