FAQ: Vibration under braking: warped rotors? NO!

Several things....

1) The Lexus IS was a sedan, not a coupe (with the exception of the IS C convertible)
2) The $65,000 ISF was a 400+hp direct competitor to the BMW M3, not a run of the mill IS. The F-sport package was an appearance package only. Only the "F" got the engine, brakes, suspension, etc. upgrades.
3) The "F" brakes and F-sport brakes are VASTLY different. If they were the same, they were the same in the same way that the base 2.0L Stinger brakes and the 3.3 Stinger GT brakes are the same. They aren't.
4) I listed the number of ISFs produced. It was 5118 total over 7 years. Stinger sales in the first 6 months surpassed ISF sales for all 7 years. The ISF is quite rare in the context of modern production cars.
5) When I owned the car, it had been on the market for 2 years. The Stinger has been on the market for about 1.5 years now. It seems like a great comparison to say that the Lexus ISF Brembos had multiple "official" pad choices at the 2 year mark.
6) I mentioned the "official" Centric part and praised it's likely quality. I am aware of this choice.
7) Picky yes, stubborn not so much. I will likely chose some Hawk Street 5.0 pads. I am not happy about it not being a listed for the Stinger, but once I have the pad in hand, I will verify its fitment on my own. They have high dust and the brake dust is corrosive due to the metallic particles, but they are awesome pads when you want to stop often and hard. I will just have to wash the wheels more frequently. The temperature range and progressive feel suits my driving style.
8) The "official" Centric Posi-Quiets are a great pad if you are looking for low dust. The are not a performance pad however. There are more suitable ceramics and way more suitable semi-metallics for the 4000+lb Brembo equipped Stinger.

9) My overall point is that if so many pads are compatible, then why doesn't ANYONE else list them as compatible. It is a simple question. The pads already exist, the rotors already exist, and the calipers already exist. There is no "waiting for the aftermarket." There should be no need to wait for them to "pop up." They are apparently already here and being used by Stinger owners and sold by Khartunerz. What exactly are we waiting on so that other vendors and manufacturers make it official and list them as optional pads for the Stinger?

Sorry, but you seem to be very impatient. In few months you are going to be hearing "I told you so" as there will be more choices. You don't seem to be considering that vendors respond when they see demand that will equal them profit. When this happens you will see more choices.

I thought you were referring to IS sedans with F package and I was including the RC coupe in that since it is basically the same car. I am putting Gyrodisc pads on my car soon even though the don't list them for this car because I have done enough research and cross referencing to know these are the pads for the caliper on our car. Sorry you are so skeptical (or cynical maybe) that you don't believe this or trust anyone else. Not everyone is out to screw everyone else or burn you.

This back and forth is all very interesting, and daunting.

I will wait a while. My brakes are good. Apparently I don't need higher performing brakes for the kind of driving I do. But I like the thought of having far more braking performance than what I typically call upon. "Dust" is off putting. But again, the way I drive I probably would end up saying, "Dust? What dust?" :D

If it ain't broke don't fix it!

AKEBONO ASP1001

Every part number I've research, matching back to the Centric Psi-Quiet 105.10010 matches with the 2016-2019 Caddy CTS Turbo with Brembo set-up. This includes the HAWK HB787U.582

In less than a month, my brakes will not be under warranty and the set of new rotors waiting for me at the dealership will "disappear." The work was authorized when I did the wire harness check/recall and I have been waiting ever since trying to find aftermarket pads. I am sorry that seems like I am being impatient to you, but I feel like I have been very patient waiting months for Kia to come up with a permanent solution to their crappy brake pads since it was first noticed months ago.

I am not entirely sure how a vendor will "see" demand if they never market a product. Is there some master Stinger brake pad list that I need to add my name to so that the demand increases? The faulty pad issue is well known to anyone who reads the major automotive publications and what better opportunity to market and sell a quality brake pad than when your only competition is a crappy stock pad?

If I see more pad choices in the next few months, I will take the smallest amount of partial credit. I have written many pad manufacturer's customer service agents and made them aware of the absence of, and need for, a brake pad for the Stinger GT equipped with Brembos. Now let's see how long it takes for them to figure things out.

I was referring to the ISF sedan, there is no "F" package, only an "F-Sport" package. The ISF was its own car much as the IS 250 and IS 350 were. The RC coupe is not basically the same car. Even the 2UR-GSE in the RCF, is vastly different than the engine with the same code in the ISF. The RC is a Frankenstein of two cars using the ISC midframe and GS front subframes. It shares more with the GS than it does the old IS platform.

