I agree these look cool but will this actually help with your performance at all. Kinda seems a bit gimmicky to me, or something to do for aesthetic purposes

The ducts are purpose designed ram inlets, meant to scavenge pressure from the front of the car, they are not intended to be solely cold air intakes, although cool air is 'nice to have', high pressure air is even nicer as it is beneficial for the turbocharger looking to target boost or load and could use a higher inlet pressure as a reduction in vacuum work
 
^ Forgive ignorance, Does it connect to the stock airbox on the other side? Or what you're saying is that this may direct more air to the airbox. Effective with something like K&N setup?

Yes to both. With the stock air box and this installed the air would enter the big mouth and travel directly into the air box below the filter and flow up through the filter and into the turbo. Essentially it extends the closed intake system to the front of the car.

On the K&N Intake the air blows across the filter and allows it to draw cooler air.
