What's your favorite Mando setting! Post it!

Perhaps it’s bad form to resurrect a thread that’s been hibernating this long, but since I just installed a Mando ECS10, the information here has been very helpful. I plan to implement, test, and adjust one or two of the custom setups detailed here to fit my needs, but a few comments/questions come to mind:

1. Is there consensus on the suspension differences over the years and how this might affect the custom setup numbers? I’ve heard rumors toward rear spring rates and rear anti-roll bar stiffness updates…though this thread makes me wonder if the changes are solely to the software settings.

2. Though it may not apply in this specific application, ride vs handling usually takes the damper shaft speed into consideration. Ride comfort typically softens compression for very quick upward wheel movements to absorb and isolate impacts from the chassis while handling stiffens compression for slow upward wheel movements to resist pitch and roll. Perhaps these two settings provide control into how much impacts are softened and pitch/roll is resisted? Rebound is another matter altogether. See 1-way (adjusts compression and rebound together, perhaps just one, perhaps non-linearly), 2-way (adjusts compression and rebound separately, ignoring shaft speed), and 4-way (adjusts compression and rebound and high/low shaft speed for each separately) adjustable dampers.

3. I’m at day 2 with this tool (and month 2 with the car), so I’m the least educated person here on its capabilities, mechanism, or intent. But I do have decades of suspension tuning on my personal track cars and spirited mountain runs and have a decent basic understanding of the impact and interplay between tire pressures, damper stiffnesses, anti-roll stiffness, wheel alignment variables, spring rates (absolute and relative), and a few suspension types. …though electronic control systems and MacPherson struts are completely new to me. How can they decide to make front camber NOT adjustable??? That’s half the handling control just thrown into the bin right there!

4. The basic ECS10 Sports setting is evidently superior to the stock Stinger Sports setting, at least to my backside, even just puttering around country roads. But there is still much room for improvement, especially in the rear, and I’m hoping for goodness from the settings shared here.

5. Goofing around with 10/10 front and rear on otherwise stock suspension results in a slightly softer ride than my previous tuned daily driver that saw many mountain roads and some track days. Of course, the Stinger weighs 50% more, which softens the ride considerably.

This is going to be fun!

Has anyone with the Mando unit noticed a change in the latest update in what it allows you to do? After my latest iOS update, 13.x, not on 14 yet, I decided to change a couple of the custom setting. A couple days later I noticed when I went into the App it looked different, I reset one custom setting and figured I would try it at the default handling setting, which looked like 40/60 (F/R). Overall it was pretty good. I then tried to adjust it over a speed range and noticed that it isn't allowing me to do a different setting front to rear. For example, I tried to do 30 front and 40 rear, saved it, but after checking it, it lists 30/30. Now the ride setting wasn't changed then when I went to adjust it, it is also doing the same thing. I typically vary between 2-6 points between front and rear. I check the other custom settings and those are what they were prior to the software update.

I will say that the ride quality is pretty firm and balanced at highway speed, well it is firm at all speeds but up to 80 which is set at 40/40 on the ride and 35/35 on the handling side, overall it feels sporty. I didn't switch it to Sport mode as it already feels like it is in a sport setting already. Has anyone noticed any change with how the App works or recently changed your setting and can tell if this is also happening in your software. Let us know. Thanks.
@Waynerm002, did you ever figure out why the front and rear advanced settings, when set differently, get saved as the front value? I’m seeing this, too.

Firmware version = 3.00
App version = 1.08
iOS version = 14.8.1

Thoughts? Thanks!

I do not see this with the Android version.

Front and rear settings for both ride and handling (advanced) save independently, when set differently.

Firmware version = 1.0
App version = 1.13
Android version = 11

I did not however, if I recall I think I used a setting like that on the car ad it was fine. I had 4 or 5 custom settings (forgot how many they were) saved and went between them. I wished I had kept the app to answer your question but I traded the stinger back in March so this is from what I remember. Sorry.