I am not skeptical or cynical, yet you never miss an opportunity to apply a label to me. Thanks for that. As the dealer is installing my pads during the rotor swap out, I have already been informed that they will not install pads that aren't designed for the car. It really has very little to do with who I trust or believe. It is what I can prove or demonstrate when I get to the dealer and ask them to do the work. Many dealers I have been to will not install aftermarket parts, I talked this one into doing it after they turned my rotors without my authorization.

I am sure that not everyone is out to screw everyone else or burn me. In fact, Kia has been quite welcoming to resolve the issue with me. The only person that seems to want to grind an axe with me is you, not everyone.

New rotors without different pads are not going to resolve this issue. The problem will return.

1.I am aware that the f sport package on the IS sedans is not the same thing as an ISF. I stated that the RC is the coupe version of the IS sedan, not the ISF.

2. I am not labeling you. You obviously do not believe the research some have done here regarding pads available for this caliper, thus this car. You have stated many times that since they are not listed for the stinger so therefore in your opinion they are not usable on the stinger. That is where the skeptical/cynical comment came from. It is obvious to many of us that these calipers were not designed for this car, they are off the shelf Brembo calipers used in multiple applications, nor were the pads (except for OEM Kia) , they are used on several different makes and model of cars. I have worked in dealerships and most are not going to install aftermarket parts, especially on cars under warranty.

3. Finally, it should be obvious to you that the dealer putting on new rotors or resurfacing your existing rotors is not going to resolve the issue without changing to a different pad. The issue will probably return. I want the problem solved and as such I am going to try something different than what the dealer is willing to do.

If these aftermarket pads work and solve the problem you are the one missing out due to them not being listed for the Stinger (although Centric does list pads for this car). Suit yourself.

What is your response going to be when all these pads makers start listing pads for the Stinger and they are the same part number as listed for several other cars? We don't have the answer yet but I suspect this information will start coming out soon.

The RC is not the coupe version of the IS, it is an entirely different platform from the IS. The RC has nothing to do with the frame under the IS 250, IS350, and ISF. It only shares metal with the IS C convertible, used for its more rigid midsection attached to the front frame of the GS platform.

Most of my recent posts are in relation to a search for appropriate pads for my Stinger. I have stated that I have rotors available at the dealer and have held off on getting the work done until I get suitable aftermarket pads. Thank you for letting me know that new rotors without new pads won't fix the problem. I had forgotten since I typed it in one of the brake threads months ago.

That is great if you just want to add stuff to your car and hope it works because some people on a forum did the same thing and nothing broke yet. I have used parts not made for my cars, bikes, motorcycles, helicopters, etc. that were not made for them usually with disastrous results when I was younger and dumber. I don't do those things anymore. Can you understand that some car owners might want more substantial verification than a forum page with preliminary user reviews on it? I think of things like, "Who do I call if something does go wrong or the fitment is bad?" I can hear the conversation now, "(Them) I am sorry sir, we can't warranty that part even though it chewed up your rotor, we do not make a brake pad for the Stinger. Why were you using our pads on a Stinger? (Me) Oh, some guys said it was good... (Them) well... click...(dial tone)." Do things how you like, just don't belittle others because we don't do things like you do. Maybe we once did and learned our lessons the hard way.

I keep hearing how obvious it is to everyone that the rotors are common to this platform and that. Like I said before, it doesn't seem that obvious to every major retailer and pad manufacturer or else they would have listed the pads for the Stinger on their respective web pages. Why don't they? I am guessing you will ignore this question again just as you did every previous time I asked it. If everyone here but me knows these other pads work, then why don't the very people who do business in this line of work choose to list a pad for the Stinger? If it is so well known, do they feel they don't have to? I am beginning to wonder why they list any cars at all on their websites with all of the forums out there now (sarcasm).

I am willing to solve problems outside of the dealer as well, provided there are applicable parts for my car. However, when the dealer is footing the bill for the labor, offering new rotors, and installing the pads, I am doing my best to work with the dealer to the extent possible. As for the Centric pads, I am not looking for a poor performing low ball brake pad. If you want to use them on your 4000lb GT car, by all means do so, but I think those who do and drive aggressively may be disappointed. I suspect that when pad makers start listing parts for the Stinger, I will buy some better pads than whatever I have to put on now to get it done under warranty.

