I thought this worthy of it's own thread...

The Kia Stinger models with the mid and upper audio systems (9 and 15 speakers) will be having this feature (Active Sound Design) as revealed in this thread's translated details; Stinger Pre-order offer price and features (Korea)

Additionally, there is pretty good portion of a "paper" I found specifically relating to ASD here;
"Development of Personalized Engine Sound System using Active Sound Design technology".
This is available to read via the side link on this webpage, and I found it really interesting, I would have liked to have read more of it... http://papers.sae.org/2015-01-2216/

Snipit from paper;
An important trend among vehicle NVH engineers is the production of attractive engine acceleration sound quality for the enhancement of a vehicle's image and performance. In addition, customers have increasing interest and enjoyment in customizing their cars to reflect their personal taste and preferences.The PESS (Personalized Engine Sound System) has been developed for making a unique and individually customizable vehicle concept. The system allows the customers an opportunity to create a variety of engine sounds in a single vehicle using active sound design technology.In this system, three different engine sound concepts are pre-defined, Dynamic, Sporty, and Extreme. Each of the engine sounds can then be adjusted with parameters that determine the timbre, such as main order, rumble, and high order. In addition, the pedal position during acceleration has also been used as a parameter to further personalize the experience. An application in the Audio-Video Navigation system (AVN) has been implemented that allows users to easily customize these functions.It is expected that the system will provide a new auditory experience as well as an enhancement to the marketability of a vehicle.

Now I'm not 100% sure if the Stinger will actually have PESS but it "sounds" promising that it will (...see what I did there ;)).
I am however fairly certain that the ASD tunes will be linked to the Stinger's drive modes.

Kia was first in Korea too? http://kia-buzz.com/kia-NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness)-technology/

Semi-random Youtube referencing this.. (in Japanese, sorry);

Some more relevant reading found here. This was published only weeks ago too.

Some key mentions I noted while reading:
  • ...powerful and pleasant acceleration sound for six cylinders....have been implemented through ASD.
  • ...sound quality of passenger car is an important factor for improving emotional quality and characterizing the sound identity which is related brand product and identity.
  • ...designed order level profiles for V6 type engine sound
A Systematic Approach to Engine Sound Design for Enhancing Sound Character by Active Sound Design
http://papers.sae.org/2017-01-1756/

Snipit;
This paper presents a systematic approach to interior engine sound design for enhancing sound character of car interior sound effectively. Nowadays an active noise control technology is widely used in vehicle industry. Particularly, an active sound design (ASD) technique using vehicle’s audio system for controlling interior sound due to powertrain has become a general method to improve sound quality or character. The ASD system using speakers has the advantage of creating various sounds relatively easy. In this study, the novel systematic approach is proposed to guide the efficient design of powerful and pleasant acceleration sound by order spectrum analysis. At first, primary attributes of powerful and pleasant sound were analyzed and sound concept was derived. Secondly, the optimal linearity and the level envelope of firing order were derived by subjective evaluation. Next, the engine orders arrangement was analyzed under the aspects of musical harmonic theory on six cylinders engine. The level ratio of harmonious orders for pleasant sound was also evaluated. And the novel powerful index based on booming and rumbling was developed and used for determining powerful sound target set-up. Finally, powerful and pleasant acceleration sound for six cylinders engine were suggested. These sounds have been implemented through the ASD.

Another goodie.
PS. these are all Hyundai/Kia related too btw...

A Research on Brand Sound Positioning and Implementing with Active Sound Design
http://papers.sae.org/2017-01-1754/

Snipit;
This paper aims to establish a systematic process of developing a brand driving sound. Firstly, principal factors of a brand sound identity are extracted from factor analysis of many sample cars. As a result, brand sound positioning map is drawn using jury test data. Also, the multiple regression analysis of subjective and objective test results is carried. As a result, the principal factors are expressed by objective test data and brand sound positioning map can be easily updated from the measurement data. In addition, what should be improved for designing a target sound is reviewed. Secondly, various technologies of target sound design are discussed to involve the brand identity and vehicle’s character in driving sound. Also, an efficient tool to implement the target sound with an active sound design (ASD) system in a vehicle is introduced. This tool enables to efficiently design, tune and simulate a target sound for ASD system in a laboratory. As a result, some sound examples synthesized by this tool are illustrated.

Even though I'd love an awesome exhaust sound, enhanced or not, it would shit me to tears if it overwhelmed the luxury, comfort, quiet ride. This asd science sounds like a good way to achieve both.

When I first read about this yesterday I had a flashback to attaching playing cards to my bicycle wheels with clothespins. :)

i hope for a GOOD sound system !!! Its part of a package and Kia will not let us down !!!

Good news: the ASD levels can be changed from default! This pic is in Korean but the following screen is labeled "Active Engine Sound" and gives 3 options, roughly translated as "weakened", "default" and "strengthening".

This is good news - some manufacturers (like BMW) don't allow you any customization.

Cheers for that.
I saw that video but my Korean is not up to scratch yet.
So I see my custom setting (you know ... for the full show-off mode ;)) will have the comfort ride, lowest suspension but with strengthened sound.
Nice.

So Active Engine Sound is independent of drive level (i.e. comfort, sport, eco)? So you can theoretically drive in Eco mode but have AES set to Strengthend :D. On my current car ride if I am in Sport mode, there's more faux sound pumped into the cabin, but that's the extent of controlling the sound.

Not exactly, it is part of the "Custom" drive mode where in addition to choosing whatever combo of Engine/Transmission, Steering & Suspension settings you want, you can also change this. I would guess it's preset for the canned modes... i.e. Sport uses the highest sound setting and Eco uses the weakest.

Screenshot is from this video where they roll through some of these screens.

Any thoughts on what the menu under custom is?

It's titled Mode Change. From what I can gather it has to do with what it displays on the screen when you change modes. I think the first option causes it to display that full-screen drive mode graphic with the car graphic like they have earlier in the video. The 2nd one sounds like it only displays a small notification at the top of the screen, and the last one turns it off altogether.

This is all rough translation, I'm using the Google camera translator and it's a bit janky... initially it translated the first option there as "Sex Show"... not sure I recall hearing about that option...! o_O

We'll see. I never like falsies.

I totally agree. For me, synthetic exhaust noise is the one of the biggest anti-features I've seen in a long time.
