Interesting read. I’m 55 and have never seen petrol attendants in Australia ever, even as a child. It’s always been DIY here since forever.
In the US (and other countries too), many solutions are created to problems that don't exist.

Again, 96% of America does not require gas station attendants. And the requirement is governed by the individual States, not the "US".

Please learn about governance if you don't want to keep getting corrected. Did you pay attention in civics class in high school?

i'm guessing the states that still do this are a holdover from the 1950's when gas stations were full-service and checked your oil, wiper blades, put air in your tires, etc while they pumped your gss ... ?

If I recall back in the 80's in Virginia, you could choose full service lanes or self service lanes. The full service lanes did exactly what you mentioned. I believe some time in the 90's I think they went all self service.

Yes, the CNN article I referenced briefly covers the history and that is roughly the story behind these antiquated laws.

Bfglitch, I remember the self and full service lanes here in NY as well. I think the last 'full service' station I used was in a smaller town/city in Upstate NY about a decade ago. I haven't seen/encountered any since.

there was actually a full service lane at a local Exxon station near me - havent been there for like 5-6 years. gas was a few cents more than the self serve lanes. i accidently pulled into the full service lane once, not even realizing that was still a thing LOL. gas station is still there, but not sure if they still have full service or not.

Same thing in Canada. I was a kid when we moved there in '79. Most gas stations were half full serve, half self-serve, with the full-serve being like 3-5 cents more per liter (started at 19 cents per liter IIRC, but quickly went up). I doubt there are any full-serve stations left in Canada. Again, probably a holdover from an earlier time.

Not sure when auto-cutoff pumps were introduced, but IIRC, way back, you could easily overfill a tank and spill gas everywhere, and presumably the full-serve attendants were trained how to judge that better, AND were wearing overalls so that they didn't mind a small spill.

Imagine going in your Sunday best and spilling even 50-100 ml of gasoline all over them?

Unfortunately, the only part of "full serve" that still exists in NJ is the filling the tank part, and not even then all the time. They'll open the gas cap (sometimes not even hanging the cap from the holder), stick the nozzle in the tank, start it at the fastest speed, then walk away to do the next car. Later, usually well after the pump stops, pull out the nozzle close the cap, and hand you a receipt. Unless you're paying cash, they won't even bother to try to round up to the nearest dollar, even if the pump stops above $x.90. So no, there isn't even an attempt to check the oil or clean the windshield.

Ahhhh ! thats too cute .................Cowboy is missing Merlin !! Bawaaaaaaa

Merlin was last seen cooperating with UHP on a “street takeover” case in Provo.
I doubt it's anything that meaningful to society.

Because common folk is stupid and don't know how to pump their own gas, while truck drivers are professionals.

I'm still in awe this "law" hasn't been voted to be reversed/repealed decades ago. Another example of folks believing the gov knows best....? One would expect prices to decline too as there's no longer a need for multiple (if this was ever the case) attendants.

Been pumping my own gas since 16. It's not rocket science.
Yup. If ya can bend over to pick up a penny ya should be capable of pumping gas. Mind you u-tube has some beauty’s that can’t seem to grasp the concept.

1976 self service petrol introduced into Australia . Apparently Britain's first was 1961 but only got going in the period 1973 to 1979.

Co-op gas (Alberta) still has full serve pumps.

Usually there are two self serve and the remainder are full.

The one in Henderson NV (large Vegas suburb) is this size. The time I was there (not my vehicle) there was a line of 6 cars waiting at each set of pumps. It was a random Thursday afternoon. Popular gas.

I use a local Smiths (Kroger) gas and add Techron every 5-6,000 miles. From what I could find, Kroger uses Sunoco here in Vegas. For a while I was only using Mobile/Exxon but their prices were significantly higher and I get $0.03-0.30 off a gallon with the market purchases.
And this is why I don’t go even if I have a membership.. Maverick is 3.99 for 91, i will take it

In WA I just paid $3.39 with the $1 off per gallon at Fred Meyer. You have to shop there but their prices are pretty competitive anyway.
