How do you navigate?

I navigate by the stars....

I check for moss on trees and in the night the stars guide me

Android Auto.

I can't even orient NSEW when I arrive by NAV. I get there fine, but once there, I have to go exploring via Google Maps to find out where I am. Old School, I'd do a map plot ahead of time and arrive with full sensory input. Now that part of my brain doesn't engage while driving, following NAV ques and directions. It sucks. But the subsequent "aerial" (satellite) scope of the area supplies what the drive in did not.

Umm, Mike... if you plug your phone up you can use Android Auto or Apple Carplay on the car's screen for navigation. You don't have to balance or hold the phone or use the phone's screen.

I don't know about Carplay but Android Auto uses Google's assistant, so you can say or ask it to go pretty much anywhere and it will understand you and give you the quickest available route with construction zones, traffic jams, and nearby police shown on the car's screen.

You can also ask it to Google random things while you drive, play specific music, make calls, send texts, etc. just as it would if you were using it in the house.

Based on your post you should definitely try it out. I think you will be amazed.

Yes, I know about Android Auto. But I'm not going to haul out cables and plug my phone in everytime I get in the car or want to navigate somewhere. And on top of that I hate the interface - there's only about half the screen dedicated to actual navigation, with a big area taken up with information (as I recall). I tried it a few times and while it has its good points, for me the bad ones overshadow them.

The on-board nav is always on, doesn't require any special action to get it going, and it's nicely-integrated.

Now, if they ever make Android Auto wireless, I might rethink the whole thing.

I use both, depending on where I am. Local I'll throw it in my phone, long distance I'll use the car navigation for the HUD, and many other great features it has

I'll admit (don't tell Kamauxx ) that I sometimes just use the Maps app on my Note 8 to navigate when I need to find something quick. Sometimes the built-in nav is a little slow.

I used to feel the same way with my Optima. Now I have a 3" cord that can be hidden away. I hated the inconvenience of having to plug it up but then I realized it only takes a few seconds.

The entire screen is dedicated to it, BTW.

Next generations of cars will hopefully have AA wirelessly. It's available for the aftermarket but unfortunately there's no way to integrate it into already existing OEM units.

They "say" AT&T doesn't really limit your data, but instead they just throttle you down when you reach the upper limit under your plan.

Also, can you stream music from your phone or listen to iHeart Radio while using AA? Haven't tried that.

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking. But Waze on Android has an integration with Spotify. I have a 128GB phone and store all my music locally on the phone with Spotify at highest quality settings. And Waze has a setting where you can have it's directions come through the phone speaker even when bluetooth-connected to the car. So you can do whatever you want with the head unit and still have Waze giving directions, warnings, etc.

But when traveling I often listen to music stored on my phone - or sometimes iHeart Radio - through the car's head unit via Bluetooth.

I was wondering if I could use Android Auto for navigation (using the head unit screen), while at the same time streaming music from my phone or iHeart radio (through the phone). I assume the phone can handle both tasks at the same time, but I just haven't tried it.

I'm assuming that's Google maps? It's customizable (along with Waze).

For comparison my Google maps looks like this.



The strip is still at the bottom, but *meh*. I don't need that extra 1/2" to make it a worthy alternative.

Okay, I figured out how to collapse that dialog box, although getting it back when I want it is sketchy. I like having the miles remaining and estimated arrival time, but I just don't like the way AA displays it. And I can never find where to cancel a route or turn AA off.

It 's just not intuitive for me. I like using Google Maps on my phone, but the AA implementation is puzzling to me.

By the way, I think I'm jealous that your display looks sharper and more detailed that mine.

Lol. No, I switched to satellite and mine looked less sharp at the same magnification level. Maybe GT2's get better screens.
