i know most of us are psyched about the stinger and while Kia is climbing the reliability charts, I am concerned about reliability and longevity.

There are a lot of consumer reviews of engine problems and warranties not being honored, and not just older models.

So my question is, how many of you have owned a Kia before, for how long, and how many miles?Did you have any issues?

Thanks

I have a 2013 optima. Yes it is a model with engine issues. In fact I have an open recall on it right now. I have not heard any knocking yet, so I haven't taken it in. I do know of someone with the same car and the replaced his engine on the recall..
I just read an article yesterday where a bunch of sonata owners are suing Hyundai over the theta engine (2.0 and 2.4) because they are having problems Hyundai is not fixing.
I have not heard anyone complain about the 3.3 but there are WAY less of those in the wild so who knows..

I own a 2014 cadenza and have had no issues. Great car.

Aren't all brands have a bit of that?

Yeah, but it’s a lot of engines grenading or locking up, not a trunk rattle here and there.

I’ve never owned a Kia. We have Fords and Toyota’s and bought a new Mazda CX-9 this year. No real issues yet.

If I buy a stinger, I’ll be trading in a reliable Mustang GT. Just want to make an informed decision

2012 Optima Hybrid with 90k Miles. No issues at all...it’s been a great car. Also have a 2017 Sedona SXL with 10k on it. Both cars are rattle free. The panaromic sunroof on the hybrid does creak a bit in cold weather though, but that’s a known issue for a glass roof. Happy the stinger just has a sunroof.

Oh, I didn't mean to say every brand is unreliable, or otherwise.

I meant to say that no brands have 100% reliable records. Like, if you buy a Kia - it will never ever have issues. Thus, generally, Kia has been doing well in the reliable department, especially as of late. Still, that does not guarantee every Kia will be issue free, large or small. So, given the nature of the automotive industry, there's no reason to doubt the reliability records of Kia coming from a JD power and the like.

Warranties not being honored also happens here and there across multiple brands, the sample size matters obviously.

So, to answer your question straight up, the Stinger is my first Kia. I am a fan of Toyota, have had many models from them and reliability-wise very good. Had a '12 Focus and after about 3 years, issues (driveshaft, transmissions, rear suspension) started appearing, but still wouldn't call Ford an unreliable brand. It was only my car and the service people said, no real pattern can be drawn from other '12 Focus cars - so, it must have been the way I and my dad drove and care for the car, or just as simple as luck.

I guess, what I wanted to say was that you can take comfort in the reliability issues with Kia.

This is a very valid concern and I've seen it recently brought up at the Genesis Owners Group. If you're coming from a Mustang GT, I'm going to guess you'll be opting for the 3.3 liter twin turbo V6. There, you should be very safe. I'm confident that even the new 2.0Ts coming out are fine. But the 3.3T is an EXTREMELY important engine for the new Genesis Motors. They're not taking any chances with it...

We are at 4 now
2009 Cerato/Forte Koup, traded for 2017 Cerato/Forte Sport Hatch - wife’s car
2013 Sportage Platinum 2.4L, traded for 2018 Stinger GT - my car
All excellent, with no problems.

My first Kia is a 2014 Cerato. Never had any trouble with it. Picking up my Stinger in 2 days.

Car list for the household since I have been in the car business. The Kia's have been the 2 most reliable and worry free.

07 Hyundai Tib. 80k - no issues - owned for 2 years.
08 GMC Sierra Denali - 60k - Only issue was battery cable related. - owned 1 year.
13 Hyundai Sonata - New - put 16k on it and it was flawless.
14 GMC Sierra - New - Put 12k on it no issues minus tail lights and slight rear fan noise very faint.
15 GMC Sierra - New - Put 10k on it (obviously nothing major here)
14 Subaru WRX STI - traded this after 6 months. Was probably one of my favorites but was full stage 2 and I didnt want to blow something up.
16 GMC Sierra - New
This is where the Kia's come in.
16 Kia Sorento SXL 2.0T (GF's vehicle) - Loved it and is constantly mad at me for trading it in but we leased it and she put on way to many miles. That being said she is hard on vehicles and this thing walked through all of it. Hit a deer in it an hour and a half from home. Drove it the rest of the way home and she said it looked like there wasn't that much damage. Body shop estimate was $8900. ( Employee cost from my body shop).

16 Kia Optima SX Launch 2.0T ( My current daily) - This car is the reason I will forever own a Kia. It is possibly the best, most reliable, most comfortable, fun car that I have ever had. I bought it New and have put 12k on it so far with no issues.

16 GMC Yukon XL ( Traded the Sorento fo this) Loved the ride, loved the look, hated the electrical system. Hands down the worst electrical system that I have seen. Also the Pillar covers on the outside lost their adhesion and started flapping in the wind. I had to jump it in the morning because the security system would lock up and not allow me to start the vehicle. Needless to say this was the most expensive ride that I purchased and by far the least reliable. We bought it with 42k miles it was traded by 51k.

15 Toyota 4-Runner LTD. ( Her current vehicle) (She is not a fan) - It is missing so many things that Kia and even GM offer. This is to be expected as it is Toyotas (utilitarian) SUV. It is supposed to be more off road than luxury. I like it because its a tank and bullet proof. I dislike it because it rides like a ton of bricks the system is way way behind everyone else and the gas mileage is terrible. I know you don't buy big SUVs for gas mileage but it is worse than the massive Yukon XL we had as far as gas mileage.

Summary (wow that got long)

The 2 cars that I liked best that we have owned for the past 8 years. Both Kia. The ones I paid the least for with the most equipment - KIA. The ones that have cost me the least amount of grief and saved at-least one life - Kia. As you read this final portion you may be thinking well ya you're a Kia dealer. Kia is just one of the stores that I work with. We have 7 Brands within a mile of each other. Hope this long drug out message helps someone lolol!

The stinger is my first Kia...

Welcome aboard, @RockinRay! Thank you for signing up! Which Stinger did you get? What color? What car did your Stinger replace?

Just doing a double, triple, quadruple-take here. You bought a 2016 GMC Yukon XL - with 42,000 miles on it already? And have already since sold it? What were those 42,000 miles put on the vehicle in a single year? A few months? :alien:

Lol. Well technically the build date was in 15 as most of the models out there. But yes from when they purchased it and drove a lot of highway miles. We see it more often than people would think in the industry. I traded someone out of a 2015 Silverado with 122k on it last month. That my friend is a lot of miles lolol!

Okay. Well I'm just very surprised to hear the build quality of the GMC was so bad. I wonder if the Escalade is any better...

I'm not saying that they are all this way. I could have gotten unlucky as none of my trucks had this issue. The big kicker for most is that they do not purchase extended service contracts. The bumper to bumper warranty would have been expired for me as its only 3 yr 36k. I purchased an extended service contract on it for that reason. Its always hit or miss as we all know every vehicle has a mind of its own. The other kicker for me is the infotainment system. I was very impressed with GMs when it first came out in the new truck/suv bodystyles. After driving and getting used to Kia's system GMs seemed like it was lacking something. I know it seems like I'm anti GM on this post ( I'm not by any means) Currently posting from our Cadillac showroom :). I think it was just weird for me to see Kia do such big things in the technology department even in comparison to someone like GM.

I currently own a 2011 Kia Optima SX Turbo with 120000 km. Loved this car from the first day I bought it. Only minor issues and a real pleasure to drive for my daily commute. I still get compliments on it. Will be diffucult to part with when my Stinger GT Ltd arrives in a few weeks