What are you driving these days?
Im on a Facebook group down here and the amount of folk parting out there Stingers is quite amazing. Im coming up to 4 years and this beast ain't going anywhere for 10 years. Its simply the best car ive ever had.

Back in May i got a 5.0 Gt mustang for the wife ,since then she prefers the Stinger. Of course before that she wouldn't touch it < insert eye roll >. Lol.

LOL! Was it a badge snob sort of thing why she would touch it? My buddies wife saw this awesome Maserati that she loved and wanted to check out, from the description, we said, it's probably the KIA Stinger, she swore up and down it wasn't. Then I got mine and she liked it but was turned off by the KIA badge. We coaxed her into driving it and she was sold, now she has one.

Truth be told, I thought I would be keeping mine for a long time as well. The plan was to trade the Optima hybrid for another hybrid or PHEV, we got a better offer on trading the Stinger for the Audi Etron, so we did that. Ended up with a pretty sweet deal on the e-tron, which means I'm now fully in the EV camp. My dream for a Sport Hybrid Stinger is now supplanted for an EV version. After seeing the Audi e-tron GT, I know KIA can put something together to meet that goal but for now, the EV6 will be their top performing model, when it gets released in 2023.

My Optima hybrid will have been with us for 5 years come the end of December and that car has held up quite well. I thought the Stinger would be the last car I got before getting a Korean EV, well I got part of that correct. It was the last car before an EV but it wasn't a Korean EV.

Nice to see you're happy going down the E road. Its yet to take off here, our Prime Minister went to the Glasgow summit and is bad boy number one because of his in-action in regards to emissions etc. Needless to say he's come back with his tail between his legs and promised X amount of million of $ to build a huge amount of electric charging stations. So far i can't say ive ever seen one.

As far the wife is concerned with her new found lurv of the Stinger is that orginally she was put off with the amount of bells and whistles it had. Now she's done a few 400 km trips in it and won't touch the primitive ' stang. I think the auto boot (trunk) opening sealed it along with HUD.

Good to hear your wife has been "Stung"

I'm shocked at those who get new vehicles every 3 years or so.
My 2005 Rav4 feels like new, I guess testimonial to Toyota quality.

Yeah, I'm always shocked to see a new Stinger partout / selling of parts due to sale of car on FB almost daily. I've never kept a car less than 4 years, and those were just my first two, because they were used / broken. Kept my '05 Legacy GT for 14 years - again, until something broke and I didn't want to fix it - I was tired of it at that point.

Just got started with HPDE and love it. Not sure an EV would work well for that. There are some Teslas that show up, but I'm so anti-Tesla due to the CEO at this point, I can't imagine buying one in the near future.

Liking Elon or not, Tesla has paved the way for getting EVs to become more mainstream by also building out a charging infrastructure to support them.Where they are still failing is in their build quality, which really is a lack of quality control to make sure the vehicles leave the factory in as close to perfect as they can get. They seem to work like a software company and push things out and patch the issues later. This is one of the main reason I passed on Tesla. There are a lot of EVs out in the world already but not many here in the US but, they are coming.

KIA should be releasing a few more EVs to add to their line up and if I remember, they plan to have 9 (or 9 more, I forgot) EVs out by 2025. They have the Soul and Niro EV, soon to come is the EV6 and EV6 GT, with a 3.5 0-60 time. Battery tech is getting better, Lucid released their Air with over 500 miles of range, I'm sure others will be targeting that as well. The EV6 LR version was tested and got @350 miles, it was stated that it would get 300 miles but they got some improvements on the system before the car even went on sale.

