Downpipes vs. Full Exhaust

Camaro is naturally aspirated.
I heard it is much harder to avoid drone with the stinger's (twin) turbo charged engine.

That's news to me. I've never heard anything about forced induction increasing the odds of having drone. And I don't understand why FI would make a difference.

Regardless, if car companies can produce 700+ hp turbo/supercharged cars with no exhaust drone (think of all the Chevys, Fords, Dodges, exotics using FI to make hundreds more HP than our cars that have no drone issues) I see no reason why anyone should write drone off as an expected side-effect of having a performance exhaust.

Drone isn't caused by having a high performance exhaust. It's caused by having a poorly designed exhaust.

Yes I don't know what logic there is behind this statement. I just heard that.
I hope I am wrong and it is just that current products that are poorly engineered!

I haven't seen any complaints of drone from the aftermarket setups yet. Hopefully it stays that way.

Unfortunately, you have to test drive cars with the exhausts if you want to be sure.

Yea that sucks. Too bad Walmart doesn't sell them. We could just return it I'd we didn't like it.

I just heard that.

This is the biggest issue with first model year cars. There are a lot of people who think they know what they are talking about and say things. Then people start to repeat them because “they have heard”.

My last 4 cars have been first model years, happens every time until people really start to understand the cars in 6-12 months.

The Stinger has been out for almost 8 months where I live and I'm just saying what most tuners say here about the exhausts and the drone, just to give some input.
I'm really looking forward to your drone-less aftermarket exhaust purchase feedback.

Most of aftermarket exhausts have cabin drone as a side effect and how much they have depends on every car and engine and how exhaust is designed. Those cars that have 700hp stock also have exhaust to muffle the sound so there is no drone but this also means some of power is lost. Having performance exhaust is all about getting more power and sound. So if you put performance exhaust on 700hp car it will be louder than stock and possibly have drone.
You always have to keep in mind every car is made for average user meaning exhaust is not to loud, suspension not to hard, wheels not to big and no flush fitment etc. Exceptions are some high end luxury cars but majority of cars is made for people who won't modify them and if somebody wants to modify it then problems like cabin drone, tires rubbing can happen.

In short car modification also have unwanted side effects some people aren't comfortable with. Every story has two sides.

i've had high horse power cars with no drone. it all depends on the setup, how well it was installed and the kind of sound deadening the car has.

It all really depends on the exhaust, if you do straight pipes it will be hard to get rid of the drone. If you have a well designed resonator in place you should not have the drone. That is really the whole point of the resonator.

Agreed.

Buyers, don't let anyone convince you that drone is a necessary evil with an aftermarket exhaust. It can be engineered away.

With EVC, there shouldn’t be drone with it closed, right?

Maybe, maybe not. All the evc does is make the entire exhaust quieter. If the exhaust is not designed well, it could still drone, just less loud than it would without the evc.

Expanding on this, drone is not related to how loud an exhaust system is.

This is a good explanation of what drone is.
All you need to know about exhaust "drone"

Drone is a result of a poorly designed exhaust whether it’s straight through and really loud or fully muffled and quiet.

I just took a look at the description for the Ark Grip exhaust and see it's 2.5". Are there 3" aftermarket exhausts or are they all 2.5"?
