Interesting Discoveries Thread (Good or Bad)

woah woah woah... i don't need that type of negativity in my life
Sorry. I just couldn’t figure out how you could drop so many things in your engine bay. I thought the chicken was the only reasonable explanation.:)

I learned on a long road trip that the wireless phone charger puts out so much heat my phone (samsung/android) gave me a message that it was shutting down all apps due to thermal overload and I needed to let it cool for 10 mins so it would work again. That's not a "feature" I wanted!
Just curious did you also have it plugged into usb to run android auto while it was sitting on the wireless charger pad? That could also cause the excessive heat issue. If you have android auto/Apple CarPlay running and you are resting the phone on the charger pad because it’s a convenient space, disable the wireless charging in the settings menu first.

Perhaps on AUS models but it does not get hot on mine. I have driven 8+ hrs straight several times with the phone in the wireless charging slot (and plugged in for carplay), my phone barely gets warm - just as with using a wireless charging pad at home or in my other vehicles.

I use both because the USB outlet has a low charge rate but I want to use Waze..

Edit - I guess it could be an Android issue.

It’s a phone problem as you’ve got 2 chargers trying to charge the 1 battery so it’s going to overheat, depends on the battery I guess but they’re not designed to be charged by 2 chargers at once. Even if it doesn’t overheat I doubt you’re doing anything good to the battery. I find my iPhone XS Max doesn’t get hit on a wireless charger in the car or at home but if it’s plugged in to usb charging and I’m using apps at the time it can get hot. Comes down to what you do with the phone at the time.

The phone is smart enough to charge from only one of the chargers.

And you have the rear heater set to full hot and you're not blasting the cool from the A/C? If so, we should find out if you have a newer model with better heat shielding or something...because that is not typical. The pad gets so hot, you would hesitate to touch it.

I've had it for a year now. Love the car. Deep cleaned the interior yesterday. Vacuumed up every last dog hair. Pulled off 14 more pieces of plastic protective cover - accelerator, brake pedal, hatch seal one side, rear seat release button, rear seat middle buckle, et. al. Someone must come in at night and put more of these on?

No, your car was like mine and received an incompetent dealer prep and inspection. Go look at how much you paid for that to receive not up-to-date software and the most simple items (protective plastic) left undone. Am I surprised any time I hear on here about a real issue that went unnoticed?

I haven't found anymore plastic in over eight months now. Crossing fingers. The last piece was under the hatch floor cover. I found a piece under the steering column ten days before that; I'd had my car almost fourteen months. :D

iPhone XS max here as well. Mine doesn't get hot.

You forgot to answer my question above. It's not the phone that gets hot, it's the pad that overheats the phone. The pad is hot because the independent rear-seat heater is on. If your charging pad does not get hot even when the rear heater is on full, then we need to know your build date so we can go bug KIA to tell us what they changed (heat shielding or better insulation) and figure-out if it can be retrofitted to 100% of the rest of the Stingers that all have this problem.

My pad does not get hot but I have never used the rear heater. I was responding to Coast GT above, there was no mention of the rear heater.

I assumed your comment about it was saying it only happens with the rear heater in use, which didn't apply.

So how about you try turning the heater on full and see if yours is the same as everyone else's? ;)

My phone would overheat (I have wireless charging off).
Killing the rear seat heat fixed the issue.

I discovered today that if some wanker in a 4WD is tailgating you flipping him off through the sunroof annoys them exponentially more than the traditional finger out the window. :)
Another discovery related to the open sunroof. I discovered today that washing the windscreen with an open sunroof doubles as a face wash, especially at speed.

So after just over 1.5 years of owning a Stinger I made a new discovery this afternoon. Have the car in drive and engage auto hold. Open the drivers door. Nothing happens, take the drivers seatbelt off and open drivers door (or open door then take off seatbelt) and the car automatically comes out of auto hold, disengages drive and engages park. Never noticed it before but I don’t use auto hold much

I had that on my S7 - it would go into nuclear meltdown mode. Galaxy S10, so far, has been amazing. Charges way faster, and stays cool.

GT2 I assume? With my GT1, I was able to put it in reverse, auto-hold, get out and look at my new LED backup lights. Stayed in R the whole time.
