X Force Varex Cat Back System

Car is in the shop getting the Varex system put on. It would have been completed except that MY20 Stinger has changed the fusebox slightly and the supplied fuse tap doesn't fit, so the installer is having to sort that out. Be aware of that minor detail if you're ordering one and on a tight schedule.

Note the size of the fuse has changed. The cost of heated steering wheel?

Further update.

Once the disconnected power to the boot (ie. trunk) was solved (didn't have working lights back there - geez what else isn't plugged in), installer has still encountered further compatibility issues. He's been talking to X-Force about this. I'm not sure yet whether the incompatibility is between the smart box and the car's OBD2 port (because it's a new MY20 model) or between the smart box and the exhaust system itself (which would seem odd since it's all from X-Force). They are express shipping a replacement unit to see if that's the problem, otherwise it works fine in manual mode with the remotes, and we'll sort out the smart box controller at a later date.

I'll find out more when I pick it up this afternoon and update.

What are you thoughts on the Varex?

When I get it I'll let you know. But on paper it fits the bill for what I wanted. The price is cheaper than the Kia one, it has better control for the modes and it is easier to install (at least it will be once they sort out the teething issues with MY20). And in videos the sound can change between almost stock (but slightly nicer) to decently sporty sounding. It doesn't sound like a race car, which is good for me.

I've delayed pickup until tomorrow because the new part didn't arrive in time.

New smart box arrived late yesterday, all installed and working perfectly now he says. Picking up this afternoon. Vroom vroom!

Poor guy has put in a lot more hours than he bargained for but is really dedicated to getting a good result. Can't wait to get it back.

Ok, I obviously need to get some recordings of it at some stage. Installer reckons lots more low down torque compared to before. I guess that's possible with 2.5" all the way instead of 2" and various squished oval bits, but it's a bonus rather than a goal. Having only had the car for a week now (and of that 4 days in the shop) that is hard to judge, but certainly in sport mode with the valves open it is really reactive - almost too reactive to drive in traffic. Anyway, that's anecdotal, not scientific. He might have just been selling it a bit.

The smart box has an app to control it, with manual control, or 4 adjustable presets with variable openings controlled by rpm, throttle and speed. Quite a bit of experimentation required there. What would really be nice is if it worked through Android Auto so you could control all that through the touchscreen.

There is some resonance with the valves open at freeway speed (~90-100) if you are not on the throttle, and I also wouldn't use eco throttle mode with the valves open either, as it changes up early to a high gear and becomes quite boomy. But that's not the point right? Sounds very nice higher in the rev range as you're powering on. I think I'll play with the mappings so it closes at lower throttle or rpm (need to experiment which works best) and opens up when you get on it.

There is even a bit of lift off burble which is pretty cool. We probably should have had the stereo off so I could analyse it a bit more, but my son was in charge of the audio (we are still playing with the nice sound system too).

I didn't drive much with valves closed. It's definitely got a deeper note and slightly louder than stock system in closed mode. I'll drive tonight with it closed and take note if normal around-town-eco-mode driving is suitably quiet for the wife. If not... oops - I guess she can drive the Mazda 2.

Anyway, this is just a bit of a stream of consciousness brain dump of my first impressions from the first drive on the way home.

Hi crg,

Any longer term thoughts on the Varex? Has the sound changed/mellowed with age. Reliability? Liveability? Are you still happy with it? Did you find a good auto setting for the smart box?

This is on my short list.

Thanks

I don't think it's changed much. 95% of our driving is in the city so we usually avoid the drone resonance point in that scenario. I've just taken delivery of some replacement tips to see if it fixes this problem - probably going into the shop to get them installed next week I'd say. I want to do a before and after recording and post an update here.

But in general I don't regret getting it - stock exhaust is just too quiet and in sport mode with the Varex it sounds unreal. I've pretty much abandoned the app - without Android Auto/Apple Car Play integration there isn't much point and it's just a bit of a gimmick. It's easier to just use the remote.

Hey Crg, let me know what replacement tips you end up going with and if it helped - had the X-Force exhaust since September last year and would like to try and remove some of the highway/low-end drone - as driving around in primarily Sport only gets kinda costly in fuel!

Hardly ever bother turning off the exhaust though - I can't even be bothered with the remote - really screams towards 5000 rpm and love it.

Thanks Crg.

I have a before recording that I made on the way to the exhaust shop (needs editing down). I haven't made an after recording yet. Initial impressions are that it's noticeably quieter overall. It still has the nice tone when open, but it's much less aggressive. I don't know about the drone yet as I've only been tootling around the suburbs. It's arguably more in character with being a GT car. Not sure I like it better - will wait and see if it's fixed the resonance and that will be the trade off. If not, it's an easily reversible mod.

I’m have just purchased the xforce/varex system.... can anyone shed any light on the performance gains?

Do you hav a link to the tips you fitted?

Imo the performance gains are significant. With intake an exhaust I had about 50hp gain at the wheels. Here is my car on the Dyno, at mode 0-2 using the jb4.

Sorry I have another query... the car back is easy to install... however I need some guidance in how the wiring loom has been connected to accessory power source through the car? Cheers!

I ran my under the battery and then under the back seat to the cigarette lighter. Mine didn't come with a fuse tap.

Yes mine only has the cigarette lighter adapter on the end... but stingers don’t have cigarette lighters..

Hi there

I had my Varex installed now for about a month and just recently purchased the smart box so i can control it with Bluetooth, does anyone know the best / easiest way to run the wiring from the exhaust up to the OBD2 port?

Also i have some drone like most people have commented, can someone share the link to alternative exhaust tips that people have used to improve the drone?

Hi GT SS Adam is the dealer principal of Peter Warren Kia, not sure he'd be promoting aftermarket exhuasts I could be wrong
Thanks @Lui, I have since found that out after my original post, he was/is still a member here.
I know PWK, fit aftermarket weeks & lowering springs as for exhaust maybe just cat backs but not 100% sure.