As far as for me changing up cars, I've been pretty lucky to get some great deals while test driving cars. You know how some times they bring over the sales manager to talk before you leave and they start spouting some crazy numbers, the "today only" price, you say no, start walking away, then they throw down some ridiculous number and you call them on it. Yeah, that kind of deal. Then you have them work that into a lease, oh they get a little upset at times and try to steal your trade but I used to sell cars and am checking the trade in on my cars. I love cars but can't own all of them, this is my way of getting in and out of them for a newer model. My 1st Stinger is the only car I had to replace due to a wreck and I got another. It has been one of my favorite cars to drive and own.

You seem like the type who might enjoy reading this. This describes (in great detail) how the car worked before you added the Mando ECS10. It now works the same, but you have additional control.

For good measure - although not specifically suspension related - you may enjoy this as well

Yes, I've heard about the Tesla build quality issues from so many sources..

Damn - I hear stories of people getting great deals on cars, but I've literally NEVER had someone make me a "good" offer on car, and I'm not great at haggling. I guess I have sucker written all over my face or something..

I went to test-drive a Mazda 6 wagon (IIRC) back in '05, when they were selling for thousands off MSRP. I asked the guy what their best deal was, and he pointed to the MSRP. I just got up and left. I did feel lucky to get like $1k below invoice on my '05 LGT wagon - I had asked about the sedan, and they were more willing to deal on that price, but honored it for the wagon in the end.

Yeah, right place, right time I guess. The last 2 hybrids (2014 and 2017) I was checking to see if they were in yet and I guess they wanted to move them. On the 2014, I went with the first one they had but didn't take delivery as it was 9 pm and the car would need to be brought back, I set it up for a Saturday pickup and when I went back, I test drove it and didn't like the interior color (beige, thought I could live with it based on the deal). They tried everything ti get me to take it and started lowering the price again but now had to talk to GM for approval. I went walking the lot and came across one with a darker interior and told them I would take that one. It was mislabeled (early arrival, awaiting new window sticker), had options that weren't on the label, they gave it to me and the price was even lower.

2017 was a test drive as well, I loved it, wanted to wait until I could check the incentives, the deal erased the upside down from the 2014 (was making the deal in 2016) and lower payment even more. They wanted me to take it that day so they had the salesman drive it home behind (was driving the Volvo that day) me and took the 2014 back. If the deal wasn't going to erase the negative equity, I would not have done it.

I had a Legacy wagon, also 2005. I wanted the GT but as my commute was 100 mile, round trip, so I went with the more fuel efficient version. It was still fun though. 5 speed manual, traded the wheels/tires for the GT ones, the handling improved with more grip, then later upgraded the tires to grippier rubber. That was a really fun ride. That lower center of gravity sure did its thing, one of the best handling car I had. Wished it had more power but it did perform quite well as it. Kudos to you for keeping yours that long.

I sure wish we could see what numbers the comfort and sport mode have programmed in for a starting point to a custom setting.
Probably way too late to help you, but in case others are interested, according to this video (and my cursory understanding) it looks like the Mando Sport setting is 80% front and rear. Am I reading this right? Mine definitely doesn’t feel that stiff.

Can anyone explain the difference between the basic and advanced tab? Meaning, if I’ve defined ride and handling curves (stiffness vs speed) for the front and rear suspension in advanced, what do the (completely different) settings in basic do?

Thanks.

No.

That's my video, and no it doesn't say anything about sport mode.

Sport mode changes dynamically as you drive. But I wasn't able to record that. Sport mode isn't a fixed value

The sole purpose of that video is to show the different current values to the actuators at different firmness settings.

It was really just a video for me, and I decided to share. It's not very informative to others.

You can not set both modes. It's either basic or advanced (per preset). Whichever you apply last is the saved one (either basic or advanced, not both)

Loads and loads of learning by trying and testing is about the only way.

Guess I misunderstood.

It looks like at 49 seconds you show the Sport readings as 0.674 (I goofed when I said it’s ~80% stiffness.). No?

So, if 80% is 0.56 and 50% is 0.94, then would 0.67 be ~70%? (Calculated in my head at 2 am - forgive me.)

I’m assuming a linear slope, of course.
