Whirring noise when slowing down - anyone had this?

We've got a 2019 Stinger GT model with 55,000km on the clock now that we purchased second hand 2 months ago, and just a few days ago we noticed a "whirring/whining" noise when we're slowing down (such as when turning into a parking space etc.). Took it to the dealer and took him for a drive, and of course, Murphy's Law, the noise wasn't present. So thought I'd see if anyone else had experienced a similar noise and if there was anything we could try to replicate the noise a little more consistently? Or of course, if you had it fixed, what was the problem so we can pass that information on.

Thanks in advance.

How many times have you heard it?

Any common characteristics? Only when engine is cold, or only at a certain speed?

Never heard of or read about a whirring noise

It's just started, the few times we've heard it has been when we've been slowing down (such as to turn into a parking space). It's not every time we hear it, but occasionally. Just started doing it this week. And not when the engine is cold, but after we've driven somewhere and then turned in to park. Turning the wheel around and going around round abouts doesn't bring up the noise, so assuming it's not power steering related.

I seen in an older thread that other's had heard it as well but had seen no outcome or if they found the source of the noise (plus it was a thread from last year).

So, when decelerating while going straight?

The frequency decrease with the speed decrease?

Is it possibly from the stereo?
Is it from the front or rear?

It's been both while going straight and turning - but always decelerating that we've heard so far.

Stereo has been turned off while we've been listening to pin-point when it's happening. And sounds like it's coming from the rear - my step son heard it clearly from the left-hand side rear passengers seat.

Just found a few things while googling that it may happen more often in sport mode, so we'll try that out this afternoon when we go out again to see if that's the case. Just trying to figure out a few more things to test out to see if we can pin-point it a little better for the mechanic.

Well, certainly share what you find.

Very curious.

I've read on here (rarely, and quite a while ago) of a LSD making a noise and it was replaced

Normally not while decelerating in a straight line.

That would be unusual

do you have slotted brake rotors ? or aftermarket brakes ?

Take the baseball cards out of the wheel spokes…

Check the trans and diff fluids

I would change the diff fluid and see if it changes. Differentials can whine under deceleration if the pinion bearing is starting to wear out. It could very well be corrected (or minimized) with a fluid change if the car still has stock fluids.

Update:
Kia investigated this pretty heavily - first was having a machine sent out for them to record the noise, and then the next was to do some pressure testing on the transmission. Apparently this sent back some, 'something's not quite right' readings, so they are proceeding with sending over a brand new transmission to replace in the car.

Hopefully this fixes the issue!

All the fluids in everything were checked and all fine as well to answer the above questions - and she's going in again shortly for a service.

I will say the noise was getting worse - we could hear the noise while increasing speed as well as decreasing, and it's starting to fluctuate (for lack of a better word) as well which was concerning. Will throw another update after the new transmission to confirm if the noise has vanished.

Further Update:
Was not the transmission - transmission was replaced, and sadly we literally drove it not even 10 seconds out of the service center and it was making the noise...

They waited for another of the same model to come in for a service so they could compare that Stinger to ours in regards to 'does it make a similar noise' and I'm assuming a few tests here and there between them both. They came back to say the other Stinger was quiet as a mice and they think it may actually be the drive shaft making the noise. Little disappointed we had to wait nearly 2 months for them to say, "oh we compared it and it's not a 'common noise' that model of Stinger makes...

Will update when/if it gets replaced - but in short, the 'whirring noise' saga continues.

My Stinger also makes a "whirring" noise when coming to a stop, that I thought was just regular for the mechanical parts on the car (transmission, turbos, LSD). 2022 Scorpion at 15k miles.

Mine is making a whining noise in the rear but only in sport mode. Car only has 200 miles on it! Is it normal to whine only in sport mode at low speeds?

  1. Pay attention to the circumstances: Try to note any specific conditions under which the noise occurs more frequently. For example, does it happen only when the engine is cold or after extended driving? Does it happen when the vehicle is in a particular gear or at specific speeds?
  2. Experiment with different maneuvers: While driving, try various maneuvers that typically trigger the noise, such as turning into a parking space, making tight turns, or decelerating while applying the brakes. By trying different scenarios, you may be able to determine if there's a specific pattern to the noise.
  3. Ask for a road test with a technician: When visiting the dealer, request a road test with a technician, if possible. This way, you can demonstrate the noise firsthand and increase the chances of it being diagnosed correctly.
If you find it difficult to replicate the noise consistently, you might consider documenting the details of each occurrence, such as the date, time, driving conditions, and any other relevant information. This documentation can be helpful when working with the dealer or seeking assistance from an independent mechanic.

It's worth mentioning that without personally inspecting the vehicle, it's difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of the noise. However, some potential sources of whirring or whining noises during deceleration could include issues with the differential, wheel bearings, or transmission. If the noise persists or becomes more noticeable, I would recommend returning to the dealer or seeking the assistance of a qualified mechanic who can perform a more thorough inspection and diagnosis.