This sounds right - I drove the RC (RC350 and RC-F) at the Australian launch, back to back with an IS-F. They're *completely* different - the IS-F feels like it's struggling to keep the power in check (we drove them at a racetrack), the RC-F felt composed when travelling a LOT faster (and doing so under more significant duress in terms of cornering loads). The IS-F felt more exciting - the RC-F was almost boring in some ways by comparison - but I know which I'd rather have. :)

Sorry, you are not correct on the RC-
The Lexus RC (Japanese: レクサス・RC, Rekusasu RC) is a compact executive two-door coupé manufactured by Lexus, Toyota's luxury division. The RC which according to Lexus stands for "Radical Coupe" is a two-door coupé version of the Lexus IS (XE30).
It is a couple version of the IS sedan.

I am not ignoring you, you are refusing to realize that theses calipers and pad design are not unique to this car. You are also ignoring the fact that Centric lists this pad as being for the Stinger. Rotors are consumables just like pads, tires , batteries , etc.....

Are you still going to buy pads if they are they same part numbers I am talking about here and not unique to the Stinger?

You might want to educate yourself to proprietary vs. non-proprietary. The calipers on the front of this car are used on multiple applications.

I am done discussing this. It is your car and you have the freedom to do what you want.

@Helo58, it wasn't complicated to purchase a set of Centric Posi Quiet pads and then cross reference the part number to find orher pads identical in specs to the Centric pads....

He!!!, my dealer installed these Centric pads for me.

I've given you the part numbers. Use them.

RC 350 is a coupe version of the IS 350. I suspect the RC F and IS F are the same relation to the lower end cars as a BMW M3 is to a non M series 3.

Yes, this is 100% true. A plethora of matching parts across the body to prove it also.... Lol

This exchange has been hilarious.

You are wasting your time making this case, he obviously does not believe this because these companies have not taken the time to list this for this car yet. We are just a bunch of yahoo's spouting off opinions. Not being open minded for sure.

And you absolultely correct cross referencing these. Other brand pads will eventually be listed for this car and somebody will be eating crow.

Sorry not wrong on the RC. It is quite well known how the RC is actually constructed. The RC was not based on the 3rd gen XE30 platform. The RC was based partly on the XE20, specifically the GSE21 and the L10 platform. The ISF used the XE20 platform, specifically the USE20. platform. I made no argument for or against the XE30 because there is no ISF variant of the XE30. The CURRENT IS and RC are developments called New N, because it is based partly on "Old" N.

I am not refusing to realize that the calipers and pad design are not unique to the car. I fully acknowledge that they might be used on other models. I fully acknowledge that the pads might work if used. What I am saying is that I can't prove it and neither can you. Just because it fits, don't necessarily mean it will work as intended. Should I use just any spark plug in my car if it fits?

I love asking the question, so I will keep doing it. In 1.5 years, why haven't any major retailers or pad manufacturers listed the Stinger as a car they make pads for? I am not ignoring the Centric pad. I am saying that for 50 bucks, it probably sucks for use in the Stinger.

You keep saying that the calipers on the front of this car are used on multiple applications. How do you know this? Are you just repeating what someone else has said or has Brembo posted a list of cars that share these calipers?

I have never said that the calipers are proprietary so please stop repeating that over and over. I have acknowledged that they may be used on other cars. As I said before, I can't prove that and neither can you. I am not looking for anecdotal evidence, I am looking for a listing from the pad manufacturer.

I fully expect that eventually the pads listed for the Stinger will likely be the same part numbers as you and many others are using now. When I see those part numbers listed for the Stinger, I will buy them.

Mac, I get it. My hang-up is that I don't want to use the Centric pads. I am looking for a more aggressive ceramic or semi metallic pad. I understand that I can cross reference the pad numbers and that those cross referenced pads may work. I just need the manufacturer of the pad to say so before I buy it.

Only on the current XE30 platform. Not the XE20 the ISF was based on.

The first post you got right. Yes, I will believe them when they are listed. As far as my warranty is concerned, yes, you are spouting opinions until it is listed as an approved application. Not sure what the open minded reference means, probably another attempt to label or slur me. My burden of proof is just higher than yours. When they are listed for the Stinger, I will happily and confidently buy them. "Crow" doesn't matter to me, only you.

Sir, the pads either fit, or they don't.. Seriously, this is fact. All of these pads are exactly the same size in every manner: length, width, depth, etc. All that changes is the pad compound,

Based on the stock Stinger pad, it seems that there is more to it than fit. The stock Stinger pad fits, it is the wrong pad for this car.

@Helo58

all the pad manufactures dont list the same pads we do because they havent tested them in the stinger caliper or they havent gotten specs for the stinger pads to reference which pads will work

We are the only and first to specifically market pads for the stinger because we purchased and tested it ourselves
We guarantee all the pads we offer to fit perfectly without issue

Reason why we havent listed pads for the rear is they are proprietary and dont match up to anything currently out

Centric already posted part numbers for them but they wont be available till late in the year
