3.3TT DIY intakes w/Heat shielding drop about 0.2sec off 0-60

I'm a complete car newb here guys so I apologize for the question. The 'professional' intakes like Injen, have another smaller tube connection in the elbow, whereas with the DIY intake set up, the elbow you can purchase on Amazon doesn't have the extra, smaller connection. What's that for? Is it on a different part that you aren't replacing with the DIY set up? Thanks for any and all help.

The intake "kits" replace the piping that comes off the turbos with a aluminum pipe and they have a nipple on them to connect that smaller diverter hose. The DIY one keeps the stock rubber tubing and the diverter hose is connected to it so you don't have to mess with it.

Thank you so much! I appreciate the help!

I opted for K&N filters with the little water socks on 'em. The sound is fantastic! This + snorkels is a great intake upgrade

Sorry for the dirty bay XD Some of the dirt roads around here kick up a TON of dust

40 mins later... et voilà !!
Finding the angle to have the cones rested was probably the longest part of the diy.
No heat shield as of yet , price is still $43cnd each !
I only did two laps with the car, nice pshhhh , sometimes subtle , sometimes not.
I did open the hood afterwards and it was hot in there, definitely will need some heat shield or bigger airflow coming in.
Position of the cones could have been in any position, as the connector from flex pipe make the 90 elbow be in any places.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this tread!!
Did you use any bracket or tap to hold the filters where they are?

Newb here. I'm doing the DIY method with just an elbow and a filter, do I need to put a bracket or tape to hold the filters in place?

Also, do you recommend putting heat barrier wrap on any part around the engine like @StungBlueGT2 did?

Outlaw you will love this mod...twist the cones downward right at airbox input...look at my post...use some sticky emblem tape to stick pipe to bracing and at front of cone to airbox...no brackets needed...Wash

I use heavy duty zip ties to secure the elbow to the cross braces. It works really well and if you want to swap in the stock air boxes it's a couple snips and you're good to go.

TBH, with the head shield, there is pretty much only one way everything fits, and when it does, you dont need a bracket, that heatshield will hold it all in place (face it down)

Figure I'd give it a try. Works well on a G70. Spent $170 for parts on Amazon. Could have been closer to $130 but I wanted to go with the AEM Dryflow filters instead of the Spectre filters. Hate having to oil air filters. Haven't tested it out yet but everyone seems to have a good experience with the DIY intakes. Forum won't let me post links. I attached a pic of the heat shields I used.

I added heat shields to my Spectre filters today. These are Spectre 8130 heat shields to go with the 8130 series filters. $20 CAD each on Amazon. They slip under the hose clamp that holds the filter to the pipe and fit really well.

The passenger side shield fits with lots of space but the drivers side is a lot tighter. I had to trim the corner of the shield on the fender side with some metal shears in order to get it to sit where I wanted it so that it won't rub on anything.

Overall though these fit great and should help with heat soak. They should also help pull in more cold air especially with the Big Mouth snorkels.

Did you get the gray or silver Big Mouth snorkels? Yours look close to the Ceramic Silver color of the car which is what I have and I wanted them to look pretty close.

Grey and they match really well. FYI there is a guy on the Facebook Stinger Owner's Classifieds group that makes a 3d printed version that is way cheaper than Velossa Tech. You might want to check those out.

Anyone thought of wrapping their airbox with the Aluminized Heat Barrier if installing just a drop in filter?

The air box itself should act as a decent heat shield. Couldn't hurt though. Once you put some air filters on like in this post though, you won't go back. The sound is incredible.

This seems so shockingly cheap/simple we might as well try! As a fan of dry filters over oiled, had a fitment question for those who have already toyed with sizing. The AEM 21-203DK is $52 and the 21-2036DK is $31. Without making the obvious "how much difference could an extra 1.375" make?" joke, that's a big price difference.

Would anybody know if the 2036 has clearance issues?
