Kia! Why not manual on stinger?!!!

Porsche gets it. So does Hyundai, Mazda, Nissan and on and on. True sports cars offer manual transmissions. Way more fun to drive. Nice car and would definitely be interested if it had a 7 speed manual transmission.

Well, the most comparable Porsche model would be the Panamera, which actually isn't sold with a manual transmission in the US. Actually the first generation only had manual in Europe but the 2017-current model doesn't have a manual anywhere, does it? The take rate is just so low it's not worthwhile for sporty family sedans. Lots of internet talk about how manual fans say companies should make manuals, but real world new car sales don't match up with internet talk unfortunately. I guess a lot of those people just buy manuals in their sports cars and have daily drivers with autos, or they just buy used cars with manuals.

True sports cars offer manual transmissions.

The Stinger isn’t a Sports Car, but thanks for digging up a 6 month old thread to tell us that other companies offer manuals.

Yes, another chance to repeat that the Stinger is a gran turismo: which is all about driving long distances in complete comfort. How is pushing a clutch going to augment that experience?

As the transmission is quite good they figured the auto can handle gear changes better than a manual. Dont expect to see a manual soon.

Not too many car manufacturers worldwide are offering manuals anymore....reasons:
1. Most people don’t want them PIA in most cities traffic congestion.
2. Autos now give good fuel efficiency & assists with meeting a lot of countries strict fuel emission regulations.
3. Reliability has vastly improved with little or no maintenance required.
4. Autos trade better these days.
I don’t know. Still can get all big US muscle cars with manuals. Porsche offers most of their models with manual option - heck Porsche had to release GT3 with manual due to complaints they only offered dual clutch initially. BMW, Audi, VW, all offer manuals. Mazda has many manual options, Honda , Toyota too.

Given G70 is built on same platform with same 2.0 turbo and offers a 6 speed doesn’t seem like a stretch that they could offer an enthusiast model with 6spd.

....bit about Italian Term “Gran Turismo” ......never has lack of manually shifting been criteria and in fact in Italy some Gran Turismo are race cars. Also many of cars that inspired Stinger design were manuals. Being involved in control of the car is part of the true Gran Turismo ethos . Plenty of GTs today that have manuals. So would say offering a smooth shifting relaxed 6 speed would be very much part of GT. It ain’t a luxury car which some confuse Stinger for

Yes, I figured I'd get called (pedantically :p) on my assertion. In the modern world, the "gran turismo" has been "redefined". Manual transmissions are not part of the comfort and luxury package, except for hardcore drivers, which probably make up less than one percent of those interested in a gran turismo experience. So although the original cars were manuals, so were most cars "back then" if they were supposed to be high performance machines. Not so anymore.

Have you driven Stinger? I’m a long time Porsche guy. 356s, 914/6, 911, Boxster S, Cayman S. Raced 914s , boxster and Caymans. Hate to say it but I find 8 speed auto in the Stinger to be well suited to the car. And frankly more exciting to drive than my old manual Cayman S. Of course now my Street going Cayman is a race car and a little more exciting but now I wish it had a PDK.

I don’t know that you need to be hard core to be an enthusiast who enjoys a well engineered manual gearbox in a GT car. Let’s be honest Kia doesn’t have a manual worthy of a GT. Plenty of current day GTs with manuals today driven by people who aren’t hard core but appreciate driver involvement with their cars.

Lol. You are saying "not 'hardcore'" and then describing hardcore. Anyone these days who wants to be more involved than with an automatic transmission (with manual gate and paddle shifters no less) is "hardcore". Imho, of course. :D

Yeah given that there's a generation coming up who gravitate toward ridesharing and if they do actually drive themselves will rely increasingly on nanny features like lane assist and blind spot detection, I'd say anyone still left who would actually prefer to sit in traffic in a daily driver with a manual can be considered a hardcore enthusiast.

We have 3 vehicles. Hyundai Veloster turbo. 6 speed manual. Subaru WRX. 6 speed manual. Stinger GT2. So 2 of 3 are manual. Manual transmissions are a blast to drive!

When you get old you appreciate having an auto and not having to change gears all the time.

There used to be an argument that manuals were faster than automatics, that automatics were slow and ponderous. With advent of dual clutch and fast shifting 8 and 10 speed transmissions with sport tuning, throttle blips, etc almost all advantages of manual have gone away. Great example is with my two Porsche’s with same 3.4 liter motor - one with 6 speed other with 7 speed dual clutch trans and paddle shifters. Dual clutch is way faster than my manual car. Car in auto mode down shifts as I brake into corners, rev matches, rarely does it shift where I wouldn’t . Cars are equally fun to me. And in traffic well auto wins hands down.

While I think Stinger Auto is a great transmission it doesn’t come close to positive intuitive shifting of Porsche transmission but then Kia has huge torque and it can be a little lazier . But in Porsche I feel like trans reads my mind and is very transparent to driving experience while in Kia I know it’s an automatic and I’m always thinking hmm should have shifted there.

How old is old? I’m 54 and still drive the manual and it’s fun.

Old is whenever your knees hurt often enough that you don't want to futz with a heavy clutch. After a life of wakeboard and snowboard jumps I hit old around age 37.

That’s true, it does depend on factors as to how you treated your body through the years. I agree with that. Not all clutches are treated equally. My Veloster is light. The WRX, now that’s a heavy one!! Lol
