Satellite Navigation Map Updates

Kia Aust has told me that the dealers should have the latest updated maps by end of Jan 18. I just got the latest tom tom updates and they have a lot of the new expressways still missing. I think Kia's Maps will be way behind the other nav maps.

Thanks sticks. How do we then update?

Or it'll update through the USB port.

I have seen that you can get map updates in oversea countries by downloading from KIA but in Australia it will be by a new sd card from the dealer. We are behind the times you know

I wonder if over the air updates will be available as a standard soon. I imagine they probably will. Nobody would need to bother the dealers anymore the download could happen in the background and only install when the car will obviously not be turned off...

Some mfrs do over-the-air updates on their electronics, but I'm not sure about Nav updates. They like to charge for those. I would think they'd be on some kind of media that you'd have to pay for.

... of course, when you're finished, you pass it on to someone else who can use it, perhaps. LOL

It does seem like something they can get away with as a chargeable item - these updates... I imagine when over the air navigation updates are available, they'll be subscription based...

I feel like in vehicle maps suck. Why wait for something that needs to be updated? With Android Auto and CarPlay you can actually use maps that are constantly updated. That's a big part of my reason for wanting them. I'll be damn if I pay for one update lol.

It's true, the maps on our phones are updated constantly. They're better these days...

Yep. My wife's Durango maps are ok for the most part but Google maps is always better plus has better traffic information. They sent me an email and said they want me to pay a couple hundred to update the maps. Won't happen when I can get better info for free. Now if the Stinger is going to get free updates, I'll definitely get them. Never know when it'll come in handy.

I prefer Google Maps for longer drives since it has better lane guidance and stuff. Waze is good for shorter drives with more detours.

On the other hand, I like how the in-car navigation shows directions on the HUD.

That's a good point too. I didn't think about the HUD.

Really? You can't get Android Auto or Apple Car Play navigation maps to display on the head up display interface? I'm going to guess it's the same way for all manufacturers at this time - but that's kind of poopy... :poop:
Nope, it's just the phone using the car's screen as a second display so it doesn't have the ability to hook into different cars' HUD systems.

Ahh, I see... That makes sense. It'll really be something once you can get the phone to work with the HUD screen as well...
