FAQ: Vibration under braking: warped rotors? NO!

I saw a post on another board claiming there is actually a TSB about this now. Anyone else heard this yet?

I was told Genesis put out a TSB to turn the rotors on cars sitting for a while on the lot before they deliver them, do you know what the TSB says, I'm scheduled next Saturday for my 1st oils change and this issue.

Sorry I don't. They need to fix this and I hoped maybe they had a new TSB with new brake pad numbers or something.

Did it feel like the warping was in the front? Just curious because I'm bringing my car in this Friday. Talked to the service manager at Dan O'Brien Kia in Norwood last week and he asked me to wait a week so that he could order rotors and pads. I told him it was the front. Sure feels like the front to me.

Don't really feel it in the steering wheel, more in the seat which points to the rear I was told

I think mine is the front but will find out this week. I was happy when the service manager said that refinishing the rotors is a waste of time and that he was going to change the rotors and pads. Brakes are definitely not a high point of this vehicle.

Just picked up a sportage ex for the wife Saturday, those brakes seem better ha ha

I thought mine were only the front, yet my dealer checked the rear too and find all of them to be uneven. They replaced all rotors.

They told me they would start with the back rotors and pads first.

It’s crazy KIA hasn’t come up with a solid fix for this issue seeing how long it’s been going on.

That's stupid. The front brakes do most of the stopping. Tell them that's stupid and replace everything at once. Why should you be inconvenienced? Actually, call the Stinger VIP line.

So I've been thru this several times now on my Stinger, and also on another vehicle, and am pretty sure what I'm sharing is accurate.

I have picked up minor vibration under moderate braking on multiple occasions. When I notice this, I make a point to brake heavily one or two times when I get the opportunity. Every time, this vibration has vanished. I make a point under "normal driving conditions" to glide to a stop as smoothly as possible, so the change in braking due to deposits on the rotors is really evident.

My conclusion is that pad deposits form due to heavy braking *followed by* having the pads in contact with the rotors while stationary, even for a minute while at a traffic light (for example.) They can be reduced or removed by simply following the "bedding procedure" provided by aftermarket manufacturers - or just brake hard now and then, when safe to do so.

You can also engage the e-brake when sitting at light after heavy braking.

Did I read somewhere that the emergency (e-brake) is a completely separate brake from the calipers and pushes on the discs from the inside, metal to metal? No pad deposits possible.

The e-brake ((P)) and auto hold use the regular brakes. May be biased towards rear only, but still involve pad-on-rotor contact.

The e-brake/parking brake uses the shoes at the rear rotors, inside the drum/hat. So there would be no deposits on the face of the rotor.

Well? How do we determine what is what? I need to pay more attention when someone says where they get their information; I don't remember, but Metalmania's description tallies with what I read on here months ago.
