Anyone else paint the engine cover?

I used Duplicolour Metal cast on the engine cover as they had a 2 cans for the price of one deal at Supercheapauto.com.au. It turned out ok if i say so myself, even did the oil cap, it was a bit boring before i thought, especially after seeing my brother's HSV cover matched his car.

I did the struts as well, they look great but were still wet/tacky.

What did you use for the base coat?

no basecoat.. just some painters tape, a cleaning with alcohol, and rustoleum engine paint. Probably 5 coats overall.

Looks like he masked the whole area and left the "Turbo" the original red. It would be tempting to paint it the same red, though.

Duplicolour Metal cast ground coat I think any silver or chrome paint would be fine, i read some have used gold as a base to give it a deeper red as the red being candy is transparent.

If the part is already silver as the struts were it looks great just using the red or whatever colour you choose.

Did this last night and very happy with the results! The support braces look especially good. Thanks for the tips.

I started to cut out the "turbo" letters to paint, as well, but my making tape wasn't holding strongly enough. Didn't want to risk overspray.

Well the colours themselves are transparent, so experiment with the yellow, red and orange. I'm sure experimenting on something silver you will find how many coats of each you need to get the colour you like, thin coat of the red then some yellows, perhaps the orange is perfect as it is with a few coats, hard to say, trial and error, good luck with it though if you
give it a go.

Great job.
The only other one I’ve seen was white
But the red is next level.

Looks good - but I'd love to see someone make a new engine cover that says something a little better than "TURBO".
Something like "Stinger GT 3.3L Twin Turbo" would be nice.

By the way - I used a label maker to make a nice sticker that says 7.3L oil capacity and stuck it on my aluminum engine/strut brace. Just so I never forget how much oil she takes.

Been real hot here and i discovered paint doesn't seem to dry so well in major heat, it is 47C (117F) at the moment and i struggled to put everything back together and finally fit the air intakes, hot (literally) tip for today is don't do car work in 47 degrees celcius I have an Xforce varex catback to install so hopefully the heat drops a tad in the next few days but at least the under bonnet is done.
