3.3TT Mishimoto's Stinger GT Intercooler Kit R&D Thread

Ok, time to share some thoughts. I installed everything yesterday. I am a novice so I had to follow along with the Mishimoto install guide (video) very closely. I would say it took me 6-7 hours total minus the hiccup with the WMI bung which I will detail below.

First off the install video from Mishimoto is fantastic. I never felt lost or unsure of what to do. The packaging was fantastic. None of the parts were damaged except for a slight bend in the mounting bracket of the charge pipe which was easily fixed. The intercooler finish was perfect with no damage at all. All the parts seem high quality. The fit and finish was nearly perfect.

The install it self is pretty straight forward but time consuming, just a lot of steps. I like to take my time to ensure its done correctly the first time. I will say having another person to install the intercooler would be helpful. Its a bit awkward to handle and the fitment is VERY tight. If you are running Injen intakes the charge pipe will fit but its pretty freaking close.

Now for my only complaints. I made an assumption that the WMI bung on the charge pipe the would be pre-tapped for 1/8 NPT which seems to be the standard for injection nozzles. Well to my surprise it was not. You basically get a solid bung welded in and you will need to drill the hole and tap it your self. Lucky for me my Dad lives close and has a shop with all the tools. You will need a 11/32 sized hole (we started small and worked our way up) and a 1/8 NPT tap for the threads. It took us about an hour to drill and tap the hole which came out perfect. This leads me to my second complaint about the WMI bung. Its angled in a weird way. In the install video the bung opening is facing 9oclock on the charge pipe but on mine its facing more like 10:30ish no matter how I tried to move it around. The problem is if your not running a lower profile or angled type nozzle you may hit the heat shield on the hood. Mine is just barely touching so I think I will switch to a 90 degree angled nozzle holder for more clearance. Just something to keep in mind if your running WMI. I wonder if something changed in the manufacturing process?

I can't say a lot about the actual cooling performance yet since I just installed it. I will note on my test drive last night a made a 30mph-140mph highway pull and I hit IAT of 48F, that was 15 degrees below the outside ambient air temperature. I've never seen a IAT that low on my car.

Overall I am very happy with the entire kit. I would rate it 9/10 and would recommend it.

Edit: A couple things I forgot to mention. If you have Injen intakes you can do the whole install without taking out your intakes. Also I put the front of the car on jack stands and had more than enough room to do the install.

Have you noticed any difference in spool time or throttle response in general?

None that I can tell. Car feels the same to me (in a good way). I have noticed on my JB4 logs a slight drop in peak boost, maybe between .5 - 1lb of total boost loss. My understanding is that is an expected result with this kit. I will be do 1/4 times soon with Dragy to see how this kit helps with my times.

Please check how is Boost2 vs Boost (the difference) compared to before the FMIC.

With the Wagner 3" charge pipe I saw a 0.7psi drop. Everyone I asked said they didn't notice it on their cars, then I look at their logs myself and there it is, same drop. Disappears when reverting to stock 2.4" CP.

Also noticed any throttle closure? With the Wagner CP I seemed to hit some kind of air flow limiter, throttle closed at some shifts during WOT.

Zero throttle closure.

Do you think this is a good kind of drop in boost? More lbs/min because of better flow but less static pressure?

That's my assumption. The Mishimoto engineering blog specifically states better flow with only 1.5 (average) loss of pressure in their testing.

I wonder what is the pressure drop for other products in the market.

Will need to add a couple of points to the FF on the JB4

Has anyone with a JT intake had a chance to test fit this yet?

I should receive mine next Monday or Tuesday.
If anyone hasn't done it yet, I will post pictures.
(I may also do a before/after dyno vs. Wagner FMIC, if I have time)

Sounds good. Here's hoping that it fits!
