Anyone else paint the engine cover?

Thanks for the inspiration Typeface. Just painted mine with Duplicolour Metal cast and a clear coat on top. Ended up changing the Turbo to silver, and added TWIN painted in matching duplicolour red. Lettering in silver isn’t perfect, as I started out doing them in duplicolour red as well, but even though I did under coat i didn’t leave it long enough and when I pealed the tape around it I pealed the paint of some of the lettering. Oh well, silver it is. Matches better anyway with the silver lines.

I just ordered the BMS vanity covers and the duplicolor metal cast red Since BMS only offers black vanity covers. After watching numerous YouTube videos I ordered the adhesion promoter, base coat, metalcast red and the clear coat. I’m trying to match the the BMS anodized red struts and oil cap. Having seen this I may attempt to do the engine cover as well.

It looks like it’s been a while since y’all completed painting the cover. How is the paint holding up on the plastic cover? Flaking, cracking, chipped? Are you able to remove it without harming the paint? If I were to swap spark plugs would that effect the paint as I remove/replace the cover?

No issues at all, and that includes hot Queensland summer temperatures. 10 months since I did it and it still looks like I just painted it. Highly recommend that paint and undercoat - pretty impressive stuff.

Thanks for the quick reply. Are you able to remove/replace it without damaging the finish to swap spark plugs or other maintenance?

Here’s mine. I did it a few weeks ago. Will you update once you get the vanity covers painted and installed. I have a whole setup coming from BMS and was thinking about painting the vanity covers. Curious how it’ll turn out.

Yes of course. I think the covers will arrive next Monday or Tuesday and I’ll get to them later that week and post a few pics. At present I’m completing the aesthetics of the car before I get to the performance aspects. I’m waiting to see if MBRP is going to come out with a 22 version or if they’re going to ever admit they aren’t. I’ve emailed them more than a few times and there’s never a response. Starting to think they just don’t give a crap.

This was my first time using spray paint. So the base coat wasn’t perfect, but after spraying the metallic red it looked great I did have a mosquito land on the drivers side in one of the corners before o could get the cover on. They’re painted but I haven’t done the clear coat yet. I’ll do that tomorrow or the next day I also painted the black clips and heads of the screws to match. I just put them through the top of a box to keep them secure. Since the clips are plastic I sprayed them first with 3 coats of the plastic adhesive before the silver bottom coat.

once I get these complete and mounted, I’ll start thinking about doing the engine cover. I want to make sure I don’t “yellow” the vanity covers with the clear coat I’m using.

Ill throw a pic into the mix. My base coat on the cover was VHT silver for plastic. To get the color i was after it was multiple coats. Used the metal cast as well. Overall im pretty ok with the outcome.

For the strut bars did you wait for one side to dry before doing the other or did you do both side at once?

Why wouldn't you do both sides at once? It's not like your rad is gonna fall out

Had nowhere to go that Saturday yanked everything out and sprayed em all. Back in the same day

I wanted to show off for the thread. I had my engine cover painted and hydro-wrapped by a local custom shop (Hydrodypz in Woodstock, GA). The crossbars are stickerbombed and wrapped in red vinyl by me.

What did you use to paint the strut tower bars? Been thinking of painting/powder coating/wrapping/etc mine.
My strut braces and rims are powder coated. Of the three options you mentioned I highly recommend going with powder coating. It doesn’t cost that much and it’s much more durable. My strut braces cost me $90 and I got them back the same day.
